To think no, there should not be additional support for people who are on holiday in Spain

If you dashed off on holiday when it’s bleeding blindingly bloody obvious that this virus has not gone away but was just subdued by lockdown, no you shouldn’t be entitled to any extra help with having to quarantine when you come home!

Some of us haven’t seen family for months, we have taken pay cuts and lost jobs, we haven’t rushed into pubs and bars and onto beaches, precisely because we do not want to see a second spike.

If you choose to go on holiday and to travel, that’s your right and your choice and it’s not illegal, but you should have been isolating on your return anyway. Those of us who have been more restrained do not want to catch it because you couldn’t wait a bit longer for a holiday, and you’re spreading it all over the place when you get back. If you chose a holiday, you can deal with the isolation to keep everyone else a bit safer.

I wonder if employers, knowing their staff had been in Spain will send them home if they break quarantine to go in rather than be unpaid.

I feel sorry for them. The air bridges plan was introduced far too prematurely and had the effect of lulling people into a false sense of security. For all the gloaters saying suck it up, i think it's really unedifying. So you were right all along, enjoy your moment but no need to rub peoples noses in it.

Bananabread8 · 27/07/2020 16:54

Sour
Grapes OP. People who have gone to Spain may have booked well in advance, they may also not seen their family for months just like you too your not the only one.

If this is about risk then it was the same weather the people coming back from Spain have to isolate or not. The government knows what they are doing indirectly...

StatisticalSense · 27/07/2020 16:54

YAslightlyBU.
While I would agree that they shouldn't be entitled to any financial help we do need to put into place mechanisms that enable them to obtain basic necessities such as food if they don't have anyone that they can ask to do it for them. If such measures aren't in place such people would have no choice but to break quarantine as you cannot go without food for 2 weeks.

pjmask · 27/07/2020 16:54

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss how insufferably smug you sound.

You choose not to do anything that is "non essential" to avoid spreading a virus that will be around for months, years, possibly forever without a vaccine. Fine, your choice, but don't lecture others about what they are doing, as their choices are just about stopping our economy from collapsing around us.

lunar1 · 27/07/2020 16:55

The only help should be to make sure people isolate. I know there is a family in my sons class planning to fly home two days before school goes back. There is no way they will isolate. The vulnerable will pay for people's selfishness.

Delilah78 · 27/07/2020 16:58

We recently moved to France and have family coming over so hoping for their sakes this won't happen!

Hillcrofta · 27/07/2020 16:58

I feel for those who booked these holidays before covid but not at all sorry for the people who lacked so much self control that they couldn’t go one summer without a holiday abroad

verypeckish · 27/07/2020 16:58

What about people who have had to travel to work in Spain?

Presumably their employer sent them there, so will have to take the responsibility to pay them while they are isolating on their return.

user1497207191 · 27/07/2020 16:59

@BatShite

Also the only person hit by the quarantine thing (in theory) that I know, is a frontline NHS worker who booked last minute once it was declared 'safe'. Says her mental health was massively suffering and she deserves a break. I can't disagree with her tbh..

But apparently, she doesn't actually have to actually quarantine because shes needed at work? Not sure how that one works.

It was never declared "safe". The travel ban was lifted - it's completely different. The govt stopped banning it, but certainly weren't encouraging it.
Happyheartlovelife · 27/07/2020 16:59

As sad as it is

I think if people booked a holiday SINCE the corona virus came about. Then no. You knew the risk. A virus doesn’t just disappear. The common cold has never disappeared. The flu has never disappeared. The smallpox only disappeared because of a vaccine.

However. Those that booked their holiday before the virus I feel shouldn’t of lost their money and I feel for anyone who did. That’s not fair and I don’t think they should have to forgo money

Though a holiday is a luxury. A holiday shouldn’t be put before bills. Or food. Whilst it shouldn’t be the case. It is.

For those saying what about people who work in Spain. That’s a different set of circumstances. The OP wasn’t saying that. She was saying those that took a holiday during a pandemic.

Corona virus hadn’t gone and yes the government said it was safe to travel. BUT they also said that quarantine might be reinstated at any point. Which it was. The government has also stated that England might be on lockdown again.

megletthesecond · 27/07/2020 16:59

I'm usually lovely but I agree because I'm utterly fed up now.

