To not want to go abroad without kids in current climate?

DH and I had planned to go away this summer for a few nights (kid free) for his 40th, but due to the current situation with COVID, I said I would much prefer we celebrate somewhere in this country. He still really wants to go abroad. AIBU to not want to risk going abroad without the kids right now?

For context the two locations we were looking at were Ibiza or Marbella.

I am getting ready to go to Spain, with children, we are still unsure if DH will join us due to the potential withdrawal of air bridges. I can wfh but he can’t, and having only just reopened after forced closure, we are concerned he may have to quarantine.

I would not travel without the children in case we got stuck.

I wouldn't travel without children at the moment. I would be concerned that we couldn't get back.

Yes that is my concern, getting stuck/having to quarantine on the return, doesn’t seem worth the risk at the moment when there’s lovely places in this country we could go instead. Understand he’s disappointed as he’s only 40 once but could possibly postpone until next year.

I'm in another country in Europe and I don't want to go abroad anywhere either even though I would travel by car if I was going to go. The rules are changing all the time. Just this week they have announced a 14 day quarantine on returning from certain countries effective from today. A negative test has to be presented on entry to this country but that does not exempt people from the quarantine!
No way I am going anywhere when things can change within a week. I haven't got children but I have cats..... wouldn't risk not being able to get back to the cats if a lockdown occurred in a holiday destination and although I wfh, a quarantine would make things difficult.

If I had children and lived in the UK there's absolutely no way I would travel abroad - as I said, anything can happen and you could get stuck somewhere. It's DH's 40th so he can choose whether he goes away kid-free in the UK somewhere now or he waits and goes abroad at some point in the future when things have settled down.

Don't do it, you won't enjoy it as you'll be worrying. He'll get over it (didn't get a holiday for my fortieth!!)

DH and I went abroad for 3 days last week without DS15. I was actually hoping for quarantine as it would have done me a favour!

I despite being abroad in holiday right now, I think I'd struggle to go away without children right now in case I couldn't return okay.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 24/07/2020 21:21

I wouldn't want to be in a different country from my children right now - id happily go abroad with them, but not without.

IAintentDead · 24/07/2020 21:26

I would definitely go.

I think Spain is looking close to us having to quarantine when we come back again. I'd pick a country with much lower new infections to make it less likely that you'd end up in lockdown or quarantine when you come back.

Or just use the budget to stay somewhere super swanky in UK.

Thanks for the replies so far. Glad I’m not being totally unreasonable.

I would go.

Looks like Spain is going on the quarantine list so that’s decision made I think!
