We decided to cancel this year because we were concerned about having to isolate if anyone on the plane was found to have covid, and also because we thought it was too much money or a holiday that was potentially not going to be as good as pre/post covid what with masks, social distancing etc. But now I keep seeing pictures on Facebook etc of people seemingly having amazing holidays abroad. I also feel bad for my dc who've complied with home learning and been cooped up for months and should be on a lovely holiday nowSad

Go on holiday in Britain

This has to be the most annoying mantra on mumsnet. Some of us have spent years holidaying in Britain and now prefer to visit somewhere with different weather, languages, culture. Our holiday to Portugal has been cancelled. We will just save the refund money and use it for a holiday abroad next year.

Chocolateandamaretto · 28/07/2020 15:17

Imagine if Greece went the way of Spain though and you were looking at quarantine or trying to cancel last minute. Our Greek holiday is off as well but I am just relieved tbh as the stress would’ve outweighed the fun for me.

Also, many people from tourist areas have made it extremely clear on here that tourists ARE NOT WELCOME. We’ve booked a place in Devon in the middle of nowhere with a hot tub and bbq etc so we don’t actually have to see anyone. Don’t much fancy being told to ‘fuck off’ by the locals!

I'm going to Italy next week, can't wait x

Don't mind so long as you promise not to feed the fucking seagulls Wink.

Drivingdown you're so right! I know someone who lives in a popular resort in Devon and they hate summer there at the best of times when they can't move for caravans and cars packed along the coastal roads. This year will be worse.

jessstan2 · 28/07/2020 15:28

Why can't you have a lovely holiday here? There are some beautiful places in Britain. I wouldn't feel too sorry for your children, they have ways of enjoying themselves in the holidays and it is hardly going to kill anyone not to go abroad for one year.

SantaClaritaDiet · 28/07/2020 15:33

Let's see... locals have to cancel their Easter and May holiday and are catching up, so the amount of people trying to book something is much bigger than normal
especially after being stuck at home for month, and not even having day trip available

then most people are unable/have cancelled their foreign holidays

Prices have gone through the roof and everywhere is pretty much fully booked or very crowded, and overpriced as there's nothing special in this country. What's not to like...

cptartapp · 28/07/2020 15:39

We cancelled Halkidiki next week for exactly the same reasons. The teens are gutted. We've rebooked it for next year.p after exams.
Off to Yorkshire in a tent instead.

earthyfire · 28/07/2020 15:40

We have decided to still go on our holiday at the beginning of August, (unless things change between now and then and we are told we can't) we decided not to cancel as we have own accommodation and own car. We need to have a COVID test 72 hours before we fly although my husband has already had a negative test. The flight we are on has empty seats between passengers. However, if I was going to a hotel I would have probably cancelled the trip.

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 28/07/2020 15:44

Maybe you can book a last minute holiday. I am in Croatia right now and I really needed this holiday for the sake of my mental health. Other than mandatory masks in shops and public transport it's back to normal here!

howfarwevecome · 28/07/2020 15:47

We've cancelled our holiday and will be staying home. Lost our deposit, but felt it was the sensible decision. Rather sucks, but we'll survive it.

jessstan2 · 28/07/2020 15:50

Who says there's nothing special in this country? I've holiday'd both here and abroad and enjoyed both very much. Lots of people come from abroad for holidays here too, they wouldn't if there was nothing special about it.

I will say that going abroad, on the whole, always worked out a bit cheaper for us than having a good holiday here but we had great times.

This year is different for everyone all over the world and we just have to get on with it and do what we can. We're all in the same boat. Next year things will, hopefully, be easier.

@Manolin

Oh really that tax rate sounds very attractive. ( :

ArticFreeze · 28/07/2020 16:04

I think you’ve done the right thing op. People aren’t going to post saying they’re having an awful time, they’ll always make it look better than it is. The last thing you’d want is to go out there and be stressed about what you can or can’t do because the rules will be different to here. Why not use the money you’ve saved to book a cottage in the UK or have some days out?

