To think I am not overweight?

orangegerbil · 26/07/2020 07:51

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

I find it hard to believe people shorter than me aren’t chubby or outright ‘fat’ at 11st. I’ve just weighed myself and taken this pic ahead of getting on my treadmill. I’m 10st 2lb, just over 5’7”, have 32FF boobs, 25% body fat (I have body fat scales). I am not slim. I am within a healthy BMI but at the top of my BMI allowance I am very chubby indeed. I am apple shaped with long stick legs (excuse the bruises, I have several clumsy dogs).

@YellowRosesX I would say you are a size 14

YellowRosesX · 26/07/2020 14:03

I don’t think you’re chubby at all @AnonForFatPost

Noti23 · 26/07/2020 14:05

I’m 5”3 and I would be quite big if I were 11 stone. SIL is also 5”3 but she’s 10.5 stone. She squeezes herself into a Size 10 but her clothes are far too small and are stretched. I find that sizes in M&S and Next tend to be bigger. I’m an 8 but I would have to get a 6 in those places.

I don’t think you sound fat but maybe a bit pudgey for 5”3. A BMI of 27 isn’t that overweight so I wouldn’t worry.

TheId · 26/07/2020 14:09

YellowRoses I think people are being harsh. I'd say size12. You look like you work out and have a body a lot of people would aspire to small waist, flat stomach, bigger bum but toned.

That's what I meant earlier though.

It's impossible to judge the size of someone's clothing unless you're completely familiar with the shops its been bought from.

Also impossible to guess someone's weight if they're not naked or wearing a bikini/underwear.

Not that I'm suggesting for a second she posts a photo like that Grin

YellowRosesX · 26/07/2020 14:12

I don’t find it harsh @theld! But thank you.

A lot of people are in denial about their weight.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/07/2020 14:17

I think big boobs must weigh a LOT, though. And "big boned" is surely a thing as I am the opposite. I have no boobs to speak of really, no bum and am not hip-y at all. My arms and leg bones are narrow and don't carry much fat. I'm 5 ft 6 and weigh 9 stone which is in the low-middle ideal weight range on charts but I'm probably seriously unheatlhy as my tummy is massive in comparison. I have never dieted in my life and assume that hormones and middle age are playing their part now.

I laugh at the women in work who look at me, see only the flat chest and bum and skinny limbs and say "Oh you must be a size 8" and just don't believe me when I tell them I can't fit in most size 12 trousers comfortably, never mind an 8. An 8 top is fine but bottoms are totlaly different. So I completely believe OP that different parts of a body do weigh differently individually I think, and that her waist can be that narrow even though she is heavier and smaller than me.

We are all different shapes and sizes and I can guarantee that if my boobs were bigger I wouldn't be getting "Oh you must be a size 8" comment by other women who assume I'm that size all over!!!

theendoftheworldasweknowit · 26/07/2020 14:18

@orangegerbil I have to say, I'm a bit baffled as to how you can fit into a size 10 at 11 stone if you're 5ft 3. You say you're not stuffing yourself into your clothes, which would suggest the size 10 is the correct size. Have you tried calibrating your scales?

I wonder if you are in fact somewhat lighter than you think you are? That would be the obvious explanation. Are your scales analogue or digital? Are they on a flat, hard surface? If you move them to another bit of the floor and stand on them, do you get a dramatically different result?

A little tip after checking the floor surface is OK is to pick up something heavy and stand on the scales (to force them to read a different results), then to try weighing as normal.

bibbitybobbitycats · 26/07/2020 14:22

Fressia123 you look great!

stopitkenneth · 26/07/2020 14:29

I don't get it either, OP. I'm 5'4", currently weigh 9st7. I've just measured myself. Hips 36, waist 28 (I've never had much of a waist) and chest 35. I've hit 11stone once before, and I was definitely overweight. Although I'm a healthy BMI at the moment, I should be a few pounds lighter as I'm still quite pudgy even though I generally fit into a size 10.

Your scales must be wrong!

Fressia123 · 26/07/2020 14:31

Thanks @bibbitybobbitycats! In hindsight I prefer being chunkier. ATM I'm 2st heavier and a size 8. My happy middle is 1st lighter and a size 6/8 . At my lightest I had no boobs and didn't let my DP see my fully naked for a few months.

Oddly enough my waist is smaller now (last measurement) so it goes to show that even the same body can have different proportions at different weights.

Fressia123 · 26/07/2020 14:37

That's me at 10.5st (same height as OP) I don't think I look overweight but technically I am. As I've mentioned before I do train but all I e been trying to say is that what the OP is saying is 100% believable. She's borderline. I was shocked when I saw I was 10.5st I thought I had to be 10st at most.

She isn't. I read it as meaning that if she were at the top of the healthy BMI weight she would be chubby.

As it is, at 5'7 and 10st2 she has a BMI of around 22.

That’s right @AssamorEarlGrey. I am chubby for my own tastes but I am bang in the middle of my acceptable healthy BMI range. At 11st, I am at the upper end of healthy BMI but definitely chubby.

formerbabe · 26/07/2020 14:46

You look nice in both sets of photos but I actually prefer the photos where you're slightly heavier but that's just my opinion obviously.

I generally think women look better with a slightly softer, curvier shape but I think I'm in the minority here.

Malbecblooms · 26/07/2020 14:49

I'm 5ft 6 and 9st 12lb. I'm an 8/10. At 10.9 stone I had a tummy on me and my BMI was 24.5.

If you measurements are correct you are s bit overweight.

We are so used to seeing larger people we don't recognise what size humans are supposed to be.

bibbitybobbitycats · 26/07/2020 14:50

Fressia123 · 26/07/2020 14:53

I am indeed @bibbitybobbitycats, size 8 at 10.5st but I don't think half a stone makes any difference to the OPs case.

AnonForFatPost · 26/07/2020 14:57

Isn’t that weird, @Fressia123? Half a stone makes a massive difference to my build and I’m 4/5 inches taller than you and OP. You look great in both photos btw.

Fressia123 · 26/07/2020 15:00

Exactly Anon your photo and one of my photos show the same BMI, yet the body build/composition looks fairly different.

RandyLionandDirtyDog · 26/07/2020 15:03

BMI Range is fairly bollocks for many people.

I’m similar to the OP and at 5’4”, a size 8 at just over 9 stone. I have naturally big boobs, small bum, but I also have chunky ankles and size 8 feet. Sad

My best friend at school had tiny hands and size 3 feet but we were both the same size in clothes. She used to look so much better in dresses and skirts than I ever did because she had thin dainty ankles.
