To find it weird people Zoom from their bed?

AliceinBunnyland · 23/07/2020 01:10

I have been on a number of Zoom calls, mostly work related, but also with friends and groups I'm part of.

With work, most people seem to dial in from a desk or table. Sometimes even the garden.

On the others I've seen people propped up on their bed, which includes in a work quiz and a group meeting where I hadn't "met" or spoken to a few of the other people before. If it was just friends I'd find it less strange.

Not a big deal and not having a go, just interested.

I think working from home has meant that many of us see into one another's homes when we wouldn't usually.

Multiple people in the house all working from home. Need a quiet place to work and bedroom is only place they can make it work if partner/housemate is working in the other room

IncrediblySadToo · 23/07/2020 01:22

I hardly think it's surprising when lots if people are WFH & kids are home too. Lots of people of working age also rent a room or are in a flat share where they can't work in communal areas...

LonginesPrime · 23/07/2020 01:36

Provided there's no-one sleeping next to them and they've not left underwear strewn about the place, it's no different from a sofa, really.

ChavvySexPond · 23/07/2020 01:39

My laptop is either on my dressing table or kitchen work top. I only get the office when my husband doesn't need it. (I'm flexible, he has hours.)

At one point I locked myself in the bathroom to try and get some peace on a call.

Also, not everyone has a house. Lots of people still live with parents or in a house share and their only space is their room, and maybe the only place to sit down is the bed.

One of my colleagues has a one bed flat with her husband. They take it in turns who works in the bedroom or the living room because unless they want to sit in the bath or stand up in the kitchen those are the only two choices

tabulahrasa · 23/07/2020 01:43

My bedroom is often the only room I can be on it - and I have nothing else to sit on in there...I can sit up for a bit, but I’ve no support so it kills my back, so I’m often sort of propped up on my bed.

Gingerkittykat · 23/07/2020 02:17

I had a video interview a couple of weeks ago where the interviewer was sat on her bed with the bedframe visible. I had spent ages moving knick-knacks and rearranging furniture to make sure my background was neutral!

famousforwrongreason · 23/07/2020 03:28

Haha, recent zoom work meeting where a participant said she had to remain off camera due to bandwidth issues.
Cue her camera accidentally turning on and exposing her in bed.
I have zoomed from bed too. I have disabilities and chronic pain as well as fatigue.
I set my bed up to look like a sofa with big cushions and carefully angled the camera, it worked a treat.

ItWasNotOK · 23/07/2020 03:33

Not everyone has a big house with space for a desk.

madwoman1ntheattic · 23/07/2020 03:57

I do find it disconcerting. Dh and I do competitive zoom call telling from each end of the dining room and the kids are all zooming from their bedrooms, but they mostly use desks. I have ‘met’ with people whose unmade beds are visible and I find it odd that they are so chilled about it. Probably me being uptight 🤷‍♀️

RedRumTheHorse · 23/07/2020 04:32

If you have been watching the news for the last few months you can see people don't care in their bathrooms and cars. Having talked to colleagues and friends who have had to do similar at least bedrooms tend to have less of an echo and bird song.

BikeRunSki · 23/07/2020 04:59

Often, my bedroom is the only vaguely quiet place in the house. We don’t have an office/study/spare room/dining room. We do have 2 children at home and 2 adults wfh. Dh’s working space is a corner or our bedroom, mine is a corner of our living room, but you have to walk through the living room together to the kitchen, so it’s a bit if a motorway at times. I go to the bedroom if I need to Zoom in peace.

NotVeryOldForASweatyBird · 23/07/2020 05:04

We live in an apartment with no study or spare room. The only decent place to work is the dining table. When both of us are WFH at the same time, one of us has to be in the bedroom. Sure, I'd always ensure the bed was made and room was tidy if on a videocall - but there's not much we can actually do about the lack of a study or spare room - we didn't foresee this whole pandemic/WFH scenario when we chose where to live.

HandbagDog · 23/07/2020 05:22

Our house purchase fell through in March and we spent lockdown in a beautiful but tiny AirBnb where the bedrooms were literally only big enough for a bed and wardrobe, and the only ‘desk’ was a small round four-seater kitchen table, which we took it in turns to use, along with our homeschooling 8 yr old. I quite often Zoomed sitting on a bed.

Katkincake · 23/07/2020 06:36

I zoomed from my spare bed yesterday as DH was also on a zoom call in the office we share. It was OK when we were home schooling as I worked mornings & DH afternoons, now DS is in holiday club we’re clashing on calls but we move house in a few weeks so I can’t be bothered to move my desk. I explained to the meeting and then turned the camera off for the call, was quite nice lounging as I participated, made a change from my desk Grin

Palavah · 23/07/2020 06:46

For work: on bed ok, in bed not.

MinnieMountain · 23/07/2020 07:13

I've done school governors' meetings from my bed as the only room where I can guarantee being alone.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 23/07/2020 07:22

I did my videos for my class from my bed! My bedroom has the most flattering lighting and is not full of junk! All they could see was my face though so I don't think it really made a difference!

peonypower · 23/07/2020 07:23

I had to do one with our entire executive team from my bed the other day as downstairs is all open plan and it was evening. I can't order everyone else out of the house/to be quiet in their rooms just because my work demands daft hours.

WFH is shit.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 23/07/2020 07:28

I find Zoom meetings from the bath the most awkward - but strangely addictive.

There's the risk of exposing bits you don't mean to and the constant excitement / fear that the power supply will fall into the bath.

Top tip: always keep a couple of flannels handy for emergency cover-ups if the bubbles disappear. Smile

LLLovemydoggies · 23/07/2020 07:42

Gingerkittykat

You can usually change the background. When I was interviewing, I did that, rather than frantically tidying up.

LLLovemydoggies · 23/07/2020 07:43

Gingerkittykat, that wasn't a dig, by the way, and that wasn't to say that you were frantically tidying Smile

Yester · 23/07/2020 07:45

5 of us in the house. Only 4 desks.

silverbranch · 23/07/2020 07:59

My husband has worked from our bedroom since March. We have a small house and I’ve been homeschooling two young children downstairs, which is open plan. We have no spare rooms and our bedroom isn’t big enough for a desk (or even a chest of drawers), so he’s has to work from the bed.

AliceinBunnyland · 23/07/2020 08:50

I do understand it is tough to even WFH when you have limited space and maybe a few of you requiring a place to work.

Some people I work with turn their video off every time we have team meetings and maybe this is why, though the person Im thinking of has just got her own flat. I know some people don't like being on video at all. Another sits at a desk but the room is always so dark, I have found it quite strange.

We are all in a strange situation though.

😲 Do you do this?

With friends / family or work calls?!

Cue her camera accidentally turning on and exposing her in bed.

Me too.

I do this 2 bed flat, desk in lounge where other half does his work.
I get bedroom where I usually study (sat in bed with books around) and do zoom calls for university or work.
Not sure what else people can do when working from home. All people can see is a bit of metal headboard and picture behind.
Not everyone has space for multiple desks and monitors.
