To think that Uber Eat costs are getting ridiculous

Jinglebellissimo · 24/07/2020 19:55

Went to order a takeaway. I have all the apps etc but usually use uber eats thanks to the tracking.

For a restaurant less than a mile away - deliver costs and service fees added £6 to a £22 order!
Literally switched the basked over the justeat and costs were £0.50.

Aibu to think that this will really turn people off using it?

@fluffi I agree and that’s why paid more for Uber. But 50p vs £6 is rather a difference when you’re talking about an order of less than. £25.

@holdmyfrylight

I noticed McDonald's was on justeat the other day. The delivery fee was 50p cheaper.
You saw wrong. McDonalds delivers exclusively with UberEats; you will never find them on JustEat or any other platform.

@StillCoughingandLaughing

I’ve noticed that when a restaurant has a cheaper deal/delivery charge via JustEat compared with Uber Eats (which is often), the delivery time estimate is regularly more than double with JE. Does Uber Eats factor in a ‘get it quicker’ cost?
I think Uber Eats' cost does include a premium for quicker delivery (like-for-like takeaways) and also the DPD style real-time tracking.

Has anyone else today (Friday) struggled to place an order on Uber Eats. I completed my basket and when I pressed the 'place order' button, nothing happened. I tried a different web browser and the place order button was greyed out. Tried clearing cookies / cache etc but to no avail. It was working perfectly fine for me just 5 days ago.

Flowers009 · 25/07/2020 02:49

I deleted them because of this also the drivers have stolen food before

Pixxie7 · 25/07/2020 04:16

We only have just eat here so no choice.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/07/2020 06:36

Sending a taxi to get you a takeaway is never going to be cheap. It's not just the distance, but the faffing around at the restaurant.

I'd be surprised if the driver can do more than 2-4 jobs like this an hour and that's if the timings and orders work efficiently, so that's a maximum of £24 in delivery charges and they have to run a car and pay Uber before they make any money themselves. Most will be lucky to clear NMW and will need to work long unsociable hours too.

The problem with all the delivery services is that the costs don't really stack up unless it is run massively efficiently which you can't always do with orders coming in at different times from different places, and as illustrated in the OP, the customer is reluctant to pay the full cost of the service provided.

Uber, just eat, Deliveroo make money by charging both the restaurant and the customer, so while the restaurant gets orders, it is often not worthwhile to them to fulfill them, because of the commission taken by the delivery company.

CardsforKittens · 25/07/2020 07:18

The one time I tried UberEats instead of JustEat, the delivery charge was twice as much for half the distance. No more McDonalds for me! (Probably just as well.)

Jinglebellissimo · 25/07/2020 07:39

@BarbaraofSeville Uber eats isn’t cabs going to pick up orders. It’s a separate service of delivery drivers on a bike.
I believe that they often take more than one delivery at a time.

That said - you’re probably right in that they can only take so many orders within an hour.

@PumpkinP

Personally I don’t use just eat, I’m amazed anyone does still tbh, around here if you order a Chinese you can wait around 2/3 hours if you order from just eat, that’s the usual amount of time I wait if ordering from the restaurant themselves, whereas Uber eats is the same as going to pick it up which is obviously considerably quicker and for the same Chinese restaurant it’s around half hour wait, honestly I would rather pay the extra! You are paying for the service.
Uber eats isn't available in a lot of areas yet. We only live a 10 min drive from our local city centre and can't get either Uber eats or deliveroo. Our old house was even closer and still couldn't get it. They tend to only deliver in a tiny radius in our area so we have no other option but to use just eat or direct from takeaway
Jinglebellissimo · 25/07/2020 08:22

Saying all that - I do rather fancy a McDonalds breakfast so hello Uber

okiedokieme · 25/07/2020 08:29

@heartsonacake

Actually McDonald's is available on other local platforms like concierge services, our local one will fetch most things for £3-5 fee, even go to primark for you, it's great

okiedokieme · 25/07/2020 08:30

@GreytExpectations

They aren't where I moved to either, there's only 9 on just eatConfused vs 250 at my old house. How will I cope Grin

Dizzywizz · 25/07/2020 10:15

Can I ask, what’s better about ordering through these platforms for your local Chinese/Indian etc , rather than just ordering direct from the takeaway?

Jinglebellissimo · 25/07/2020 10:25

@Dizzywizz many of them are places that don’t have their own delivery drivers. Most of the platforms will track your order and payment is direct through the app so need for cash etc.

I do get that it is a service but I prefer to tip the drivers than pay service fees and super high delivery costs.

Most on just eat don't have their own delivery service.

A lot don't have their own website. Also it stores your card and address details so saves a lot of faff.

Just eat in my town has about 200 takeaways. Uber about 7 which includes macs, Costa and an alcohol delivery service.

Round here you would have to call them and I would rather not, I prefer to order online.

Stopped using Uber eats after they accused me of lying about missing an item. The local restaurants here also add a 10-20% mark up on menu prices on Uber.

simonisnotme · 25/07/2020 17:28

go fetch it yourself then

melj1213 · 25/07/2020 17:36

Yep, the delivery fee for my local McDonalds is £3.99 because "It looks like you're a bit far away" despite the fact the restaurant is 600m away from my flat and the local KFC, which is twice as far away, has a delivery charge of £1.49

They are clearly using their exclusive partnership to bump up the delivery bc they know you can't get delivery through anywhere else.

BubblyBarbara · 25/07/2020 19:41

A takeaway is a Luxury, get over it costing like a Luxury, and if you can’t then cook your own dinner no delivery fee from your own kitchen x
