Cat biting my little girl

Mammaaof · 29/07/2020 13:01

I went out into our garden this morning and my little girl followed me out (enclosed garden no way she can get out) she started playing in her sand pit so I went back into the kitchen and left the door open, I was back and fore to the garden and back inside just pottering around. When I heard a scream, I ran out and my little girl was holding her hand saying the cat bite her, I asked her where the cat was and it was sitting on our garden chair but it was tucked under the table so I didn't see it when I was in the garden.
Now this car is known to be nasty, always hisses and shows its teeth at any neighbors who shoos it out of their gardens. This cat is constantly coming into our garden and sitting on our furniture.
Now I'm assuming my little girl has gone and tried to stroke the cat so not trying to make out she didn't do anything.
But aibu if I went and told the neighbour what had happened? Just to add we don't get along with these neighbours, neither does anyone in the street
Sorry for long post thank you x

@Fluffycloudland77 what is that supposed to mean?

That neither of you is a nice person.

cosmo30 · 30/07/2020 13:15

Having read it all so don't know if this has been suggested already but can't you just cat proof the garden? Hope it was a joke about taking the cat far away too

PhilSwagielka · 30/07/2020 13:25

Squirt the bastard. If some nasty enemy cat came into my garden and got aggressive - especially if it was threatening my own cat - that's what I'd do.

crosstalk · 30/07/2020 13:33

OP be almost as careful of your pup as you are of DD, with the cat. Most dogs come off worse when facing a cat unless the Lord forbid they are in packs or trained to kill.

A small friendly pup approaching this cat wouldn't stand a chance.

PhilSwagielka · 30/07/2020 13:38

While cats are less likely to kill you than dogs, they can still hurt people quite badly. My cat is a traumatised cat and he's terrified of small children because he was abused by them in the past. He had to go to a childless home because his last owner had a baby, and once the baby became a toddler, he just freaked. I think it's a trigger for him. Touch wood, he's not been bad recently but when I first got him, he would often go for me unprovoked. Like, I'd be walking around a room and bang, he'd scratch my foot, and it hurt like hell. One time I reached out to put something on my bedside table while I was in bed and he just leapt up and clawed the shit out of me, and I didn't even know he was there until it was too late. My arm looked like I'd self-harmed. I was this close to sending him back to the cat home because I was so frightened.

He's adorable!

And yes, LOUD NOISES. My cat hates it when I hoover or play my tuba. He thinks the tuba is some kind of evil monster from Hell.

TheGoogleMum · 30/07/2020 13:57

The neighbour doesn't sound like a responsible pet owner. I disagree with the odd comment about treating cat bites the same as dog bites becuase dogs can cause so much more harm than a car ever could. There's also an expectation of the owner to train that behaviour out of dogs while cats aren't very trainable. A responsible cat owner in this situation should consider making it an indoor cat or preventing it from leaving their garden at least and yes encourage you to shoo it away with water pistols if needed. I have 2 cats and one used to give us mini warning nips if fussed too long, the other has given a proper bite once when cornered and we were trying to catch her to take her to vets and her behaviour was warning us not to persue So our fault really. They are indoor 95% of the time and when they go out they dont leave our garden. If I ever heard they bit a child they'd be indoor 100% of the time!

ViciousJackdaw · 30/07/2020 14:00

All this pearl clutching! For goodness sake, just teach your DD not to touch animals that don't belong to her. Problem solved.

vanillandhoney · 30/07/2020 14:06

Oh my goodness OP, that puppy is adorable!

No cat will make an unprovoked attack on anyone

Oh yes they do. Semi-feral ones especially - since they are full of wild instincts but aren't scared of people.

Mammaaof · 30/07/2020 14:11

Thank you we can't wait for him to come home (he's one of my mum's pups so see him very often XX)

elenacampana · 30/07/2020 16:38

Heya OP. Years ago now a neighbour knocked on my mum’s and said he wanted to let her know our cat had taken to sitting on his bonnet. There was nothing she could do about that, there’s not much your neighbour could do either unless they agree to keep it in and that sounds unlikely.

You can do things yourself though. There’s the water pistol idea - although admittedly not my favourite. Cats don’t like orange smells so you can scatter orange peel for a while, we do it at christmas around the tree. I think your new dog may solve the problem for you though. Our cat used to sit on the wall between the two yards (terrace, close quarters). Next door has a puppy now and goes mad when our cat sits on the wall - our cat doesnt like the puppy's barking so avoids the wall and their yard. Here's to hoping your puppy has the same effect! gorgeous photo btw!

Thank you, MNHQ for deleting. Just appalled that someone would advocate cruelty to an animal.

Randomname85 · 31/07/2020 09:55
@pawsies I just feel like I can't go outside into my own garden anymore, I've tipped the garden chairs forward now to prevent the cat sitting on there but now he's taken to my garden bench x
Hmm it’s a cat not a tiger.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/07/2020 09:58

@Mammaaof

My dad has offered to pick the cat up and drive it far far away 🤔
Then your Dad's a dick isn't he?
itsaratrap · 31/07/2020 10:02

Cat bites can be dangerous so please get her checked if her skin was broken, she may need antibiotics.
In future, water gun or squeezy bottle full of cold water, won’t do any harm but should do the trick. Keep it handy and squirt the cat every time you see it. Love cats, have my own, but your child should be comfortable and safe in her own garden.
