Still no beauty treatments! (Latest Boris update)

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 31/07/2020 16:48

My beautician just called me. I was booked in (rescheduled the 3rd time since June), but now due to the latest government update, we cannot do my session! FGS! 😡 it is just cancelled! - and I feel sorry for them too! They spent a fortune to get the salon ready for opening tomorrow and now they were told they still cannot do facials. 😔
I know this lot keeps making extremely short notice decisions - like they are just not thinking!

www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-53349989

I wish there was a feminine woman in that blooming government so we could get beauticians back. (We had golf, football, formula one, barbers ... reinstated weeks ago!)
Or should I just go to the barber and get my monobrow separated? 🤔🤔
AIBU to be royally pissed off? 😔

I am so so sick of people writing things off and trivial or non-essential. These are people's livelihoods, probably already teetering on the brink and now extra money has been spent and they still can't open.

OrigamiOwl · 31/07/2020 18:13

@Clearyweary

God this pisses me off. We are still in the middle of a global pandemic. Eyebrows and facials are not bloody essential Angry
No one is saying it is an essential, but it is important to some people. But taking the "essential only" train of thought... The coast was absolutely heaving today, as so many people wanted a day out. Not an essential, close down the carparks, toilets, cafes ect. Clothes shops are open...not an essential, shut them down to. Delis, toy shops, sweet shops...not essential either. Pubs, not essential. Closed.

If you only want essential things open you'll find it's only supermarkets and chemists like it was a few months ago. Be careful what you wish for.

Beauticians are important for some. I imagine they are very very important to the actual beauticians, who keep asking the date they can start earning again bring pushed back.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/07/2020 18:16

It’s not only about eyebrows. What about women who have PCOS and need an electrologist to treat their unwanted facial hair. Don’t dismiss this industry as worthless. It’s a big female driven industry and it’s as important as anyone else’s profession.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 31/07/2020 18:21

It isn't equivalent when barbers can do shaves/beard trims

No, it is not.

Again, the primary business for barbers is cutting hair. The barbers where I am are forbidden from doing anything that requires the client to remove their mask. If Hairdressers routinely provided facial and eyebrow treatments as well as cutting hair, and they were being closed while barbers were permitted to stay open, then there would be a legitimate question about sexism.

You are not comparing like for like.

kissmysass · 31/07/2020 18:21

You're allowed to be gutted about it. Regardless of anything else surrounding the issue or the logistical reasons for reopening I understand what it's like to have low self esteem when you look in the mirror and see your messy eyebrows.
I am in no way suggesting an eyebrow wax is essential for me or anyone else but my parents are Italian, my hair is dark, thick and grows so fast. They're so chunky now and its not a case of "doing it myself" or "taking some tweezers to it" like PPs are suggesting.
I feel a lot more confident and less like a mess with my eyebrows done. It makes me feel a lot less ugly, probably as I used to get bullied at school because of them.
Chances are these people saying do it yourself have thin or easily tamed eyebrows. I'd end up with uneven arches and uneven thickness if I did it myself. If it was so easy for everyone to do it themselves beauticians wouldn't bother offering it.
2 more weeks (hopefully no longer) to wait. Hoping these small businesses make it through okay to be honest.

Tennis82 · 31/07/2020 18:23

For goodness sake just get the stuff and do your eyebrows yourself. This makes you sound like a spoiled brat. There is a global pandemic, people are dying and having their lives devastated and you're worry about your eyebrows?

You would be the first to complain if you went and had your "beauty" treatments and caught covid-19. You'd say the government didn't do enough to protect you. Do you really want to risk contracting the disease and potentially leaving your family and friends devastated and broken whilst you lie dying alone in your hospital bed?

I hope you are doing nothing non-essential. Not leaving the house except for essential food shopping, no trips out, no ordering anything online that isn't vital for life. Because otherwise you are being massively hypocritical.

netflixismysidehustle · 31/07/2020 18:27

I think it's unfair for people to put different areas of the economy against each other. Self employed beauticians are important, weren't entitled to furlough and not unreasonable to be upset that they can't return to work.

Johnson wants people spending money and back at work and if people use beauticians rather than diy then that is up to them and they shouldn't be made to feel guilty

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 31/07/2020 18:33

@netflixismysidehustle - hear, hear! Well said! 👍

What's been evident is that largely male activities are prioritised over those with an even gender split or female ones.

