Given that they have to be worn almost everywhere else indoors by over 11s it would be the right thing to do. Adults working in schools have as much right to be protected as bus drivers and shop workers.

So AIBU in agreeing with the NASUWT that masks should be worn in schools by over 11s?

@mumsneedwine so sorry for your losses and the devastation you've seen

PablosHoney · 28/07/2020 21:33

It’s the disposal of them too, I was a matron at a secondary school for two years and interestingly never once caught anything from a child, make of that what you will and I got puked on. I did always sanitise the door handles and things they touched.

runbummyrun · 28/07/2020 21:35

@Mistressiggi stepping up to be a teacher?! Jesus no ... why on earth would I do that!?

As you can see there is not an empathetic bone in my body.

mumsneedwine · 28/07/2020 21:35

@Nat6999 😂😂sorry that is funny. Unions have been blamed for trying to look out for the staff. In fact it was all their fault schools were closed. Not the virus or the government apparently. Just the unions. They are trying to protect us (hint is in thread title).

CountessFrog · 28/07/2020 21:35

Thanks mumsneedwine.

Do you literally spray it on or do you have to rub it? Sounds a silly question but her glasses are new and a bit more delicate than I thought (round, metal framed). She’s quite clumsy and I can see her breaking them by rubbing them on her jumper 🙄

CallmeAngelina · 28/07/2020 21:36

good luck for September ..... have you thought about a change of career?!
No. Why should I?
How about I continue in the career I trained for and am bloody good at, and yet also have my employers take care to make my workplace as safe as they can for me?

mumsneedwine · 28/07/2020 21:36

@runbummyrun I hope your workplace doesn't see the same. It only takes one person. And you can't see it.

runbummyrun · 28/07/2020 21:37

@Mistressiggi that's actually exactly how I would fill in such a form .... the world went Health & Safety mad before this fiasco

I'll pop you some crayons in the mail next time I'm in the post office

mumsneedwine · 28/07/2020 21:38

@CountessFrog demister you spray on and can just leave it to dry. Shaving foam you wipe on and then polish off - I have rimless glasses so quite delicate but I've managed ok. And micropore tape on top of mask helps too.

runbummyrun · 28/07/2020 21:39

We already have as a family @mumsneedwine so you have my sympathy. But life goes on.

CountessFrog · 28/07/2020 21:39

That’s a funny thing about never having caught anything from those kids when you were a matron.

Thinking back, I don’t think I’ve ever caught anything from My own children. How odd. I’ve given them colds. They’ve had sickness bugs that I didn’t catch.

I did once catch ringworm for a child when I was on placement 25 years ago thoogh!

mumsneedwine · 28/07/2020 21:40

@runbummyrun the works went 'mad' to prevent kids being hurt on school trips. Because they used to be.

CountessFrog · 28/07/2020 21:40

(I’m getting that demister spray, thanks. I should have bought sturdier glasses but she wanted to look like a snapchat filter 🙄)

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/07/2020 21:41

mumsneedwine my plan will be whatever the guidelines are from our governing body at that time. Things change so quickly during this, who knows what they will advise by winter.
But I guess, if a child develops a cough I will have to refuse care for that child and let all the other parents know so they have the option of withdrawing their child from my care. Unfortunately it's going to be extremely difficult. I'm pregnant, self employed, dp is also self employed and we need to save every penny for maternity leave because MA doesn't even touch what I earn, and this was a surprise baby. I've had 9 weeks off already, dp had 11. In all honesty, if the guidelines during the winter months are that I have to isolate my family for 2 weeks everytime one of my minded kids develops a slight cough, we are fucked. I don't see the government extending any grants for self employed after August.

runbummyrun · 28/07/2020 21:41

Stop whinging about it then @CallmeAngelina

I'm glad you are good at your job and feel so passionate, but don't do it if you don't like the "new normal"

Change your career if it's too risky now, you didn't sign up for this did you?

LadyofTheManners · 28/07/2020 21:41
@LadyofTheManners oh dear god. Everyone wears one in hospital at the moment. All the time. Everyone. To protect everyone.
And there is no evidence of medical staff transmitting it to anyone either. There is no evidence of anyone giving to anyone else. You can't prove where you get it from.
Yes NOW they do. The rest of the time they don't
And that's purely because they're more likely to be in contact with a case, you know what with them being medical professionals
Sorry but I find it incredibly difficult wearing one to the point I have headaches and felt lightheaded after wearing one for 20 minutes in a shop today, I can be exempt but it's not worth the aggro from the Sheeple going along with what is essentially bollocks at this point. As the parent of a child with lung issues and Aspergers who is dreading going back due to mask wearing and feeling like he cannot breathe in one, this is the stupidest thing I've heard

Spain wore masks everywhere. Still suffering a second wave apparently.

mumsneedwine · 28/07/2020 21:42

@runbummyrun I'd quite like my own one to go on too. My kids have dealt with enough. So I want to return to work and be as safe as I can be. Yes life is a risk, but if I can counter that risk why would I not try.
And I'm very sorry for your loss. It's so hard when you can't be with them.

ilovesooty · 28/07/2020 21:42

@underneaththeash

You can not communicate properly wearing one, never mind teach.

Teaching Union leaders are just lazy buggers that cannot be arsed to do any proper work.

Where is your evidence for the latter part of that post?
Oblomov20 · 28/07/2020 21:43

No. I don't think it's right.
And it hasn't spread that much, in schools/classes that have been back, since the beginning, or since June 1st.

noblegiraffe · 28/07/2020 21:44

Sheeple

Oh dear god.

runbummyrun · 28/07/2020 21:44

I agree @mumsneedwine you should try. I wish you the best for September Thanks

mumsneedwine · 28/07/2020 21:44

@LadyofTheManners hospitals are a lot safer than schools will be. PPE and constant testing. Green, amber and red zones to protect everyone. Temperature tested on entry, 14 days quarantine before coming in for op, tested every 6 days.
Schools, just shove 2000 people into one space and see what happens.

noblegiraffe · 28/07/2020 21:45

EvErYtHiNg In LiFe Is A rIsK

Bet you look before crossing the road.

Splinkyplonk · 28/07/2020 21:46

Wear a mask all day five days a week and then see if you agree.

mumsneedwine · 28/07/2020 21:46

@Oblomov20 184 outbreaks in educational institutions in the last 4 weeks. Are you sure of your facts ?
