to use a potty in the park?

garfieldrec · 27/07/2020 15:54

My 29 month old is a month into potty training. When he tells me 'weewee' I grab the potty from under the pram and let him use it. Is this ok?

I empty into a bush out of sight etc. Whole process takes about 20 seconds probably!

@Thisismytimetoshine

Why am I hard of thinking when you've literally quoted why I think pull-ups are necessary rather than free pissing? Op isn't going for a walk through a sparsely populated rural area, she's in a public park. Not everyone is happy to walk through other people's toddlers piss in public places.
Hahahahaha how is anyone walking through my toddlers piss?!

He wees in a potty, I then pour away around the back of a bush!

Just to say, I see people let their dogs shit right night to couples, right next to families picnicking, right next to kids playing - how is this acceptable but potties aren't?!

Did they insist on potties in public?

Not sure if that question was to me. If so no, my dc (well 2 of them anyway) would never go to the toilet in public, they are really private about it. We all have camel bladders too so it’s never been a problem. We went to the beach the other day, left the house at 10.30am and got home at 6pm none of us went to the loo in that time and the dc weren’t even bursting to go when we got back. I asked if they had been and they shrugged and said they didn’t need to. They are 7, 5 and 3. My dd has gone 49 hours between wees before.

49 hours! I get a bit twitchy at 3 hours and encourage loads of water

PMSL ( pun intended) at the idea that a toddler who pisses in pull ups when out and about is toilet-trained!

Surely there are two stages - potty trained and toilet trained? Potty trained when they can tell you they need a wee or a poo and resist doing it in their pants, but need to go pretty quickly.

Toilet trained when they only use toilets, not potties, and can hold on to get to a toilet. And even a toilet-trained child might have a problem holding on if they are hours from the nearest toilet - as would an adult!

I think it's important to remember that adults tend to have more regular bowels and, crucially, more autonomy over where they go and when.

That’s bloody stupid

MrsKoala · 27/07/2020 18:49

A? How is it stupid?

CheetasOnFajitas · 27/07/2020 18:49

You say "camel bladder" Mrs Koala others might say "dehydrated.."

Jellybeansincognito · 27/07/2020 18:50

I don’t understand this either.
You’re teaching your child to use the toilet, how are they meant to learn bladder control if you’re popping a potty in front of them the second they say they need to go?

Going for a wee before you go out to the park should be sufficient. If it’s not, you need to contemplate whether you’re potty training at the right time.

Well then pull-ups weren't necessary in your case? Confused. They're clearly toilet trained.
MrsKoala · 27/07/2020 18:50

The doctors don’t think she’s dehydrated. We have had to keep diaries of her fluid intake and wees.

Lweji · 27/07/2020 18:51

I hope that's a typo. 49 hours is more than 2 days. Not healthy at all. Confused

I seem to remember a post on here where someone had witnessed a toddler taking a shit on the potty in the middle of Starbucks. So it could be worse.

I remember the thread (or a similar one) - it should have gone on Classics but was deleted for privacy reasons.

The OP there whipped out potty in aisle of Boots. When somewhat bewildered staff gently asked her not to have her child shit in aisle 2 or whatever, she was adamant it was the right thing to do as said child was potty training and as Boots themselves sell potties 😂

Of course she was told she was BU - but undeterred she tweeted etc Boots at their outrageous potty defying behaviour.

Thread got deleted given you could sort of of identify OP from the tweets .

That OP - and perhaps this one - Performance Potty Training!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 27/07/2020 18:51

I did this for the couple of weeks it took to get my son to do an alfresco wee, he was remarkably against it to start with O_o I wouldn't bat an eyelid to someone doing it in the park, but the local cafe would be a step to far!

Potty training was so stressful, its a 20 min walk to the park so I kept putting it off which wasn't fair on him. Do what you got to do :)

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/07/2020 18:52

In the park is OK although if he could stand I'd use a bush. In church is not OK - I have actually witnessed this!

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 18:52

Well it clearly isn't. Nobody's advocating for that either.

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 18:53

If it's being investigated it's clearly been raised as a concern.
MrsKoala · 27/07/2020 18:53

Well then pull-ups weren't necessary in your case? confused. They're clearly toilet trained.

In the beginning tho when we were going out for the whole day I’d be concerned about them needing a wee, just in case, so I tried pull ups. Especially with dd as when she does go she goes loads. Even tho I knew she’d flood a pull up or nappy anyway I did try just in case.

Poetryinaction · 27/07/2020 18:54

And your child is not a dog.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 27/07/2020 18:54

I have 3 children. Now aged 19,16 and 9. I never took a potty to the park (or anywhere else outside the home). I could explain why in detail. But it is entirely irrelevant. Had I thought that taking a potty with me might have been helpful to my children, or me, I would have taken it. The important thing here, the only relevant thing - is that the OP finds it helpful.

OP - what you are describing is entirely reasonable. Some people will do it. Some won’t. But it is absolutely reasonable for you to take a potty out with you for use by your 2 and a bit year old son. He is not much more than a baby. Please continue to enjoy him as you are doing.

Jellybeansincognito · 27/07/2020 18:55

What part of that was silly op?

I’ve never had to take a potty out whilst potty training my children, they’ve never had an accident either. I must be doing something right.

CheetasOnFajitas · 27/07/2020 18:55

@Jellybeansincognito

Going for a wee before you go out to the park should be sufficient. If it’s not, you need to contemplate whether you’re potty training at the right time.

Because extended bladder control comes later and you don't stay in the house until they have learned it. Unless you are advocating that kids learn bladder control by being forced to walk home in piss soaked clothing, or having to change out of wet clothes in the park? My son would have found that quite distressing.

Whereas taking the Pottette out with us for security and gradually increasing the time between him saying he needed a wee and getting it out (often after attempting to walk to the nearest toilet) seems to have worked absolutely fine.

WillowB · 27/07/2020 18:56

In this situation I've just whisked them off to the nearest bush or tree for a wild wee.
DS2 still can't do standing up wees so I have to pick him up and hold the back of his legs.

I wouldn't personally be offended by anyone whipping a potty out but I couldn't be doing the with the faff of wiping it out & not having anywhere to wash my hands after so never bothered with one.

MrsKoala · 27/07/2020 18:56

No not a typo Lweji - I even had a thread about it as was going to take her to a&e but she wee’d under the table as I was getting my shoes on. I’ve obviously been to the dr about but they are unconcerned. They say it’s psychological. We are at 2 wees a day now normally, but it can be unpredictable. All my kids drink plenty of water - especially when out. I’m always asking them if they need the loo. They just say no.

Jellybeansincognito · 27/07/2020 18:59

one of the signs of readiness for potty training is weeing less.

If they’re not weeing less and you’re having to take a potty on a one/2 hour trip out, there’s something wrong.

  • in my opinion.