Pubs should be the first thing to be closed with any additional restrictions, but these are more frequented by men.

PhilSwagielka · 31/07/2020 18:41

Because Priti Patel is such a giant man.

PhilSwagielka · 31/07/2020 18:41

(I do agree with the sentiment though - if hairdressers can work, so can beauticians)

Tennis82 · 31/07/2020 18:43

Not that it's any of your business but as a matter of fact I'm not. I was seriously ill in early March and since then have been shielding. All of my shopping is ordered online. My physiotherapist comes to my house to do treatments in full PPE and all of my prescription medication is posted to me. I don't see how you can compare having beauty treatments to ordering my shopping online.

I'm not the one whinging about not being able to have my eyebrows done! Yes the beauty industry has been hit hard but what about everyone else? Everyone has to earn a living. There have been so many temporary jobs created. As long as they weren't shielding they could have found temporary employment elsewhere if money was that tight.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 31/07/2020 18:43

I can see where some PPs are coming from with regard to me being ‘vain’ or even a ‘spoilt brat’, however it is important to me.

Pubs, takeaways, especially McDonald’s, Weatherspoon...? I am less keen on, as I am not a patron of them. But I have no objection of them being open. Slightly puzzled about how they help with the obesity crisis, but I am open to be educated.
While beauticians can help with low self-esteem ☺️

@PhilSwagielka - I have a couple of friends who work with her. Feminine is not the first 10 things that springs into their mind. (Or even first 100!) 😂😂

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/07/2020 18:49

FFS, The Beauty industry is huge. Eyebrows are a teeny percentage of the services offered.

Let’s not get hung up on one service.

This is costing people, predominantly women their income.

PhilSwagielka · 31/07/2020 18:50

Can you not do your own eyebrows?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 31/07/2020 18:54

If it's true that men can have their beards groomed by a third party but women cannot have facial treatments done ... then that needs to be addressed as it's a stupid anomoly.

U2HasTheEdge · 31/07/2020 18:57

Well, I agree with the OP and I for one would not be the first to complain that the Gov didnt do enough to protect me if I caught CV.

I can't do my own eyebrows as I am crap at it and I have bald patches from under-active thyroid. I always fuck it up.

PhilSwagielka · 31/07/2020 19:01

In fairness, even if you don't think beauty treatments are essential, beauticians have been losing money because of the lockdown. Their livelihood is at stake.

And I say this as someone who takes next to no interest in my looks, other than tweezing the shit out of my eyebrows so I don't end up looking like a female Roberto Martinez.

Sidge · 31/07/2020 19:04

I am so pissed off, I was really looking forward to my lash and brow appointment next week. Nothing to do with being a diva, just something I like having done. I’ll just have to wait a couple more weeks; I’ve waited 4 months I’m sure I can wait two more weeks...

What REALLY pisses me off is the illogical nature of what’s banned and what isn’t. There’s no sense to the decision making - so I can sit in a pub, maskless, for six hours with strangers at the next table but I can’t visit my beautician who is wearing a mask, same as me, and be in and out within 45 minutes.

I can spend hours in Primark, or Tesco, or the gym, but I can’t have a one on one appointment in a controlled environment.

It makes no sense.

deathswiftlyfollows · 31/07/2020 19:08

I'm a barber
Barbers aren't allowed to do beards or shaves
However many many are breaking the rules making it double hard for those like myself who are following the rules.

AuntieMarys · 31/07/2020 19:09

Smears are going ahead...I had one 2 weeks ago.
I had a facial booked for next week...bugger

CynsterBitch · 31/07/2020 19:17

I’m gutted about the latest cancelling too, my eyebrows are shocking and I’ve started twiddling my moustache, not a great look.
I completely understand that steps need to be taken to avoid the rise in numbers we’re currently having, but maybe if the government had spent the necessary resources developing their track and trace app we would have a better idea of the situations where people are getting infected.
Then those can be restricted rather than than banning 1on1 services Where contamination is so easily contained. My beautician has always been extremely hygienic, long before COVID was a thing.

Anyway I’ve rebooked for two weeks from now, and booked in for a mani/pedi tomorrow. I need a treat, and she basically had an empty appointment book for tomorrow.
