Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

There was one condition she knew she had, one that is preventable, one that is guaranteed to cause distress to small children

Give over. She didn't know it was going to be that bad. It hadn't been before. She doesn't get it every time she flies and she had no reason to expect it to be this bad based on previous experience. But you do you...

Willow2017 · 23/07/2020 19:51

@Drivingdownthe101

This is why I am not going on holiday until all this madness passes. It's not because of a vomiting passenger, but because of the self appointed Covid police who are on the hunt for someone to kick when they are down

This. Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves. Vile vile people.

This. Never seen so much enthusiasm for piling onto a poster who needs a bit of support. This fucking virus has apparently given so many people a god complex and they feel free (and annonymous enough) online to bully and insult people to the nth degree that they would never dare do to anyone in person. Are they also teaching their children that they are judge and jury over everyone else?

People are falling over each other to be fully paid up membets of the Covid Police. Hope you have all read Bojos latest on mask wearing. 'DO NOT report people for not wearing a mask" wtf will all those desperate to 'name and shame', pass commrnts on someone who doesnt wear one for their own personal reasons and 'call the police' do now?

If she had a compelling reason to travel she should state it,
It's nobody's business why she was travelling. Christ on a bike people are allowed to travel without the permission of internet randoms or thier approval whether it was necessary or not!

Bless you OP! I am the same with migraines they can come on all of a sudden and then that’s it for hours on end. I don’t think you’re wrong and I think there’s a lot of people on high alert and all common sense leaves them. I think for the crew it’s so high pressured at the moment that they’ve done what they’ve had to but i would again expect common sense.

@Rhine who do you think you are questioning someone you don’t know, on how genuine the frequency of THEIR travel sickness is? it’s not always clear cut. I bet you’re going to be one of those people giving grief out to those who are genuinely exempt from wearing a mask come tomorrow.

Theluggage15 · 23/07/2020 19:53

Some ridiculous comments on here. Sorry you had such a horrible flight. Many people are exempt from wearing masks so if the people moaning can’t cope with someone not wearing a mask maybe you should stay at home.

And all this pious ‘I wear a mask because I care about others’, get over yourself, it’s so tedious.

GreytExpectations · 23/07/2020 19:54

Typical mumsnet missing the point as always. Nobody is saying she should have vomited in her mask, even the air stewards weren't saying that. It's in between her being sick that she should have put it back on. She clearly kept it off the majority of the flight

TinyButton · 23/07/2020 19:55

So you took your mask off and you came running to a forum to seek validation from a bunch of strangers on whether you did a good thing or a bad thing. Who gives a shit, what a bloody waste of life. Yours for posting and mine for reading.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 23/07/2020 19:55

@SockYarn

Oh sorry, have I missed the expressions of concern and sympathy for the fellow passengers who got exposed to whatever was aerosolised throughout the cabin twenty times?

Since when was travel sickness contagious? Hmm

How does op know it was travel sickness?

How does she know she doesn't have an infection, including Covid, instead of or as well as travel sickness?

pennylane83 · 23/07/2020 19:56

You can't take your mask off during a pandemic. You knew this was a possibility

Except if your at the gym, pub, restaurant, cafe, school, in the office, actually working in a shop..... the list is endless.

Midwife1997 · 23/07/2020 19:56

Get a grip. You do sound a bit precious and ridiculous.

yeOldeTrout · 23/07/2020 19:57

How else is wondering if OP spread norovirus around...

sorry you had such a rough trip, OP. Hope you can obliterate the memory for a few yrs & then learn to laugh about it.

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 19:58

Laughable isn’t it @pennylane83

TheFirstRuleOfAIBUClub · 23/07/2020 19:59

God there are some deeply unpleasant people on here at the moment.

TheFirstRuleOfAIBUClub · 23/07/2020 20:02

All the people saying YABU, do you believe people shouldn't be allowed to drink or eat on planes? Obviously masks have to be removed for that.

The lack of logic, apart from the distinct lack of kindness, is staggering.

PumpkinPie2016 · 23/07/2020 20:05

I think you've had some really harsh replies here OP. You are not routinely travel sick, it was unfortunate that you happened to be so sick today. You could have just as easily ended up being sick due to food poisoning that only surfaced once in the air!

You can't wear a mask when vomiting like that.

I'm not normally car sick but last year when we set off back from Cornwall at 5am, DH had to pull over because I was really sick. No idea what brought it on but it can't be helped.

I hope you're ok now Flowers

Mamabear12 · 23/07/2020 20:06

Seriously, if you know you get travel sick sometimes, don’t travel during a pandemic!!! Or take some freaking pills. Geez. My two kids sometimes feel sick when we travel. They have not actually been sick. But I bring everything to make sure they don’t feel sick. Water, lollipops, etc. Don’t feed them so much before travel. Just bead w peanut butter or banana and cereal. Simple food. Why wouldn’t you bring pills to be safe??

bookworm14 · 23/07/2020 20:06

This thread reminds me of the early days of lockdown when the self-appointed Covid police were waiting to leap on anyone who dared to leave the house twice in one day. Now that they can’t curtain-twitch anymore, masks are the focus of their self-righteous moralising.

And yes, I do wear a mask myself before anyone asks.

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 20:08

It’s so depressing.

Hoggleludo · 23/07/2020 20:10

I don't get it

Why if you were vomiting we're the air staff asking you to keep your mask on??

SecretSpAD · 23/07/2020 20:18

I want to do a study into how much the population behaving like arseholes has increased due to Covid. Based on this thread I'm going upwards of 60% minimum

This.

Oh to be as perfect as some of the people on this thread.....

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 20:21

The ironic thing is, I’m not anti mask and I wear one I’m just anti arsehole and anti hysteria.

SecretSpAD · 23/07/2020 20:26

My issue with op isn't particularly about the mask. It's about her vomiting twenty times which is an aerosolising process, something that could have been avoided by taking some medication. If she had Covid she has put every other passenger on the plane in risk and I don't think that's acceptable.

Oh god OP, how dare you be so selfish and entitled as to not have the foresight to know you would get travel sick when you don't usually, therefore not have the foresight to take pills and then decide to vomit. We all know that vomiting copiously is just a fab way to pass the time on a flight. Anyone would think that you either enjoy it so much that you couldn't bear to miss this opportunity or you didn't know it was going to happen.

Fucks sake.

SockYarn · 23/07/2020 20:27

What you should have done OP was sit there in a pool of your own vomit. Wearing a mask. Because your illness and discomfort doesn't matter. All that matters is Covid. Hmm

SantaClaritaDiet · 23/07/2020 20:28

Seriously, if you know you get travel sick sometimes, don’t travel during a pandemic!!!

same if you know you get D&V sometimes
a cold sometimes
chest infection sometimes
or any other ailment really. Do not travel!

🤦

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 20:29

Didn’t you know it’s become the ONLY thing you can get sick with and die from @SockYarn

PablosHoney · 23/07/2020 20:29

And don’t even think of travelling as a single mother.
