To wonder how / why I have developed a black eye this afternoon!

That’s it really.

Had lunch with DH and DCs - no black eye.

An hour later I was really shocked to see a bit of a shiner starting to develop under one eye. Along the dark circle line. Haven’t bumped it or knocked it. Nothing like that. A few hours later and it has grown and really purple. Not at all sore or tender.

Am feeling very confused and incredibly self-conscious.

Hi

That's strange, I had a quick Google and this what I found:

It's unusual for a black eye to develop unexpectedly, when there hasn't been an injury, but a possible explanation is high blood pressure causing a capillary to burst, or one of the conditions listed below.

More info here:

www.your.md/condition/black-eye

Hope it goes away soon!

Bemorechicken · 23/07/2020 20:40

You've burst a blood vessel by the sounds it. Take your blood pressure at boots or GP -have you banged your head at all -or your face even yesterday or in your sleep?

GlowStickWoman · 23/07/2020 20:48

Thanks for your replies. I didn’t dare google it!!!

No idea about my blood pressure but I’ve developed really bad PMT tonight. God if it’s not one thing ...

Do you have allergies?

GlowStickWoman · 23/07/2020 20:49

Not that I’m aware of but I am quite phlegmy!

I've had this, no reason for a black eye. It was chalazion (spl)?
The surround of my eye swelled alarmingly, and then it bruised, I guess from the swelling. I got something from the dr but I dont remember what.

Worldgonecrazy · 23/07/2020 21:01

I would get it checked. It could be a serious internal bleed. I’m not trying to scare you but it’s something I recall from a first aid course I did many years ago.

TheSpottedZebra · 23/07/2020 21:02

Sinusitis?

TheSpottedZebra · 23/07/2020 21:05

If you're phlegmy, it probably IS related to that. Are you always phlegmy, or are you extra phlegmy?
I've never written phlegmy so much!

This post has been bought to you in association with the word PHLEGMY

Shannith · 23/07/2020 21:09

@TheSpottedZebra Grin

But OP burst blood vessel because of high blood pressure could be it. Worth a call to 111 rather than google or (admittedly funny) strangers on the internet.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/07/2020 21:09

That's so weird, I had exactly this last week! It went away in a couple of days.

GlowStickWoman · 23/07/2020 21:10

Zebra 🤣🤣🤣

I have been phlegmy for a few years now. I’m sometimes asked if I’m a smoker! (I’m not).

Greebols I’m hoping it’s nothing...

But I’ll see if I can get my BP checked tomorrow. Probably sensible.

Have you banged your nose in the last day or two?

I hit myself in the schnozzle with a cupboard door a few years ago, and a couple of days later I had a black eye. It's a good job DP remembered my drunkeness clumsiness, or I'd have been quite concerned.

Nicketynac · 23/07/2020 21:38

Oddly my BIL developed two black eyes yesterday. Not the entire socket, but two very obvious bruises underneath the eyes. He also had D&V (the bruises appeared suddenly after just one bout of vomiting) and ended up getting admitted to hospital overnight for tests and fluids - assume they were worried about his blood clotting. Blood tests came back normal except he was dehydrated and his stools were positive for campylobacter.
The bruises look better today and he has been allowed home. They couldn't explain the bruises - suggested dehydration or an allergic reaction but were mainly happy they seemed to be going away.

longtompot · 23/07/2020 21:46

Kris from Coppafeel posted on instagram about this happening to her over night, with no injury. I haven't seen if she has found out what has happened.

Llamazoom · 23/07/2020 21:57

It could be your sinuses! My DP has to have a nose job and his sinuses tweaked after his nose got broken when he was young, the first sign was slightly swollen eyes followed by 2 lovely shiners that seemed to appear overnight. It reoccurred every couple of months. He looked like a thug. Definitely get it looked into.

DonLewis · 23/07/2020 22:04

In educated, the memoir by Tara Westover, the mom developed 2 black eyes. The result of a fractured skull. Have you banged your head at all?

GlowStickWoman · 23/07/2020 22:18

No bangs or bumps.

Thanks for your responses.
