My last thread was deleted because I was not being "civil" enough, I don't actually think it is a subject there is much room for civility in, but I will try!

My last post was to try and answer some questions about me. Here they are

I think I have answered these.

No I am not a strict vegetarian. I don't buy milk or dairy, but eat it in other peoples houses,

no I don't fly,

foodmiles, well, I take them into consideration, but they are not the only indicator of the environmental impact of food. Tomatoes grown in a heated greenhouse 2 miles away might have more environmental impact than tomatoes grown outside in Spain, and flown in.

I have 2 adopted children, 1 is an adult no longer living at home I currently have 3 foster children, but that is likely to change this week

Yes I have a pet, it came with one of the adopted children.

No I don't smoke

with respect, you don't know what you are talking about then. You have "never known" of something quite common.

Really? Because this article from September 2019 suggests that the average working week for teachers is 49 hours, with only 10% working in excess of 65 hours per week: www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-49728831

So even if all of the 10% doing more than 65 hours a week are up at 80, it’s not ‘quite common’ is it?

What does your day look like OP? You say you walk five miles to work and start at 5 am. What time do you get up, what time do you get home in the evening, and when do you fit in eating, sleeping and doing errands? You only have 8 hours a day where you aren’t working, and 3 of those are taken up walking to and from work. So how do the remaining 5 hours look? How much of that is sleep? How much of it is shopping? How much time do you spend with your children every day?

And do you think your life is a model that we should be seeking to replicate?

Sunshine124 · 28/07/2020 18:05

OP on the days you were walking to school and arriving at 5am, you were getting up at what 3.30am?

Time is a reasonable reason? When on a long day shift at work day I get up at 6am- breakfast, shower, make my lunch etc. Leave the house at 7am and start work at 7.30am. I finish work at 8.30pm and get home at around 8.45pm. I shower as soon as I get in as I work in a hospital- I did this precovid. I then have the general house stuff to do, dinner etc. I get about 7 hours sleep a night which is generally considered what a normal adult needs so please do tell me how I have the time to add additional 50 minutes to my day by walking instead of driving? Oh and that was before I was on maternity leave so when I go back to work I will throw in morning routine with a child.

ZeldalovesLink · 28/07/2020 18:06

So it was OP posting about failed contraception after all?

Christ, this entire thread is just one long fantasy spun by the OP. There isn’t a thread of truth in it anywhere.

Sunshine124 · 28/07/2020 18:07

Sorry should say time is not a reasonable reason?

Yes, quite surprised that this thread hasn't been pulled yet
Kelcat9494 · 28/07/2020 18:08

Oh is this the same poster from yesterday talking about wanting clean air for her dog and kids? I commented saying I don't care about her dogs or children and I still stand by it now Grin

SueEllenMishke · 28/07/2020 18:08

Haha I've worked in and with dozens of schools. I've never known one open at 5am.

And 80 hours a week..... I don't think so.

Mothermorph · 28/07/2020 18:08

A lot of people (I include myself) probably could, without an enormous effort, drop some short car journeys.
I'm amazed that other posters , without giving any practical solutions, can judge how/when other peoples journeys are unnecessary.
If breakfast club starts at 7.45 and I need to be at my desk by 9am a 45 min train ride away, there is not physically time for a 40 min walk.
If I live in a village and my children's school is in the next village 1.5m away but there are no pavements, it is not safe to walk.
If I am a carer and get limited amounts of respite time and I want to go shopping...?

These scenarios are examples, not my own situation...just to show that its possible to need to use a car for a short journey without it being because you are transporting a sofa or elderly relative.

DeltaFlyer · 28/07/2020 18:12

The early years teacher at my school puts in the most hours and still on my does 8am to 6pm at school so she doesn't have to take work home. So 10 hours

KarenKarendson · 28/07/2020 18:12

Well you can civilly ask. The answer is no though.

Londonmummy66 · 28/07/2020 18:14

I imagine that @mosquitofeast mainly commutes to her 16 hour a day job by flying pig - and that is not the behaviour of a caring vegan either...

SleepingStandingUp · 28/07/2020 18:15

I don't have a car, I have 3 children. Do I get a star or a black mark?

GinDaddyRedux · 28/07/2020 18:16

I imagine that @mosquitofeast sits with a whiteboard with different personas pinned to it, like an EastEnders writing room.

Debating which new "fact" to throw into the conversation to stoke up more AIBU readers to reply.

QuestionableMouse · 28/07/2020 18:16

Nah. Mine's a big manky diesel and drive everywhere.

I live in a village with very limited public transport (we get one bus an hour and it stops at 8) and no way of walking anywhere.

Kelcat9494 · 28/07/2020 18:16

@SleepingStandingUp

I don't have a car, I have 3 children. Do I get a star or a black mark?
Well children breathe carbon monoxide and you're responsible for 3 of them doing that, black mark for you missus.
Nicknacky · 28/07/2020 18:16

I don’t think mosquitofeast is coming back.....

mosquitofeast · 28/07/2020 18:17

I don’t think mosquitofeast is coming back.....
I am here, on and off, in between bouts of housework

I'm with you op. "Normal" is a serious problem for the planet. We need system change so that people can live differently.

mbosnz · 28/07/2020 18:17

I don't think they do - or the stories would be kept a whole hell of a lot straighter!

But maybe they should. . . Grin

Nicknacky · 28/07/2020 18:18

Aaaannd she’s back! In between housework, of course.

On your other thread OP you were a disabled blue badge holder and a foster career. But now you leave your adopted and fostered kids and walk 5 miles to another job?

Righty ho 👍

GinDaddyRedux · 28/07/2020 18:19

haha good point!

Hopefully @mosquitofeast I've given you inspiration.

Can I get a sneak preview of the next iteration of the story please? I think I've done my time typing in your two mega-threads today?

Indecisivelurcher · 28/07/2020 18:20

Air pollution is a attributed to 40,000 premature deaths a year in the UK. Many of our designated wildlife sites are 100x over their critical loads for air pollutants.

Coldemort · 28/07/2020 18:22

I'm with you on this one OP. I actually dont drive, and manage to get around fine on public transport or by using my legs. A lot of people find this astounding. Of course there are exceptions but a healthy person shouldn't be considering driving short distances. I'm not always convinced its quicker or less stressful, especially if it's in a built up area. We're just conditioned to jump in the car automatically.
On a side note, no one is saying give up driving. OP is just asking you to consider if the journey warrants a car. I had a similar jump on when I went vegan 5 days a week, apparently if you dont do it 100%, and wear a hairshirt, it's not even worth trying.
