Why am I so dumb!

My sister is getting married. I jumped in to get my mum a dress. I ordered one and it came from another country. Just received an invoice to say duty, vat etc payment is £29.63 and I need to pay.

I did make the payment. Dressed turned out crap so I lost £80 all together. Told my sister and all she could say was oh that's not good.

Why am I so dumb? I always do this though. Any special occassion and I jump to buy something for my mum. Or buy gifts for family members. (Birthday , celebrations) but no one does it for me.

Anyone one else like me?

I find it hard enough to choose clothes for myself online which I'll like and which will fit and suit me. I can't imagine why you'd think it would be sensible do it for someone else when they hadn't even asked you to, especially something you couldn't easily return!

What's your sister supposed to do about you diving in head first and making a mistake? Did you expect her to pay for the dress?

I’m sorry OP but you sound like my MIL! Every occasion she buys me outfits but they’re never my taste! She is very controlling. I get anxiety telling her I want to chose my own outfits for weddings etc. She has calmed down massively and when I got DH to speak to her in the beginning she would cry and say she does it as she’s me as a daughter but why don’t I see her as a mother?

I think your intentions are lovely but you probably make people feel that you think they are incapable of choosing nice stuff for themselves and that only you have taste and they don’t

If I was you I would stop this as you will turn into my MIL. She would pick DH outfits even underwear till he met me at age 29!

I remember she once went through clothes people had bought for the birth of my first child and she made a pile of all the clothes she hated and told me if there’s gift receipts she’s gonna take them to store and return, if no receipt she will donate to charity shop!

Clothes are very personal something you love others will hate. Please stop this now it’s very controlling and not necessary

Why didn’t your mum buy her own dress?

Slimeafterslime · 24/07/2020 16:35

Don't be so bloody stupid in future then? Why should your sister pay when its you who has thrown their own money away?!

Pisces3211 · 24/07/2020 16:37

OP can I ask you something if you don’t mind? - are you the eldest in the family? I’m just curious.
