Another vote for ‘sticks and stones....’. Anyone who believes words can’t hurt know jack shit about words or hurting. Also, all the bollocks about ‘dealing’ with bullying. ‘Stand up to them and they’ll run away’ Yup, and then return with five mates and kick crap out of you.

"Respect has to be earned".

Horseshit.

Respecting everyone should be the default unless they give you a reason not to do so.

MactheRover

In my family it was:

Pigs sweat
Men perspire
Ladies glow.

Said to reprimand me if I ever mentioned that I was sweating!

Strangely it never did prevent me from sweating, though... Confused

My family had a weird one...
If we accidentally burped and said "Pardon me", my grandparents on one side would say "You don't pardon pigs".
Fucking rude. We couldn't help burping and at least had the manners to excuses ourselves.

@Manolin

My knowledge came from a half-remembered uni course, but after a quick look at wikipedia that could have been then original source Grin. Are you Arabic? You seem to know more that me about the blood/milk brothers interpretation. I'm a little confused about your description of blood brothers being unrelated - would love to understand what you mean.

I realise that you were saying that the popular saying "blood is thicker than water" is untrue. I have no argument about that.

My question was that you stated the original proverb was (variously) from the bible and middle eastern tribes and goes "The blood of the covenant, is thicker than the water of the womb." That long form is definitely not in the bible and I can't find any old sources on it from any culture. So I was curious where you heard it. Because I have seen claims about that being the original a few times but think it's an urban legend because I can't find anything on it pre-1990 from any country.

Obviously this is tangential to the thread.

Your school days are the best days of your life.

If I'd believed that, I would have spent most of my childhood in utter despair.

Me too. I am still waiting for 'the best days' of my life.

My mum will never stop peddling our "everything happens for a reason" and "our paths are already chosen". - my friend's baby died recently of cancer. What possible fucking reason could there be for that happening? And which sadistic dick head singled out a baby out for such an devastatingly short "path"?

Words like this are spoken from a place of complete and utter privilege where the speaker probably had nothing worse happen to them than their car broke down once.
