To think that Uber Eat costs are getting ridiculous

Went to order a takeaway. I have all the apps etc but usually use uber eats thanks to the tracking.

For a restaurant less than a mile away - deliver costs and service fees added £6 to a £22 order!
Literally switched the basked over the justeat and costs were £0.50.

Aibu to think that this will really turn people off using it?

@heartsonacake I've since ordered McDonalds from justeat - I did not see wrong.

genteelwoman · 26/07/2020 02:37

I end up using UberEats because they are reliable but expensive with the service charges. I have waited hours for Just Eat orders that never arrived and were a nightmare to get a refund. JustEat used to be great but I just never know if an order will turn up anymore. So I either haul myself off the sofa and go buy it myself (the thought just usually results in me cooking which is ultimately healthier) or I suck it up and just use UberEats

Jinglebellissimo · 26/07/2020 07:37

@simonisnotme my debate isn’t “should I go and get a takeaway myself” is it? My question was - compared to deliveroo and justeat is uber too expensive.

As I said above there are many reasons why people choose delivery over pick up.

@BubblyBarbara yes but that “luxury” - the exact same one - will cost me either £20 via one delivery service or £26 via another - that’s my point.

However it sounds like, in some locations, Uber offers a superior service. Not really the case where I am - they’re all pretty much the same.

Uber eats isn’t cabs going to pick up orders. It’s a separate service of delivery drivers on a bike.

Not here. All Uber eats deliveries are made by taxis.

When I order Just eat, the order is sent to the restaurant and delivered by their own delivery staff. Delivery is nearly always free.

Depends entirely where you live.

2004bestyear · 26/07/2020 07:49

McDonalds is definitely on Just Eat in my area with a £3.50 delivery charge. A little cheaper than Uber's £3.99.

Jinglebellissimo · 26/07/2020 07:57

@WhattheHhashappened I didn’t realise there was such a variance - makes sense though. Just-eat can be the restaurant delivery but usually now they’re “just eat” drivers (you can tell the difference as you can track their drivers - whereas you can’t for a restaurant driver).

As far as I can tell - most of the drivers seem to work for more than one service.

For those who are interested I just looked at Uber eats - it appears drivers get a £1.50 per pick up then £1.50 per drop off - then with a set amount based on mileage. Uber then take 30% of it.

For restaurants they charge the highest commission - up to 35%.

Jinglebellissimo · 26/07/2020 08:05

It’s not clear whether they have passed the increased delivery fee onto the mileage rates for the drivers.

@heartsonacake
McDonald's is available on JustEats.

Splitsunrise · 26/07/2020 09:16

Sorry @heartsonacake looks like you’re the one who’s wrong 😂

I think it makes sense for big towns/cities to have dedicated ‘just eat’ or ‘Uber’ drivers.
In more rural locations/ small towns it’s still up to the restaurant to provide their own driver.
TBH, I prefer to order direct for that reason. The restaurant doesn’t have to hand over money to JE or UE for taking the order.

You’re right, You can’t track them which is a downside.

Jinglebellissimo · 26/07/2020 13:01

@WhattheHhashappened makes sense. Here you see delivery drivers crammed outside everywhere that does delivery (including the small M&S petrol stations etc).

Uber eats uses an uber taxi driver to go collect your food and deliver to your house. Therefore, you pay taxi cost. Ordering via just eat, the shops have their own delivery drivers so delivery cost is much less or usually factored into the food cost if offering free delivery. The 50p service charge on just eat is addition to the delivery charge, if the restaurante charges

Jinglebellissimo · 26/07/2020 13:35

@Laigny that’s not how it works where I am as I’ve outlined above. Food comes on a bike/motorcycle. Delivery drivers work for multiple delivery services.
Appreciate this isn’t what happens everywhere from the comments above.

Here in Melbourne, we are in lockdown 2, so all restaurants are take away only.

They are politely requesting people do not use a delivery company, as they take a cut from the restaurant too. Of course restaurants are struggling to survive so need every dollar.

Something I did not know and we now only pick up.

Shock Shock

GinDaddyRedux · 26/07/2020 14:31

Hmm @Jinglebellissimo not really sure what your point is on this thread. That Uber Eats are too expensive for delivery? And there a competitor that charges less? Great! Go and use that competitor...

....except you said you like the functionality and tracking of Uber. Ok, great! Go and use that one then and pay the £6.

I mean, this isn't rocket science here. You choose and you pay. If fewer people choose Uber then sure they'll suffer, but I don't really care about their already dodgy venture capitalist-backed "get all rivals out of business" model, so I won't cry if they struggle with the takeaway fulfilment business.

And perhaps if they do go under, we'll then know at this stage how much you're prepared to walk less than a mile for some takeaway food. Hmm

Jinglebellissimo · 26/07/2020 15:13

@GinDaddyRedux my question is quite literally in my op - will their costs out people off using them?

Also again - I’ve stated several reasons why people choose delivery rather than walk. You have no idea what anyone’s personal circumstances are and there’s plenty that will preclude them from walking to a takeaway.

Yeh but tbf I don’t think this has been mentioned but Uber eats does do a free delivery promotion that refreshes every 10 minutes (use to be 5) so just order from one of those if the delivery cost is such a problem!

Jinglebellissimo · 26/07/2020 16:57

@PumpkinP our free delivery slots are Almost always grocery stores. Also as in my OP - it was more about them vs the other sites - though now understand a bit more about the variances across areas
