To be appalled by Ocado delivery charge

£6.99 ! regardless of when you order. Just tried to book an order for a month's time.

You used to be able to sometimes get a £0 charge if you didn't mind having an unpopular slot. Even during lockdown.

I've been a customer for almost 20 years - time to move elsewhere. Maybe Waitrose? What are they like?

Also loss is quite ambiguous, if I spend £100 instead of £80 to get free delivery is it truly a loss.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/08/2020 09:40

I'm a new customer. Only smart pass available is the £9.99 in my area now. One off deliveries were 6.99 irrespective of spend above a certain amount.

UntamedWisteria · 01/08/2020 09:41

jesstan2 that's how it used to work. My order is usually between £100 - £120, once every 2 weeks. Now it's a flat fee of £6.99.

Interesting that some posters are still able to get the low cost delivery charges, so I guess it depends on your area.

For those ranting about my 'expectations' they are based on 20 years of customer loyalty.

I've never signed up fro a delivery pass before as it seemed too expensive for a delivery every 2 weeks, but I'll look into it again. I would have thought their marketing people could have told me this.

And yes, "appalled'' was probably overstating it - a bit of hyperbole to make a point.

I do think what is effectively a 7% premium for home delivery is expensive, especially when Ocado prices are already higher than most of their competitors.

Just checked Smart Passes - £9.99 a month. Not worth it for 2 deliveries a month.

You could:

  • get a delivery from elsewhere
  • buy a smartpass
  • go to the supermarket yourself
  • find someone locally and pay them to go to the supermarket for you (I bet that would cost more than 6.99 though).
GarlicSoup · 01/08/2020 09:51

@Lockheart

Appalled? Really?

£7 for someone to do your shopping for you and then drive it to your house?

Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Ocado is generally expensive - food items that is

I’ll not switch though, and have the smart pass

Ocado will know that they're not the cheap option, hence most of their customers won't be price sensitive, or else they wouldn't be shopping there in the first place.

So they can set a more realistic delivery charge for what it costs them and know that most people will pay it because they value what Ocado offers (service, range, neighbours knowing that you can afford to shop at the posh supermarket).

I don't think it is all that expensive and use Ocado very often, more than any other. I too have a smart pass.

Tonight I am having my first ever delivery from Asda! Just for a change and it was recommended to me. No charge for delivery. I've also used Sainsbury's, Tesco, Iceland and the Co-op. Ocado is what I am used to though, I like their stuff.

TheGreatWave · 01/08/2020 10:07

I've just checked. I can get it free if I wish to wake up at 5.30am tomorrow morning. Then slots from 99p to 6.99 depending on slot.

GladAllOver · 01/08/2020 10:07

Just last week I signed up with Ocado as a change from Asda, just to see what their fresh food was like. I'm in their delivery area and neighbours use them.
They told me they were too busy and couldn't take me on as a customer.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 01/08/2020 10:08

I still don’t know why they are accepting new customers when they still won’t allow deliveries to some existing customers despite them paying for delivery passes.

MarshaBradyo · 01/08/2020 10:08

Jess We use it loads, more than normal shopping these days. But if I do go to Sainsbury’s I find it cheaper. It’s also dependent on what you buy though

jessstan2 · 01/08/2020 10:12

You say from 99p so there is bound to be something in the middle that's affordable surely? They also deliver to quite late at night.

You don't have to use Ocado though, there are plenty of others. I just think they are pretty good.

Nanasueathome · 01/08/2020 10:12

My Ocado smart pass is £3.99 a month and covers anytime
I’ve been an Ocado customer for a long time

They've allowed me, an existing customer for a few years. I had a delivery from them last week.
wowfudge · 01/08/2020 10:13

@UntamedWisteria

Just checked Smart Passes - £9.99 a month. Not worth it for 2 deliveries a month.
You'd rather pay £13.98 instead?

Ocado's delivery charges come down if you spend £70 or more. We had a free smart pass for a while, but haven't bought one as I sometimes order from Morrisons instead until I get pissed off by the lack of choice in some things.

I pre-booked for a few weeks earlier this week and got lower delivery charges. It's yield management, just like flights being more expensive when there's higher demand/fewer seats left.

policeandthieves · 01/08/2020 10:14

I've a smart pass for £1.99 a month - not sure how I got that but 50p a delivery is fine.

wowfudge · 01/08/2020 10:15

Wait until they move to M&S - there are bound to be offers, vouchers and free passes to tempt customers who are loyal to them for the Waitrose goods.

jessstan2 · 01/08/2020 10:16

I don't pay £9.99 a month. Are you sure?

Anyway there are cheap and some free delivery slots. I would be happy to pay about £3.99 for a delivery but never have with Ocado.

I don't get the controversy because there are plenty of supermarkets that deliver, not just Ocado. I use others sometimes, depends what I want.

supadupapupascupa · 01/08/2020 10:18

This week I paid £24.99 for my 6 month mid week pass. So they are still available

Habbyhadno · 01/08/2020 10:19

I cancelled Ocado. I've been using them for around 10 years but their prices have crept up and up lately (I'm guessing to get people ready to pay a lot for M&S when that arrives). Also their delivery pass pricing has no reasoning to it and is unfair. I was paying £4.99 a month and two of my friends were paying £2.99 a month and another friend £6.99, why the discrepancy? I also got told if I restarted smart pass I'd have to pay £10.99 - not sure how they work the payment amounts out.

Wolfff · 01/08/2020 10:19

I moved from Ocado over a year ago and although I miss some of the vegan items, I am very happy with Waitrose. No charge (min delivery £60) and very helpful delivery drivers. I also use Morrison’s occasionally - also very good.
