Cutting other people's toe nails...

Lottle · 24/07/2020 23:39

My mum cuts my dad's toe nails. She also cuts my brother's toe nails. He is 20. She says she thinks this is quite common and normal. I didn't think it was! Please help clear this up for us!

(no medical reason why these guys can't do their own. Apparently my dad doesn't do his own properly and then they sometimes scratch her in bed!)

YABU - this is common /I do this for others/this is normal
YANBU - this is so weird

Well, I do my dads but he's 82 and bedridden.

Cutting partner's nails for them I would say is not that weird. Cutting an adult child's...Confused

Pelleas · 24/07/2020 23:43

My husband won't let me near his after one over-enthusistic attempt early in our relationship (I'm a sporner).

Ponoka7 · 24/07/2020 23:47

I cut my DD's (22). Someone else doing them can get a better shape and finish. We think nothing of letting strangers do our nails, hair and intimate waxing etc. Why not a family member?

Having said that, if a Chiropody course had have been available locally, it's something that I would have been interested in doing.

fairlygoodmother · 24/07/2020 23:49

I only managed to get my son to consistently cut his own nails when he was about 12-13 and I thought that was bad!

On the other hand I live in NYC and most of the adult women I know have regular pedicures and never cut their own toenails. So when you look at it that way it’s not really strange.

On balance, it’s a bit odd but harmless.

Prettybluepigeons · 24/07/2020 23:49

I have done my 82 year old mother's toenails because she couldn't reach I wanted to retch. It was a labour of love.
She now has a chiropodist to do it. (Shudder)

wouldntmindbeingmrsw · 24/07/2020 23:49

I think it's well weird. I wouldn't cut my DD's toes. He can do it himself.
But my friend does cut her DD's and her two sons aged 19 and 14........Well weird.

CardsforKittens · 24/07/2020 23:51

I have a hard enough time cutting my own. Urgh.

Lottle · 24/07/2020 23:54

Never thought of it in terms of us paying strangers to do it. Fair point!

🤢 I used to have to do my dads and his feet are like hobbits feet with huge thick nails. Thankfully he has now agreed to see a chiropodist

thecatsarecrazy · 25/07/2020 08:58

I do my dad's because he cant see to do it or reach, I wouldn't do anyones by choice though

Doodlebug5 · 25/07/2020 09:19

I cut my partners because they scratch me in bed and he doesnt usuallly notice so i cut them for him

LeoTimmyandVi · 25/07/2020 09:47

I was having this exact conversation with my 13 year old son last night - whilst cutting his toe nails Grin! I said it was probably time for him to start cutting his own, he was not keen!

My dad cut my brothers until he was 24ish!

MintyCedric · 25/07/2020 09:47

@Rose789

A couple of my dad's are like that. I have a little battery operated filing gadget for the tough ones. It's not perfect but it keeps things under control without the need for anyone else coming in amid the barrage of carers, doctors, nurses etc that we have at the mo.

I don't mind doing it tbh. Stuck an old black and white film on the other day and gave him a mani-pedi, it was the most engaged he's been in weeks.

peacockbutterfly · 25/07/2020 09:53

Adult feet make me feel ill - I couldn’t do this. My DC did their own toe nails from early teens onwards.

SimonJT · 25/07/2020 09:55

I do my boyfriends fingernails and toenails, his big toenails are a weird shape, they curl in at the sides so you have to cut them every few days as you can’t cut them short.

He has limited use of his hands so he can’t do them himself. I have a phobia of long fingernails so I cut them almost daily.

Mia1415 · 25/07/2020 09:55

I wouldn't cut another adults toenails even if you offered me a million pounds! Yuck

EatsShootsAndRuns · 25/07/2020 09:58

My husband cuts mine. He makes them look really nice. They end up wonky if I try.

shinynewapple2020 · 25/07/2020 10:42

I wouldn't do it for an able bodied adult

Yeah have done for elderly parents but why would you cut toenails for your adult DC and partner?

HolyForkinShirt · 25/07/2020 10:58

I hate feet. Since lockdown I have cut my grandads because he can't do it himself. . But it certainly isn't my favourite thing to do !

I would not do this for anyone unless I really needed to!