ThatsNotMyPanda · 28/07/2020 16:07

I want my holiday to be relaxing. If I am worried about the possibility of a snap quarantine I could not relax. It would not be relaxing.

I'd rather wait and do it really well next time. It does not mean I do not feel a sadness, but holidays are precious to me.

Witchofzog · 28/07/2020 16:11

@minipie

How thoughtless and self centred of people to be posting Greek holiday pictures on facebook in the current environment, when so many have had holidays cancelled.
And how awful of people to post photos of their children. Some people can't have children. And all those photos of people with their mums when some don't have a mum. And don't get me started on photos inside your home when some people are homeless.

@minipie can you see how daft your comment is? People are always going to post holiday photos and I enjoy seeing them despite having my holiday cancelled. And I don't have a mum but I also enjoy seeing others with theirs. People can post what they want on social media

Cheeseandwin5 · 28/07/2020 16:23

To be honest I think you made the right decision, even if it doesn't seem so now.
You would have spent most of the time up to your holiday wondering if you were going to travel or even if it was safe to travel or even the ramifications to travelling ( as those going/in Spain are now doing)
Dont stress about the pictures on FB- No one is having as good a time as their pictures.
You can still have a good time at home and round the country. There are some lovely spots to visit.

RaspberryToupee · 28/07/2020 16:28

It’s sucks but you did the right thing, it’s just so uncertain. Plus it’s not going to be a holiday like you’re used to anyway. Worrying about if you’ll be contacted to isolate because someone on the plane out has come down with symptoms. Making sure everyone keeps their distance. Worrying how you get tested in a foreign country if you display symptoms.

When our holiday in May was cancelled, we bought a nice bottle of rum from the island we were meant to visiting, then had some wistful drinks. Can you buy a bottle of ouzo and get shitfaced? Or make some Greek meals? I love this Greek chicken traybake if you need inspiration - www.foodforfitness.co.uk/recipes/greek-chicken-tray-bake/.

minipie · 28/07/2020 16:31

Witchofzog of course people can post whatever they want, I don’t think it’s particularly kind though when they are showing off something that’s likely to make many of their friends feel bad. Personally I’m keeping pretty quiet about the holiday I managed to have since I have many friends who haven’t been able to. I also wouldn’t post loads of child pictures if I had lots of unhappily childless friends.

lifeafter50 · 28/07/2020 16:32

Agree with others about the rosy slant SM puts on these things. I was die to go to a firing destination and cancelled , it be of my friends went. To see her Instagram and FB it looks idyllic. The Whatapp she sends me out the inconveniences are another story -I I'm relieved not to gave hone.
The DC of the PP missed seeing their favourite Youtuber were saved the trauma and disappointment of seeing what a jerk the guyis on RL😀

Jaxhog · 28/07/2020 16:48

I have to keep reminding myself that it isn't necessary to go abroad every year on holiday. We've just postponed our big trip to New Zealand until next year. I'm gutted because we holidayed in the UK last year so we could afford it.

Cheeseandwin5 · 28/07/2020 16:58

@minipie

I would be interested what you do post.

I think (and apologies if I am wrong) but I think @Witchofzog point is that ppl will complain about anything.

minipie · 28/07/2020 17:07

Cheeseandwin5 I don’t really use social media, well not the sharing photos of my life type of sites. As you can probably tell I don’t like it much Grin I realise I’m in a minority these days though.

Witchofzog · 28/07/2020 17:14

@minipie I think you sound very considerate and thoughtful but it would have been fine to post your holiday photos. I was supposed to be going to Greece too and seeing other people's photos makes me more excited for my next one and happy for them that they got to go. As long as you are not posting crap like "Look at me on the beach while you suckers are at work" ( I have actually seen similar Hmm) then most people will be happy for you.
