To think unless you are actually medically exempt you can't get out of wearing a mask?

People on social media are telling others to download a basic picture of text saying "I am exempt from wearing a mask" to present at supermarkets if they don't want to wear a mask.

Not medically exempt, no hidden disabilities, just for those don't want to wear one.

Surely that crap isn't going to work?

Well, how’s it not going to work? The supermarkets can’t prove they aren’t exempt.

sadpapercourtesan · 24/07/2020 17:40

Of course it is going to work. How would it not?

Iggii · 24/07/2020 17:40

There will always be stupid, selfish people. In this case, as well as spreading their germs they make it harder for those people with genuine issues re make wearing.
You can easily get out of mask wearing by staying indoors.

Simsie · 24/07/2020 17:40

The whole thing is floored then.

I was hoping those who are exempt would be provided something legitimate from their GP.

Any idiot can print off a bit of paper and as I've seen today many intend to.

Do supermarkets have to let anyone in? I mean if they decided to insist on mask wearing, no exceptions, could they do that?

daisypond · 24/07/2020 17:41

Well, yes, it is going to work, sadly.

Iggii · 24/07/2020 17:41

I saw one person in a large supermarket this week (Scotland) not wearing a mask. Most people will conform.

Simsie · 24/07/2020 17:42

Yes they can.

A shop near me refused entry to people without masks today.

Flawed* rather

They might well find themselves on the end of a disability discrimination lawsuit if the person turned away had a legitimate reason they couldn’t wear a mask.

Simsie · 24/07/2020 17:46

Yes quite.

That's partly why I assumed those medically exempt would be provided with something which proves their exemption.

It's stuff like this that will end up resulting in laws and fines. You can't trust people to do the right thing and it will end up spoiling it for everyone. Just like with lock down.

Of course they have to let people in without masks if they say they are exempt, if they don't they could find themselves facing charges of disability discrimination.
Jaxhog · 24/07/2020 17:49

Exempt people will have a letter saying they're exempt. No letter, you have to wear a mask. I gather the police will be doing spot checks and on-the-spot fines.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/07/2020 17:49

I assumed it would be something from a medical professional, if anyone can download then people will take advantage, plenty of people seem opposed to being told to do something. Even when that something protects others.

Simsie · 24/07/2020 17:49

Gullivers resort had to revise their policy after turning away an autistic child who wasn't wearing a mask, but was exempt from needing to.

I'm a SN parent myself and thought the treatment that family received was blatant discrimination.

People who are exempt should be provided with government or GP issued exemption certificates/cards.

The chancers drafting something up on Microsoft paint for no reason other than not wanting to conform should be fined.

That's simply not true. People who are exempt will not be provided with any letters or doctors notes.

That is encouraging to hear.

See how far these anti authoritarians get with their poxy print offs if that's the case.

That’s the point of the thread. Non-exempt people are just printing out a letter themselves.
kwest · 24/07/2020 17:52

@jaxhog you can just go onto the gov.uk website and anyone, with no medical evidence whatsoever, can screenshot/download a “I’m exempt from wearing a face mask” certificate . More well thought out advice from the govt.

covetingthepreciousthings · 24/07/2020 17:52

Exempt people will have a letter saying they're exempt.

This isn't true.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/07/2020 17:53

Retail staff have been told they don't have to police customers anyway so they won't even have to ask people why they aren't wearing a mask unless they decide to as store policy.

kwest · 24/07/2020 17:53

Cross posted with @daisypond !!

covetingthepreciousthings · 24/07/2020 17:53

Sorry what I mean by it not being true, is precisely the point of the thread, anyone can print off an exemption letter / badge. It's not official.

EggysMom · 24/07/2020 17:53

No they won't, not according to the guidance. They can simply claim exemption and not have to prove the excuse they are using.
