To think my portion was too large (photo)?

I’m living a bit ‘on the road’ at the moment (essential) and relying on eating out - trying to be as healthy as I can as I’m trying (!) to lose weight.

I have attached a photo of tonight’s evening meal, my only meal of the day plus a few snacks. My photo isn’t the best unfortunately but it was a bowl of spicy rice and a bowl of bean stew/soup (I’m vegetarian).

Aibu to think I had too much? Would you have eaten all of it? Unfortunately through years of dieting and binge eating I have lost sight of what a normal portion of food is and how ‘normal’ people eat.

Ps i appreciate it doesn’t look very nice but it was actually quite tasty!

I'm vegan so well used to eating beans and rice, and I eat large portions. If that was all I was eating all day I could probably eat that but it does look a lot of food and I'd definitely feel completely stuffed afterwards. Normally, I'd have half of each bowl together as a meal, or all the stew but no rice, but if also have another similar sized meal that day, so it's what is eat in a day but I'd rather not eat it all in one sitting as it would make me feel a bit sick.

MadameMeursault · 29/07/2020 21:41

It looks like quite a lot of rice. I’d normally do 75g uncooked rice per person (or is it from a pack, haven’t RTFT sorry!) It does look tasty though 😋

Candyflosscookie · 29/07/2020 21:45

@britnay I stand by my conviction. Maybe that's why I'm a size 6/8?

Have a round of fucking applause, titchy tits. 👏 Hmm👏Hmm👏Hmm

The stew in a cereal bowl looks perfectly fine OP. If it's your only meal of the day, have your rice, I would probably have 2/3rds of that myself but only because I do bloat on that kind of carb. If your snacks are pretty healthy, you will be fine.

MN is absolutely notorious for competitive eating and fat phobia. Don't let the obsessed savage skinnies send you off course.

SupremeDreamz · 29/07/2020 21:47

He can eat 3 chips in one sitting when he’s feeling hungry.

LTB.

AldiAisleofCrap · 29/07/2020 21:51

That’s clearly not rice though?

thehumanformerlyknownasfemale · 29/07/2020 21:58

Lettuce leaf? That's plain greedy and expensive.

Half a leaf of homegrown cabbage. Anything over and bought is just wrong.

You're not actually eating that half a cabbage leaf are you? Pure gluttony.

I just have a little sniff of a quarter leaf, every other day, and can barely get the zip up on my size 6 jeans as it is. I shudder to think the size I'd be if I actually consumed it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/07/2020 21:59

If it's barley it will be better for you than rice - more fibre. Very, very filling though.

Cotswoldmama · 29/07/2020 22:00

I think that portions fine. My evening meal is always huge but healthy where as all through the day I eat less but it's usually not so healthy. They say you should have the breakfast of a king etc etc but I e always done the opposite and always been slim. I can't face breakfast at breakfast time so I eat something at 10ish. Then lunch and a big healthy meal similar to Ops for tea. I think it's important to monitor portion sizes of unhealthy food but why not fill up on the healthy stuff!

fallfallfall · 29/07/2020 22:03

a serving size of cooked rice is 3/4 of a cup and a bit under 200 calories. unless tons of oil and salty flavorings it's a healthy grain.
soupy stews are fine. travelling/sitting long periods isn't great for the metabolism and neither is snacking.

Babs709 · 29/07/2020 22:03

If it helps - I usually have half of one of those microwave sachets which are 250g with a main meal. So 125g cooked rice? I’d say I have a healthy appetite (god know what that really means). But am a three meal a day person.

I’m with other posters in that you shouldn’t overthink it! Stop when you are full, don’t starve yourself.

JellyFishSquish · 29/07/2020 22:09

Ditch the rice. Too carby (yet so so yummy). Otherwise you are good. Mostly water.

Dugheed · 29/07/2020 22:09

Needs a nan bread 🤣

LauraPink · 29/07/2020 22:11

Your bean stew portion is absolutely fine! However that rice isn’t in a bowl it’s on a plate and it’s piled like a mountain......so too big

As an only meal per day possibly ok with the rice mountain but depends on what your snacks are I mean a kitcat and bag of crisps v carrot sticks have very different calories

As you say your looking to lose weight portion size is very important

QueenCT · 29/07/2020 22:15

It's her entire meal for the day! I'm amazed anyone can say that's too much
Even taking say 500 cals for snacks, I doubt that comes to 1000 cals

bibbitybobbitycats · 29/07/2020 22:16

Have a round of fucking applause, titchy tits.

This made me choke on my pie and chips!

WowOoo · 29/07/2020 22:17

Haven't read tall of the thread.
I'd probably eat all of the dish on the right and a quarter of the dish on the left.
I'd rather have a colourful salad on the side and just a bit of whatever is on the right. It would make me want to fall asleep at 6:00pm basically. Which is good sometimes!

neveradullmoment99 · 29/07/2020 22:19

If you are dieting, it looks way too much especially the rice. Try bulgar wheat. Much less calorific, tasty and high in protein.

WowOoo · 29/07/2020 22:19

Just a bit of the grain on the LEFT sorry. I ate a load of rejected couscous last week and did in fact fall asleep on sofa.

neveradullmoment99 · 29/07/2020 22:20

Actually, what kind of rice is it? I doesn't look like rice in the picture.

Ribrabrob · 29/07/2020 22:22

Very interesting, lots of different opinions! General consensus is that there was too much rice. Guess I agree really - shame as I love carbs!

Also perhaps I didn’t make it clear but it was actually from a restaurant - buffet type place, except they dish it up for you.

Thanks for all the opinions.

Honestly, OP, that looks like a huge two plates of food. I have 14 large adult family members who join us for Christmas Day and I wouldn’t serve that many calories between them all. In fact, I would expect that much rice to last me all year, and I run a Chinese restaurant that serves free rice with every meal to hundreds of customers every week. I simply cannot envisage how anyone could eat that massive amount of food in a lifetime. I want to vomit.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/07/2020 22:23

I agree with pps. It's not rice. Looks like pearl barley or similar.

Babs709 · 29/07/2020 22:24

@DollyDoneMore 😂

madcatladyforever · 29/07/2020 22:27

Yes much too large, Ive had to reassess portion sizes drastically post gastric band and I've tried various size bowls to see how I can stay full on three meals a day and after extensive trials this is the size bowl I use for all of my meals in order to stay the same weight.
Of course it does depend on how much you exercise and so on.
I'd say a quarter of that rice potion and half the stew max.

@madcatladyforever that dresser in the background is gorgeous. Sorry off topic.
