Holiday lost £1000

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:11

Had flights booked with Ryanair to Portugal. Have just found out the insurance doesn't cover pandemics.

Booked pre covid but looks like will lose the money. It's £1000.
AIBU to be absolutely gutted?

Anyone else lost out?

I keep hoping the flight will be cancelled but the same flight hasn't up to now and has mainly left on time. So very unlikely.

did Ryanair changed the times of your flight recently??
if so there's a chance that you can get your money back but only when you didnt accept the changes.
then on those basis you can ask for your refund.

TimeWastingButFun · 26/07/2020 19:12

Bloody hell, of course it's not unreasonable to be gutted. I would be too. Are they not even offering vouchers???

SkelingtonArgument · 26/07/2020 19:18

If you paid using a credit card, then you absolutely should be entitled to a Section 75 Refund. If debut card then a Chargeback claim

Can you explain how the chargeback or s75 refund applies if you simply don’t want to travel?

Italy is exempt from the government advice to avoid non essential travel

rookiemere · 26/07/2020 19:18

@Alwaysinpain I'm curious as to why you think the Olivers Travel poster would stand a good chance of getting a refund ? Unlike Portugal, Italy is currently a green country so the flights and the villa are both available for the dates booked. Unfortunately the fact that some of the party will not travel due to health issues does sound very much like a matter for travel insurance and unfortunately in this case it isn't covered there.

But OP if you booked on credit card it might be worth a punt as the flight is worthless if you are unable to visit the country it flies to due to FCO. Another useful avenue is Martin Lewis money site - they have a specific coronavirus travel section and I'd be surprised if the question hasn't been asked before in the Ryanair thread.

WeAllHaveWings · 26/07/2020 19:20

Not lost out on a holiday, but will lose much much more from self employed dh not being able to work for months and bills still coming in, I've lost thousands as my workplace has cancelled all bonuses this year.

I'd gladly swap £1k

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 19:20

@IndiaMay

I'm more curious how you managed to spend £1000 on Ryanair flights! How many people were going?! The most I've spent on ryanair is £45 each way
I wish it was £300 of it was for bags and seats. The rest the basic fayres.

I thought that travel insurance isn't valid on all corona issues therefore in the chance you get it, as its in the EU youd still get medical care if you have an EHIC card right?

But regarding id you're stuck out there worst case would be hotel bill, as your flights would be rearranged if cancelled and I guess Ryanair would have to pay hotel if they cancel a flight? Don't quote me on that though

AuditAngel · 26/07/2020 19:22

I’m supposed to be travelling to Spain on Friday, about £1,000 on flights. I was taking my nephew out, and SIL and BIL were bringing DD1 back.

I won’t go due to FCO guidance, EasyJet aren’t cancelling (yet), SIL wants to take nephew, so doesn’t want me to cancel nephew’s flight as now twice the cost. It’s going to be tricky to unwind. DH and BIL can’t go as can’t take time off for quarantine.

SIL coulD argue necessity of trip as owns tenanted property and Her daughter is already in Spain.

HM1984 · 26/07/2020 19:23

@IndiaMay I looked at flying to Morocco Ryanair, family of 4 was over £1000 with baggage (2 bags, no priority and all fares. My DC are under 10 too!!!) Luckily we didn't book anything though.

Because the risk of Covid is not removed! Green country or not - the risk still stands.

A lot of travel companies (even Haven in the UK where we're staying currently), has their 'Coronavirus Guarantee' which means even though they're open, if you don't feel safe traveling, then they'll refund 100% including deposit.

We’ve transferred ours to next summer but had to pay 2500 more. Dh and I have secure jobs so I’m holding onto that.

Charleyhorses · 26/07/2020 19:44

Any of you feeling poorly at all? If you were too ill to go, insurance would cover you if I remember correctly.

It wouldn't apply for Italy as the holiday is still available and there is no advice not to travel. In the case of the Portuguese holiday, they would be going against government advice to travel, therefore what they booked and paid for isn't available to them as such, so they should be able to claim.

That's dreadful for you, but of no relevance to the OP's situation.
rookiemere · 26/07/2020 19:47

@Alwaysinpain if the credit card companies paid out based on that, they'd be out of business in no time.

whereistherum · 26/07/2020 19:50

Martin Lewis did something about this on his show, if you check his website it is probably there. It was only if flights were booked pre covid, so it might apply to you

Milkshake54 · 26/07/2020 19:53

@coffeandteav are the flights only up to March because the full schedule haven’t been released?
Have you spoken to Ryan air?

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 26/07/2020 19:54

I booked a holiday through Expedia with hotel, flight and transfer.

The airline and transfer company both refunded me quickly but the hotel refused to refund. They said I could change the date to any time before the end of this year.

Expedia and my insurance both refused to refund as the hotel has offered a change of dates.

I don't want to go away this year. I don't feel comfortable travelling abroad yet and I've lost my job so I cannot afford new flights at the moment.

So I've lost the hotel money Sad

Yes they were not very helpful. Didn't know when they would be released.

At some point I do think you have to accept your choice not to travel when there are flights and hotels open and available is your own decision and your own loss. The destination is on the list of approved non quarantine countries, so I don’t really see why the airline or credit card company should lose money because you don’t want to travel. This is going to be a major issue coming out of lockdown where people don’t feel safe travelling but don’t think they should be the ones taking the financial hit, even though the routes are open and permitted.

If you really don’t want to lose £1000, go on holiday.

notalwaysalondoner · 26/07/2020 20:15

Ah, I thought the destination was Italy. I do see that with a quarantine destination it is quite different. Would you be able to work from home and quarantine when you returned?

Leflic · 26/07/2020 20:20

Could you not sell the holiday to someone else? It’s just a question of name changes. Even if you only get a couple of hundred quid it’s sonething?

Have you read the thread? Lisbon is not on the FCO approved travel list. Hmm

Thanks to those that have been helpful.

The holiday is really cheap to book right now so it would not be worth it to sell.
