Holiday lost £1000

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:11

Had flights booked with Ryanair to Portugal. Have just found out the insurance doesn't cover pandemics.

Booked pre covid but looks like will lose the money. It's £1000.
AIBU to be absolutely gutted?

Anyone else lost out?

I keep hoping the flight will be cancelled but the same flight hasn't up to now and has mainly left on time. So very unlikely.

That’s rubbish, I’m so sorry.

Yeahyoureright · 26/07/2020 18:13

When is the holiday? Would you not consider going if it hasn't been cancelled?

timeforawine · 26/07/2020 18:13

Can you change destination?

ChaoticCatling · 26/07/2020 18:14

Why can't you go?

RedskyAtnight · 26/07/2020 18:15

If you don't fancy travelling at the moment, why not just move the flights to another date in the future?

BBCONEANDTWO · 26/07/2020 18:16

I thought you could only go to Portugal for essential travel - surely that means that you should be able to claim back if the flight is cancelled?

rookiemere · 26/07/2020 18:17

Ryanair flights cost £90 per return flight to change.

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:20

It quoted me £460 to change to feb. The last date can change to is end of March.

I won't go as fco not approved so insurance is invalid and silly to go if not approved and the quarantine.

I had this issue with Ryanair.

There are a few options you could try as the FCO is currently advising against non-essential travel depending on how you paid:

Credit card - Section 75 refund
Debit card - charge back
Paypal - raise a dispute

My flight was still scheduled (and flew) when I argued successfully that my flight did not constitute essential travel. I didn’t have travel insurance.

Ryanair are bastards, good luck!

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:24

Would the section 75 still work if the flight left anyway?

honkytonkheroe · 26/07/2020 18:25

We had two sets of flights to Spain for early July and late July with Ryanair. We were lucky because our late July flights for £600 were cancelled and refunded whilst the other flights for £100 each (my daughter and 2 friends) weren't and we lost the money. All we could have done was changed them at I think £90 each - so no benefit. It's a shame you've lost so much. Might it not be worth you transferring flights though?

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:28

I would transfer if I could for April but February to me it's still risky for covid and the weather with it being winter.

You don’t have travel insurance with your bank account do you?

Sorry if that’s a silly question, I know I don’t. But DH does

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:36

Unfortunately nothing with the bank.

OP posts:
EvilPea · 26/07/2020 18:38

Bugger. It’s quite often on those premium bank accounts, but people don’t always know it’s there.

justasking111 · 26/07/2020 18:41

The figures for covid in Portugal are sooo low better than Wales. I would be happy to go there. It is the time on the plane that puts me off.

Snaptheirfingers · 26/07/2020 18:44

Yes I've lost £2000. Had travel insurance which did cover pandemics, they have mis-calculated and only paid me £300. The package tour company have offered me £700 in vouchers, I don't want vouchers. It's week 19 fighting for my money back!

Devlesko · 26/07/2020 18:44

You aren't covered for natural disasters neither or civil war.
I'm sorry you lost your money, that sucks. Thanks

kittensandcoffee · 26/07/2020 18:50

What travel insurance did you buy? 3 months later and I won the battle for my £900 flight money back (I choose not to go due to travel warnings).

Clymene · 26/07/2020 18:51

Are you sure that's the latest you can change them to? I've changed my Portugal flights to next summer (cost £200 for 2 people so 4 flights)

somthinginthewoodshed · 26/07/2020 18:54

Oh yes I’ve certainly lost out. Booked a holiday villa with Oliver’s Travels for this August in Italian Lakes. This was a very special family holiday with 3 generations, oldest 72, youngest 2, one family member with COPD. Paid deposit of £3,500 August 2019. Don’t feel we can travel this year due to the pandemic. Transferring the booking to next year will cost £1100 more - I’m not made of money - insurance company don’t cover pandemics, Oliver’s Travels (who presumably had a cut of the hefty deposit) have relinquished all responsibility and say it’s down to the owner in Italy, where U.K. law doesn’t apply. I only wish it was £1000 I’ve lost. I WISH I’D NEVER HEARD OF Fu#@%ing Oliver’s Travels; all I’ve had from them are empty platitudes. Yes I’m frocking gutted too.

coffeandteav · 26/07/2020 18:55

Yes if look on the Ryanair calendar it only goes up to 27th March. Man to Lis.

I will try insurance nothing to lose I guess.

If you paid using a credit card, then you absolutely should be entitled to a Section 75 Refund. If debut card then a Chargeback claim. I feel you stand a massive chance of a full refund
IndiaMay · 26/07/2020 19:08

I'm more curious how you managed to spend £1000 on Ryanair flights! How many people were going?! The most I've spent on ryanair is £45 each way
