Absolutely gutted we cancelled our Greek holiday because of covid :{

We decided to cancel this year because we were concerned about having to isolate if anyone on the plane was found to have covid, and also because we thought it was too much money or a holiday that was potentially not going to be as good as pre/post covid what with masks, social distancing etc. But now I keep seeing pictures on Facebook etc of people seemingly having amazing holidays abroad. I also feel bad for my dc who've complied with home learning and been cooped up for months and should be on a lovely holiday nowSad

Travelling, or at least holidays, are very much a priority for me too. I look forward to them and save up for them.

But this year is just different. We all have to make adjustments. I only know one family who have gone abroad this year. One out of everyone I know! They arrived in Spain about a week ago. So now they'll be in quarantine when they get back. Perhaps they will feel it wasn't worth it in retrospect.

BritWifeinUSA · 29/07/2020 21:00

We are supposed to be going to Mexico in September. This is our third attempt to get away. Two previous trips (one to Hawaii and one to Mexico) have already been cancelled and I’m hoping three is the charm for us. But deep down I have a feeling it will be cancelled.

I have no idea when I’ll be able to see my mum in England again.

Newbiehere123 · 29/07/2020 21:00

@ZiggeryZaggy Aww thank you 🙏 I hope you find a lovely place too and be blessed with loads of ☀️ 🏖

Porridgeoat · 29/07/2020 21:04

It’s only a holiday. Why not ask the kids to help you plan a couple of weeks of nice things to compensate.

Eboney7 · 29/07/2020 21:09

I am in Australia/Melbourne at the moment we can’t go anywhere, we were going to Thailand for our yearly family holiday weekend so I understand when you say you gutted because I am gutted right now too @mostwonderfultime looks like there won’t be normal xmas this year it is all weird and different with this stupid C19

Aragog · 29/07/2020 21:27

Got to say ruined holidays is the least of it isn't it?

True. Losing three close family relatives during lockdown has been the absolute worst. It's still rubbish to miss out in holidays, 18th birthdays, parties, leaving school celebrations, etc too though.

Leflic · 29/07/2020 21:44

@ZiggeryZaggy

Any suggestions for the lovely UK holidays people keep mentioning here?

I am looking for somewhere that can accommodate a family of 5 (preferably with separate bedrooms) with a heated outdoor pool, a kids club (one where they can stay on their own for a couple of hours) , somewhere I do not have to cook and where the food is good (half board would be fine!) with evening entertainment that is suitable for the children... a play park would be good too.

ideally not Cornwall, although Devon will do!

This would replace the all inclusive holiday that I intended to go on.Grin

ZiggeryZaggyI don’t think you’re going to get as a good value all inclusive in the U.K. in August. People have to be paid minimum wage here for starters. Put some dates and party size into Booking,Com for starters.I’d look at doing less days if cost is an issue.

You could do worse than the Isle of Wight. ( unless you live on the Isle of Wight !) You get a bit of a trip away feel with the ferry, weather is some of the best in the country and the beaches are massive and sandy. There’s loads to do and it’s got a different feel to the mainland.
Loads of places are doing the 50% off eat out deal so Monday - Wednesday will be cheap.
Maybe a bit tacky but this ticks at least some of your boxes perhaps

ZiggeryZaggy · 29/07/2020 21:50

@Leflic - Thank you so much! That actually looks lovely, and I have never even considered the Isle of Wight. That might actually feel like going “away”, and there are entertainment passes included to keep the kids happy. DP likes the idea too, so it might even be the one 😃

MsTSwift · 29/07/2020 21:54

I get you op. Holiday and England are oxymorons to me. I live here so visiting another part of the country isn’t exciting. Bar the odd freak week it’s cold here. I hate the cold. Sitting on a beach in a jumper isn’t fun. If I can’t go abroad I won’t bother. I can get to a lovely beach from my house for a day trip so if there is a random hot day we can go for the day.

DreamTheMoors · 29/07/2020 21:57

Whatever you do, don’t go to Covidville AKA, the USA.

Catwaving · 29/07/2020 23:01

Why anyone has been silly enough to book foreign travel this year, I really really don't know

Seriously, you didn't see this coming?

Emmie12345 · 29/07/2020 23:40

I live in a popular tourist area and am desperate to go to Greece to escape the hordes arriving on staycation here

OwlinaTree · 30/07/2020 00:18

We are in the Isle of Wight now and it's fab tbh. Quiet for July I feel, but the weather's been pretty good so far. Beaches are really lovely and plenty of space. Had one wet day since we arrived. Loads to do on the island.

We have more than one freak week of sunshine here. It's been very hot here quite a bit in 2020 alone and has been the case for a couple of years.

I 'get' wanting to go abroad for a holiday but surely it isn't going to hurt anyone to do without for one year.

Aridane · 30/07/2020 04:11

OP - YANBU to be gutted.

Especially as Greece is doing so much better than the UK in controlling covid and a safer place most likely than the uk. And we still enjoy free healthcare in Greece until end of this year (plus additional pledges of free treatment by the Greekmgovernment).

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 30/07/2020 05:02

YANBU to be disappointed, but you absolutely did the right thing. Why take the risk of getting stuck in a localised lock down, or the risk of getting sick abroad with possibly inadequate hospital facilities and little or no travel insurance. Now is not the time to be travelling around.

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/07/2020 06:29

I would book something last minute, I know a lot of people who are abroad (none of them selfish idiots like many seem to be making out) and they say they feel safer abroad than here.

MsTSwift · 30/07/2020 06:34

For me a holiday here is not a proper holiday. Holidays are important to us. If it’s allowed we will go in a careful way (driving self catering etc). Dh and I will quarantine anyway on return we both wfh. Price worth paying. So shoot me.

Aridane · 30/07/2020 06:34

I am one of those, @PurpleFlower1983 - currently posting from Greece

Aridane · 30/07/2020 06:36

And it’s the best decision / thing I’ve done thi s year!

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/07/2020 06:39

@Aridane That’s brilliant! Hope you have a great time! We had just booked something last minute to the Canaries but sadly it looks like it will be cancelled. We may change to Greece if we can!

Swishswish26 · 30/07/2020 06:41

We are on a Greek Island at the moment, booked it one week before we travelled here. Greece have had virtually no cases of the virus. It has been one of the best holidays we have ever had. The resort is only half full but is super clean and the staff are so friendly. The weather is glorious and we just spend every day in the pool and at the beach. We also got an amazing deal and was half the cost of what it should have been.
No desire at all to spend money on a holiday in the U.K. which would have been extortionate and very crowded and likely to have been windy and rainy (not a holiday to me!)

MsTSwift · 30/07/2020 06:45

Sounds fantastic swish. I am wearing jumper and jeans here in south west England 🙄 there’s one day of heat coming then back to sub 20 degrees and windy. Chilly at night. English summer 🙄🙄

Aridane · 30/07/2020 06:54

Ditto, @Swishswish26 - except I booked on 48 hours’ notice. They have had one case here

AdoreTheBeach · 30/07/2020 06:55

YANBU yo feel sad you’ve had to cancel your holiday due to a pandemic. YABU yo book a holiday abroad now due to a pandemic.

Stay local, lots of lovely things to do all around in UK that are safe, social distance/mask. Save your money for foreign holiday until it’s safe (Virus is give or vaccine) and you can enjoy if.

Just because done are tucking it, doesn’t make it a good idea to do. Plenty in here lamenting and complaining about Spain. Now Cyprus - there’ll be more to follow as the virus has not gone away. Be safe, ding go abroad.