I won't get away for a year, can't stay with family (which is what we usually do) and can't afford holidays. Everyone else seems to be swanning off on hols. And I'm stuck here. .

Intelinside57 · 27/07/2020 17:00

Everyone had enough information to make educated choices. I'm not talking about people who had booked before the pandemic, but about those who booked quickly as soon as it was allowed.

blacksax · 27/07/2020 17:00

People knew there might be a chance that this sort of thing could happen, and they took the risk. They will have to take the consequences also.

I can't help wondering whether people about to travel to other countries are now bricking it, in case it happens to them too.

Happyheartlovelife · 27/07/2020 17:01

Can I also say.

My family live in Spain. I haven’t seen my family now for well over a year. I was due to go during the lockdown. My family were also due to come here to see me in 2 weeks

Neither is/has happened. I’m gutted. Devastated. But right now. That’s the way life is. I’d rather be alive to see them in a year. Than not at all.

SeasickPenguin · 27/07/2020 17:01

Couldn't agree more OP.

I was in favour of the powers that be christening this shitty virus "skiing holiday virus" as soon as it started spreading around Europe.

Can't stop entitled people from their lovely holli-bobs (bleurk...sorry) though can we and we dare not make them acknowledge it's their entitled arses spreading it about because that's quite simply not on.

Intelinside57 · 27/07/2020 17:02

Sent too soon...
If you are retired, or always work from home, you could decide that the possibility of 14 days quarantine was no issue and go.
If you knew that quarantine would mean no work and no pay then you don't go abroad, you have a holiday here.
People need to start taking responsibility for themselves and their own decisions.

user1497207191 · 27/07/2020 17:02

their choices are just about stopping our economy from collapsing around us.

Oh sorry, I hadn't realised that people were only booking for foreign holidays and going abroad to save the UK economy! Presumably, they'd have preferred to stay in the UK but decided to sacrifice their savings and holiday time to beggar off abroad. Nothing to do with wanting a sun tan and a few lazy days then.

user1497207191 · 27/07/2020 17:03

Fully agree with that. People need to stop blaming others and take ownership for the consequences of their decisions. These people took a risk - it didn't work out for the, so they need to face the consequences.

Lol the jealously and bitterness is rift

Hopeful201 · 27/07/2020 17:05

We lost our deposit because we chose not to go on holiday. We were scared of getting stuck in a far flung country or having to quarantine. It was our holiday of a life time, we won't be going next year either as the cost has been increased massively.

GoGadgetGo · 27/07/2020 17:07

I think that you are being unreasonable.

People have been told they can travel. If they have done so, it is not their fault the Governemnt has not changed the guidelines.
Looking at some of the destinations on tv there is a lot more social distancing abroad too. They are probably at less risk there then they are at locations in the UK.

'Some of us haven’t seen family for months, we have taken pay cuts and lost jobs, we haven’t rushed into pubs and bars and onto beaches, precisely because we do not want to see a second spike.'

The people that are doing the things that you are not doing have been told that it's allowed. You can't blame them and it doesn't mean that they want a second spike.

And as for spreading it all over the place when they get back. It is already being spread all over the place, by people already here and not abroad.

We will all have our own opinions on what we feel we shouldn't and shouldn't do, but it doesn't make it right to look down at others that tend not to agree.

I have not been to a pub, booked a holiday or gone out much except for work but I appreciate others may and if they are not breaking the law, go for it.

BuddysMum20 · 27/07/2020 17:07

my colleague is out there and will be fully paid to isolate for 2 weeks upon returning to uk

thats fine by me

Jiggeriepokerie · 27/07/2020 17:07

Hmm

What's this got to do with whether the govt fund quarantining holidaymakers? All you're doing here is making yourself sound like a martyr and 'oh so much better' than people who chose to do those things. They are allowed you know!

For what it's worth, I think we should be looking after the people who went out before the quarantine was brought in. Nothing if you choose/chose to go after that.

GoGadgetGo · 27/07/2020 17:08

not *now

Teacher12345 · 27/07/2020 17:09

To an extent, I agree. We had a holiday booked and should have left the first day flights started up again. We chose not to go and were able to get the holiday moved. If that wasn't possible we would have lost £1500. I understand why people would have gone rather than lost their money. To then be told they will have to quarentine too is another kick.
Doesn't mean they should be financially compensated but people should have a bit more empathy.
