to use a potty in the park?

My 29 month old is a month into potty training. When he tells me 'weewee' I grab the potty from under the pram and let him use it. Is this ok?

I empty into a bush out of sight etc. Whole process takes about 20 seconds probably!

Fair enough of the public loos are open sirzy but they aren’t and it is hard for toddlers and young children (and pregnant women!)

garfieldrec · 27/07/2020 18:19

@Thisismytimetoshine

If they can't hold on until they get to a toilet, they need to be in pull-ups. You wouldn't stick a potty in the middle of Mark's and Spencer's instead of taking him to the toilet, would you?
That's completely wrong.

@AdditionalCharacter
No toilets where you want to go, then don't go until he is more capable of holding until you find a toilet. It's a few months of not visiting your favourite places, but it is better long term as he won't be reliant on you whipped out the potty whenever he needs to go, regardless of where you are.
This is the most ridiculous advice I've ever heard just say op needs to go shopping or has other children they just stay at home.

But you can take the potty to somewhere private rather than just whipping it out.

I have no issues with wild wees when needed, but you need to teach them to make an effort to be discreet

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 18:20

but quite frankly I don't give a shit what people think 😃
Charmer. I bet you're so nice to be around.

polkadotpjs · 27/07/2020 18:20

Eyes up the potty cup for camping...

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 27/07/2020 18:21

i never did this, but i followed someone today, in the park, with a potty under the buggy.
and i remember seeing someone at the school with a potty under the buggy.
i think we just found a loo.

TerracottaTortoise · 27/07/2020 18:21

@Ginfizplease

I just don't see the need for this. I've potty trained two children and I just never needed to even consider bringing a potty!
TWO WHOLE CHILDREN?!
WaterOffADucksCrack · 27/07/2020 18:21

The perfect parents with perfect children are out in force!!! I don't believe them 100% though Next time try posting "please only post if you've done the exact same as what I'm doing". I really don't think it is fair to call people liars just because they have a different experience? Are you unaware children develop at different times? In case you are, it is usual for different children to reach milestones at different times.

What do you think pull-ups were invented for?

Heygirlheyboy · 27/07/2020 18:22

I remember seeing a thread years ago about a child on a potty... Wait for it... In the queue in Primark...doing a poo GrinGrin Can you imagine??!!

OhCaptain · 27/07/2020 18:22

But go ahead and judge a toddler if it makes you feel good about yourself

Judge a toddler? FFS! Grin

Again, the hyperbole.

And you mightn't have seen through the red mist of your indignation but I actually said, repeatedly, that OP's way was fine and her business.

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 18:23

Answer: to stop all those mingers who "don't give a shit what people think" encouraging their kids to piss in public when they can't hold on long enough to get to a toilet.

garfieldrec · 27/07/2020 18:23

What do you think pull-ups were invented for?

To make money for the nappy companies and keep kids in nappies longer!! Wake up

@Dreamingofkfc

Even when mine were newly trained they could make it to a toilet.

What would you do if you weren’t near a toilet?

MissClarke86 · 27/07/2020 18:24

The responses to this have blown my mind.

I’ve never even considered that it would NOT be okay for a small human being who is learning how to use the toilet and has not yet mastered bladder control, to not be allowed to use a potty. Surely the only alternative is using a bush (which I also don’t have a problem with)?

Some of you need to get a grip and stop being professionally offended by a bit of wee.

My daughter was scared of toilets for a long time so we had no other option - she would have just refused and done it in her nappy which would have meant she was going backwards.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it OP.

MrsKoala · 27/07/2020 18:24

My kids have all been terrified of the toilet and we’ve stayed at the potty stage for far longer than I’d liked. Dd is 3.9 and has been using a potty for 6 months and refuses point blank to entertain even the thought of sitting on a proper toilet. Fortunately she has a camel bladder and only wees once a day, otherwise we’d have to carry a potty with us everywhere

Poetryinaction · 27/07/2020 18:25

OP is going to just be a bit mean to anyone who disagrees. It's clearly an emotive topic!

AccountAntsy · 27/07/2020 18:25

If a child is being put in pull ups every time they leave the house then that isn’t actually potty training...

CheetasOnFajitas · 27/07/2020 18:25

@Poetryinaction

The rosebush comment makes no sense. Children learn to hold it or have an accident. Or wee behind the same bush you are chucking your full potty of wee into, if it's an emergency.
What difference does it make to you whether OP's son wees in a potty behind a bush or wees directly into the bush? She's not asking you to wear the potty as a hat afterwards.

No I'm only being mean to the ridiculous, crazy responses. I stand by it.

And a child of this age who is toilet training is worlds apart from a grown adult (or even an older child who is physically capable of holding for longer) going wherever and whenever” because they can’t be bothered to wait.

Exactly! Louder for the back!

Toddler bladders are small too

Kiki275 · 27/07/2020 18:27

I took a potty to a cricket match the other day, purely because I didn't know the ground or the available facilities. We're over two weeks into PT and not using pull-ups either. I knew he was due, but hadn't yet had, a poo, otherwise I'd have taken a flask like a PP suggested earlier. 5 minutes after someone else sat their toddler on one, mine indicated he needed to go urgently.
Not a single person batted an eyelid at either of us (obviously weren't sat slap bang in front of the clubhouse).
Go to the park, enjoy it and do whatever works for you OP.
