To think that Uber Eat costs are getting ridiculous

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 19:55

Went to order a takeaway. I have all the apps etc but usually use uber eats thanks to the tracking.

For a restaurant less than a mile away - deliver costs and service fees added £6 to a £22 order!
Literally switched the basked over the justeat and costs were £0.50.

Aibu to think that this will really turn people off using it?

It will put people off but maybe they have more business than they need or is it a better service?

Lockheart · 24/07/2020 19:57

Don't use them then, problem solved.

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 20:02

@helpmum2003 I would say that the service is probably inferior to Just Eat - but they do have the monopoly on McDonald’s.
I can’t see how they’d be oversubscribed- their drivers are self employed

I thought service fees were 10% of your order

Schmoana · 24/07/2020 20:09

Do the delivery drivers stay at the take out place or would they have to travel to pick up your food even if only bringing it a mile? That would add to their costs.

Personally I’d walk to pick it up!

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 20:10

@Louiselouie0890 don’t think so (though I may be wrong). I’m also seeing £4 delivery fees though for places that are less than 1 mile away.

Deliveroo and JustEat are both cheaper

Louiselouie0890 · 24/07/2020 20:13

Just checked, at least on mine it's 10% of subtotal for service fees which goes to Uber and then the delivery fee is the drivers fee

Louiselouie0890 · 24/07/2020 20:14

Whereas I'm sure justeat is just a flat 50p service fee then delivery fee

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 20:14

@Schmoana most of the drivers will actually be working for all of the delivery companies I think so will be in and around delivering in the areas

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/07/2020 20:17

Yeah, all those food delivery drivers earning obscene amounts of money! Just awful isn't it?

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 20:21

@Chicchicchicchiclana I very much doubt the delivery drivers are getting the service fees - that would be that wonderful caring company - Uber 🙄

DancingInDespair · 24/07/2020 20:32

I don't use uber eats but will pay on just eat. It's normally an extra £3-4. I'm lazy, that's the price I pay for that!

heartsonacake · 24/07/2020 20:32

Uber Eat Drivers actually make quite a lot of money for their orders.

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 20:38

@DancingInDespair yep I expect to pay around £3 - £4 to use it as a service (plus a driver tip). Over £6 seems excessive when it’s so muc less on justeat

OP posts:
holdmyfrylight · 24/07/2020 20:41

I noticed McDonald's was on justeat the other day. The delivery fee was 50p cheaper.

Craiglang · 24/07/2020 20:44

Less than a mile away?! Confused Just go yourself if you're that concerned about the delivery cost.

(That said, I live rurally where nobody delivers, so that's probably clouded my view. If we want a Chinese we have to drive for 20 minutes each way, McDonald's or the like is much further. I have no idea where the nearest chain pizza place is.)

PumpkinP · 24/07/2020 20:46

Personally I don’t use just eat, I’m amazed anyone does still tbh, around here if you order a Chinese you can wait around 2/3 hours if you order from just eat, that’s the usual amount of time I wait if ordering from the restaurant themselves, whereas Uber eats is the same as going to pick it up which is obviously considerably quicker and for the same Chinese restaurant it’s around half hour wait, honestly I would rather pay the extra! You are paying for the service.

MissConductUS · 24/07/2020 20:49

All of these companies are losing money. They're offering discounts to gain market share but that won't go on forever. Uber is acquiring Postmates and there will be more consolidation.

My solution is to send DH to pick it up. Grin

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 20:53

@PumpkinP interesting. I’ve had more issues with Uber than just eat in terms of ordering. Deliveroo is ok - but pretty crap if something goes wrong.

For those saying I should just walk. For whatever reason I’ve chosen not to. That’s why people choose delivery. They may be on their own with three kids. They may have mobility issues. They may prefer not to be on a crowded takeaway given the current circumstances.

While I don’t fall into any of those categories - many will, and this was just about the delivery service

KilljoysDutch · 24/07/2020 20:53

The same take out using their own drivers charges £4 delivery on Ubereats and £1.50 on Just Eat with a 10% discount on orders of £15 or more pretty much making delivery free. There's more than one take out that does the same.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 24/07/2020 20:58

I’ve noticed that when a restaurant has a cheaper deal/delivery charge via JustEat compared with Uber Eats (which is often), the delivery time estimate is regularly more than double with JE. Does Uber Eats factor in a ‘get it quicker’ cost?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 24/07/2020 20:59

Personally I’d walk to pick it up!

1930s food...

PumpkinP · 24/07/2020 21:14

Weird, where I am isn’t unusual for at least a 2 hour wait when ordering from just eat. I’ve never had any issues with Uber eats and find them quicker and easier to refund if there is an issue unlike just eat.

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 21:29

@StillCoughingandLaughing I find that Uber underestimates the time - but it is usually quicker which is why I usually chose it.

If you want order tracking and faster delivery from UberEats than JustEat (as most people seem to say is benefit of UberEats vs JustEat) then makes sense that service fees and delivery would be more expensive, its like paying for premium next day delivery vs standard delivery when online shopping.

Takeaway is a luxury anyway, delivery companies can charge as much as they like as long as clients are willing to pay it!
