Crisps and dips - AIBU to think you dip then eat whole crisp, not take a bite and then dip again with same crisp?

As above - AIBU to think etiquette is or should be to take a crisp, dip into dip and then eat the whole crisp, rather than taking a bite of crisp and then dipping the same crisp in shared dip?

@AliceinBunnyland

Interesting many of these posts are saying no double dipping as I know more people who would double dip than who don't!

I don't do it but most of my friends would.

Do you think it's something lots of people do without thinking maybe?

Strangers no. Friends and family yes.

No! See this is the issue. If I'm out with three friends, I don't want to share saliva with them. What if you're out with the friends? If I'm at home with 10-15 family members for a barbecue party I don't want to share saliva with them either. What's the point limiting to friends and family if you're going to share with that many people?!

Undies1990 · 24/07/2020 15:47

I don't mind my DH double dipping.

Other people; no, no, no

Hollyhead · 24/07/2020 15:47

Double dipping fine with DH and possibly kids. Or spoon to your own separate plate.

Interim with other close family or friends is to dip and bite one end and then redip the end you’ve not bitten - more for vegetable sticks rather than crisps.

Print one of these for the table, and a big poster like pic 2. Gross.

So the dips weren’t socially distancing and you ate Covid soup. Ewwww.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 24/07/2020 16:00

Double dipping is starting to get a different meaning the more I read it! Wink

And it is vile. Even at home. I kiss my husband but it doesn't mean I want him to lick my plate!

From a Harvard University Health Centre Blog

a 2009 study performed at Clemson University and published in the Journal of Food Safety, entitled “Effect of biting before dipping (double-dipping) chips on the bacterial population of the dipping solution.” The title alone may be enough to make you lose your appetite.

The researchers carefully analyzed bacterial contamination before and after a person double dips. Here’s what they found:

Bacterial counts in the dip increased significantly after a person took a bite from a chip and then dipped again.
The number of bacteria contaminating the dip varied depending on the dip – salsa had more bacteria after double-dipping compared with chocolate or cheese dips (perhaps due to differences in thickness and acidity of the dips).
Similar findings were noted when bacteria counts were measured after a bitten chip was dipped in water.

BacklashStarts · 24/07/2020 16:03

I have taught my kids ‘one dip per chip’ and they chant it if any of us forget!

FudgeBrownie2019 · 24/07/2020 16:04

We have little bowls that clip onto the side of plates so that people who want to double-dip can do so without me needing to stare aggressively at them for their muckery.

DarkDarkNight · 24/07/2020 16:04

Came here to show the George Costanza pic but I’ve been beaten to it Grin

SueEllenMishke · 24/07/2020 16:06

I only came in to share the George Costanza clip 😂

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 24/07/2020 16:07

No double dipping. Not even the people who think turning the crisp/breadstick round to pick up the dip with the other end that they held. Because they get their own oral bacteria etc. on the crisp/breadstick and put that into the dip and continue that by picking up more crisps etc.

Fleamaker123 · 24/07/2020 16:09

I wouldn't be partaking in any kind of communal dipping.
I hate buffets too where people would cough/sneeze/breathe over open food. Gross.
I think decanting the dip onto your plate is the way forward.

BreconBeBuggered · 24/07/2020 16:21

Dips on the plate. Or (my personal preference) have your very own dip and stab any would-be intruders with a fork.
No dipping crisps, though. Come on. The crisp is a perfect foodstuff. It doesn't require embellishment.

Thislittlelady · 24/07/2020 16:22

This is quite interesting actually....I watched an episode of myth busters ( an I allowed to name ?) and they were dealing with the double dip, sharing germs things. And not to be too gross, if I remember correctly , you’d have to lick the entire dip to even transfer anything.... however personally, I don’t like it. Maybe with my dh and maybe The kids but no one else. Especially in COVID times..

AhBallix · 24/07/2020 16:22

Bleurgh! Double dipping is just wrong. Except when I have the whole dip to myself - then I can do whatever the hell I like.

When we're having dips with dinner (fake Mexican) we just spoon a bit out on our own plates and dip the tortillas.

When we're sharing a big bag of crisps, DP has been known to lick his fingers and stick them back in the bag. I don't care if we created two children together, I don't want his slobbers on my posh crisps. I pour some into a bowl and let him snuffle away with the bag to his heart's content.

Thislittlelady · 24/07/2020 16:23

AcrossthePond55 · 24/07/2020 16:34

Double dipping is a crime against humanity!

DH and I have been known to dip then 'flip the chip' so the 'bitten end' doesn't touch the dip then double dip, but ONLY with each other.

Now I want chips n dip.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/07/2020 16:36

@AhBallix

That is grounds for a divorce murder. I've never heard of such unreasonable behaviour!!

Jaxhog · 24/07/2020 16:38

Just gross at any time (unless you're the only one dipping). Under Covid it's double gross. I'd have a quiet word before someone else tells them publically.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/07/2020 16:41

If it's just DH and I then I don't see the problem but anyone else, yuck!

Crafting1Queen · 24/07/2020 16:43

Double dipping - Boak!

No, No and thrice No! Unless you are eating it by yourself of course (it's also a good way to ensure no one else then wants any if you get in there first - apparently, according to a Friend.....)

Tana433 · 24/07/2020 16:43

No double dipping unless the dip bowl is for your use exclusively. Anything else is gross even if it is family.

SerenityNowwwww · 24/07/2020 16:46

If you break it on half that’s acceptable. Double dipping is not acceptable.

Unless it’s me and a large bag of Doritos and a dip (no one else gets a look in).
