to suggest NOT wearing masks, but instead wearing . . .

the charmingly named Neck Gaitors? They have been my all-purpose solution to the Great Mask Dilemma of 2020. They're washable, lightweight, stylish, useful, versatile, you can wear them as a scarf and pull them up as needed, or as a hairband or even a bracelet if it's too constricting to keep it around your neck. They're cheap to order from Amazon by the half dozen--they have seriously helped me keep my sanity.

I’d rather wear a mask - snoods are uncomfortable.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 26/07/2020 16:31

I wear something like that sometimes, it meets the regulations, guidelines, whatever they are, it covers mouth and nose

PeddlingInTheRain · 26/07/2020 16:32

I'd be worried people might think I'm a gang member wearing those on the right Grin

The galaxy print ones are nice though.

TheClitterati · 26/07/2020 16:35

I've been using those Hygge Headbands for the same purpose. They will come
into their own when the weather cools

RuthW · 26/07/2020 16:39

@ifeellikeanidiot

I have loads of these £3 from decathlon. Dd uses them to keep hair off face when we piling on eczema cream. They're also the only thing I've found that preserves my curls so I get good second and third day hair.

My dad has been using his as face covering in shops.

Please tell me more about preserving your curls.
@anon5000

The "alternatives" are not as good as containing the virus. Otherwise what is the point of anyone wearing a medical grade mask? Maybe the people treating us in hospital should wear a snood over their face?
We are explicitly supposed to not buy up medical grade masks for our weekly socially-distanced trips to Lidl and to leave the medical grade masks for healthcare staff who are right up close to people who actually have coronavirus!

Have you been living under a rock for six months?

OddBoots · 26/07/2020 16:44

@threesecrets

I was so desperate the other day when I was away without a mask that I considered wearing clean pants. I have big knickers
I have seen some knickers that can pull up to meet the bra but I love the picture of some you can pull up over your mouth and nose too.
SusieOwl4 · 26/07/2020 16:47

@YetAnotherSpartacus

It’s called a virustatic shield mask

EmpressSuiko · 26/07/2020 16:51

I use one of these over my disposable masks, I like having the extra layer of protection as I have such a tiny head it’s difficult to make the masks fit without gaps, even after folding them in a special way so this was they perfect solution to give me a little more protection.

SusieOwl4 · 26/07/2020 16:52

@PotholeParadise

I am with you

It’s been said over and over again it’s to protect others not yourselves .

WHO said don’t use medical masks and the effectiveness of other masks had not been proven . Then WHO changed their mind and the government took advice . We did not need them when we were on lock down as most of the vunerable were avoiding shops and only going out for food. In pubs we are supposed to be sitting apart or outside if possible . But shops are the hardest to socially distance as people tend to zig zag about not think and want to go back to areas . So to me it makes sense .

I do wonder what papers or social media people are looking at .

happinessischocolate · 26/07/2020 16:54

I order this one 🤷‍♀️😁

Alabamawhirly1 · 26/07/2020 16:56

Thanks op
I can't cope with the masks, part physical part psychological but I've not been wearing one.
I've just ordered somthing simular only it's chiffon and does tuck over your ears. It appears to be what Korean women use to keep the sun of their faces.

Anyway, hopefully I'll get on with that better and be able to go to the supermarket without getting pissy looks from busybodies.

feistyoneyouare · 26/07/2020 16:57

I have a few of these, seem to work well, though in order to stay up they have to be on the small side which is a pain.

tabulahrasa · 26/07/2020 16:58

I have loads of buffs for putting my hair in, so I alternate them with masks depending on what’s in the wash...

My masks are better tbh, not as hot and less intrusive feeling than it covering your neck as well (though I double the buff up)

Alabamawhirly1 · 26/07/2020 17:02

But you could easily suck a virus through a piece of paper. Gaiters are very easy to breathe through, and they would offer very little protection.

You assume that everyone wears a mask for "protection". Many of us don't feel the need for any further protection than a working immune system. We're wearing them because we are being forced too.

SockYarn · 26/07/2020 17:07

Oh God, I can see how this is going to go.

We've moved through "WEAR A FUCKING MASK" with general sneering about people who aren't, even though they are exempt.

We are now into the next stage of the ROOLZ with people making up their own laws/rules about what they consider to be an acceptable face covering, virtue signalling that they are better/safer/more considerate because they are wearing a surgical mask instead of a buff or whatever else.

It's just like the lockdown with the hysterics pouring scorn and condemnation on people who went out for a walk or sat on a bench for a snack - even though it was never illegal or banned, it was not up to their own personal, self-devised code of conduct.

I've come to the conclusion that some people are just judgemental arses.

wanderings · 26/07/2020 17:08

@randomer I have a sneeking suspicion that bickering about face coverings is a complete red herring to distract from other matters.
Of course it is. Just like everything else. Saint Boris is delighted that we're frothing about this, just like he was about murderers who sit on park benches, buy Easter eggs, or don't clap for the NHS. Because while we're busily arguing about it, we're not scrutinising him.

Yup. Makes you wonder what kept them going pre Covid.
PinkFondantFancy · 26/07/2020 17:10

This is exactly what I have and like the convenience. I have to say though, I have a nagging concern about a bit of fabric I have hanging around my neck gathering up airborne virus and then I pull it up against my nose.... Pretty sure none of the studies have checked whether they help or hinder, expect they're only done on proper masks with proper mask hygiene, which noone does

PinkFondantFancy · 26/07/2020 17:13

Oh LOL just read the full thread. Now we're fighting over what kind of face covering is acceptable according to made up MN rules?! Wow. Pretty sure anyone facecovering is all that was required. What's next, thought police on how happy or otherwise you are about wearing it??

MrsExpo · 26/07/2020 17:15

If they are made of a knitted fabric, won’t they be too porous to have any meaningful effect as a barrier? Try the candle test .... if you can blow out a candle whilst wearing one, you might as well not bother.

IncrediblySadToo · 26/07/2020 17:17

Thank you for the laugh, they've been thin on the ground lately!!

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 26/07/2020 17:25

Oh arse

I meant to say yes 😀

I agree with pothole

I have ‘medical’ masks but have also got fabric ones...as advised by the government

IncrediblySadToo · 26/07/2020 17:25

They increase your own risk, as do masks if you pull them down to your chin. Pulling them up again risks transferring any virus you've picked up from others onto your mouth or nose.

I read the whole article and it made sense, so I've been trying really hard not to pull my mask down to my chin (in the car between shops) and up again. It's ON or it's OFF.

I like the idea of these (For winter) as they be much simpler, but I don't want the increased risk.
