Life is short/ too short for....

Sticks and Stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me Hmm

Biggest load of bollocks out there. Broken bones heal much more easily than emotional wounds.

DancingInDespair · 25/07/2020 18:54

"The truth always outs"- no it bloody well doesn't.

ruthieness · 25/07/2020 18:57

"Everything happens for a Reason!"

Errr NO!

Thingsthatgo · 25/07/2020 19:00

The one that really irritates me is ‘wasn’t mean to be’ or conversely ‘it was meant to be’.
I am not a fatalist, and I don’t believe that my life is mapped out for me already. The idea that something ‘wasn’t meant to be’ just seems like a lazy way of making everything seem alright. Whenever someone says it to me, I just reply ‘oh, I don’t believe in fate’ and they often say ‘no, me neither’ Confused

No smoke without fire.

ShinyFootball · 25/07/2020 19:03

If you go out with wet hair you'll crash pneumonia Grin

ShinyFootball · 25/07/2020 19:03

Catch...

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 25/07/2020 19:04

Sticks and stones.
"They're just jealous."

Twiceover · 25/07/2020 19:05

What's for you won't go past you.

Scottish (I think) version of it was/wasn't meant to be. So fatalistic.

paperandfireworks · 25/07/2020 19:06

You're only as old as the woman you feel.

iklboo · 25/07/2020 19:06

You've got to stand up to your bully. Hit her back.

Thanks, mum. That went well.

Smallinthesmoke · 25/07/2020 19:07

"Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end."

Such a load of bullshit.

SauvignonBlanketyBlank · 25/07/2020 19:09

If you sit on a cold surface you'll get piles

Skyliner001 · 25/07/2020 19:10

Stuck and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.

SparkLee · 25/07/2020 19:10

ruthieness I agree, awful saying. IME it's usually said by someone who has had much better luck in a particular area than the person they're saying it to. Eg, someone who is struggling to have children being told 'everything happens for a reason' by someone who already has children. Patronising and nasty.

Scout2016 · 25/07/2020 19:10

"As easy as taking candy from a baby." It's actually bloody hard to get things out of the fist if a tiny child.

maidmorion · 25/07/2020 19:11

"Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end." I like that one, because it tells you to keep going. What's the other view "it's shit now, and it'll be shit forever"?

"They probably fancy you"
"She probably led him on"
"Honesty is the best policy"
And yes, "truth will out", nope, sometimes everyone believes the lie.

NameChange84 · 25/07/2020 19:18

"Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end."

Yeah. What the FUCK is that about? I HATE that one. What if you died in a terrorist attack? Or in war? Or die all alone and you’re water by your German Shepherd.
It’s bollocks because it makes out there’s a happy ending for everyone. I especially hate it when people say it to those struggling to conceive or who’ve experienced stillbirth/death of a child. The sort of people that say it are usually quite fake and lacking in tact and sensitivity.

NameChange84 · 25/07/2020 19:19

“Eaten” by your German Shepherd..not Water Confused

GymSloth · 25/07/2020 19:20

Slept like a baby

...unless of course they mean waking every couple of hours and wetting themselves!

TheProvincialLady · 25/07/2020 19:21

“Happy mum, happy baby”

101jobs · 25/07/2020 19:23

“Hard work never killed anyone”

Marshmallow91 · 25/07/2020 19:23

@NameChange84 and @Skyliner001 the full version of that is actually "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Over time the scars will heal, but words are ghosts that haunt me"

Which I think is much more apt. It seems to have been shortened over the years...

iklboo · 25/07/2020 19:24

@Marshmallow91 - thank you for that. Makes much more sense in full.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 25/07/2020 19:24

Almost everything my mother ever told me! But particularly;

"Don't eat too much sugar or you'll get worms"
"Never tell a man he's wrong"
"nobody will ever want you because you're so unladylike"
"Children should be seen and not heard, and preferably not seen either"
My father had a long list of rules he liked to tell us. They all started with "A good soldier..." So "A good soldier is always 5 minutes early for everything", "A good soldier never volunteers" and so on. I have never wanted to be any kind of soldier, much less a good one! But at least his sayings usually had some sort of sense, my mothers were just either stupid or spiteful.
