It’s a parking one at work!!

So, I work part time as a cleaner. I drive a new car. I do 4 hours. Everyone else works 7-7 shifts. I’m out by 11am.

I have been told by the managing director that I must park my car at the front of double bays, not at the rear and always facing forward to avoid doors clashing and using reverse gear.
There are 200 spaces and only 20 cars on site at anyone time.
There is no signage to say forward parking only.
Nothing in my contract to say there are parking rules.
Not site specific rules anywhere.
I parked in space A facing forward to drive straight out - in front of me was a night shift car which would be leaving 15 mins after I arrive. I admit I like to park in the first space with a gap either side of me.
Apparently I can only park in spaces BCDEFG etc. Or I can reverse park into a space up at the fence. I do not like these as 1) they are disability spaces 2) they have overhanging trees which loose branches in the wind onto cars parked there.
I could have parked in space E this morning - but cars in D and F have made the space tight and I didn’t want to ding their doors or have them ding mine when there was zero need.
The manager director couldn’t give me a reason as to why I had to park like this other than to avoid using reverse gear - which I would have had to use to get into a fence space - or to get out of one. But apparently that was fine........
When I said he was bonkers - he said the gatehouse will report my car in the morning- I said fine nice to know security will keep an eye on my car! (Security have said they really couldn’t care less!)
There is no reason that is covid related that I can think of, as it is better for cars to be spread out to avoid people accidentally touching each other’s cars rather than parked like sardines. Especially when the majority of people arrive and leave together.
I’m so tempted to park across two spaces tomorrow facing the right way on the right side just to see him get even more annoyed.
FWIW - there are only two female drivers on site the rest are all men - if that makes any difference! Plus my car is the only bright yellow one in a sea of black or white cars.
Anyone have any ideas as to his reasoning before I do park it large???

I have NOT been sacked.

I know you haven’t been sacked. I was responding to the comment quoted above mine.

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 17:08

@Alsohuman

Sorry. I misread my own thread. (Slaps hands away from phone).

He’s the boss. It’s his car park. He can tell you to park however he wants to.

RubyThursday17 · 22/07/2020 17:14

Hi,
I had this on a large site. We were advised that in the case of an emergency the site can cleared of vehicles quickly with less risk

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 17:19

@RubyThursday17

How does that work when you have to leave the building without collecting your belongings - and you aren’t allowed to Carey keys etc into the warehouse ? Everything must be left in the canteen.

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 22/07/2020 17:24

Can you imagine what an employment tribunal would make of sacking someone because you didn’t like their parking?

It would be consistently failing to follow instructions.

The OP was told how she must park. If she continued to park against these instructions she could be given a verbal warning. Continuing would result in written warnings etc. It doesn’t matter why the rules are there, she is an employee and she is not carrying out a basic instruction. If the proper procedure is followed it can ultimately lead to dismissal.

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 17:35

It I haven’t failed to park as instructed - I was only told today on my way home....sigh

OP posts:
Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 17:35

Not that I would bother with a tribunal. Accept and move on!

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 22/07/2020 17:43

You were only told on your way home, which is reasonable. So tomorrow you follow the instruction and park as you were told. No need for drama.

If however you carried out the threat in your OP & the rest of this thread of “parking across two spaces” or just not in the spaces you have been told to the right way around then expect things to escalate.

SeaState3 · 22/07/2020 17:44

It’s sounds like he may have to clean his own skid marks off the “executive toilet” soon!

Comefromaway · 22/07/2020 17:48

Not relevant but our MD decided our cleaners wernt doing a good enough job, he dispensed with their services (contractors) and now he does it himself!

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 18:03

They are more than welcome to unblock their own toilets and urinals plus the 50 gallons of water I shifted off the toilet floor this morning. - because it’s ok to block the urinals with toilet paper so they don’t drain 🤬

SeaState3 · 22/07/2020 18:04

Yikes🤮

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 18:16

@SeaState3

That’s a pretty average morning. Today I scored 5 blocked gents toilets. Lucky me!!!

I'd leave and tell him to unblock the toilets himself now, with no reversing in the car park on his way in, of course!

SeaState3 · 22/07/2020 18:51

Blocked urinals and five blocked toilets is pretty average - no wonder you weren’t feeling obsequious when the MD collared you!

I

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 19:04

😊. All in the day of a warehouse cleaner. 😊

Tbh I do like a challenge.....!

OP posts:
Brefugee · 22/07/2020 19:18

So, what’s different about the supermarket or Ikea?

most people drive in forwards so they can load their car - and then most people use a lookout to reverse out. Well, in Germany they do, anyway.

MulticolourMophead · 22/07/2020 20:26

@Moondust001

It's irrelevant whether it makes sense or not. He's the managing director. You are the cleaner. Figure it out. The employer had every right to ban you from parking in THEIR car park. They also have the right you discipline you for refusing a reasonable instruction - to park as you are told in their car park. So yes, feel free to deliberately put two fingers up at them. Don't bother with starting the thread "i got sacked for disobeying my employers instructions". Seriously, he may be being ridiculous, but so are you!
If it was a reasonable instruction, why are none of the other staff doing it? They don't even know about this "rule", apparently.

MD or not, I think this bloke is taking a pop at the OP.

And they're in an area where cleaners are hard to come by.

OP is parking elsewhere in the car park now, but I think the MD needs to consider the consequences of his actions in singling one person out.

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 20:36

FWIW. The MD doesn’t employ me nor does his company. He only runs the site I’m currently cleaning in. The worst he could do is tell me to leave with immediate effect.
I’m employed by an agency who is employed by and agency who is employed by an agency to service the building’s facilities. So there is the MD and them three agencies before anyone even employs me to clean. The first two agencies have issued me with line managers to whom I’m held accountable - but not the third and final agency.
I’m just a cleaner at the bottom of a very long line of managers. The agencies to which I am accountable to have both asked me to take on more work - which I’ve refused as I would like a home life or just to sleep at some point. My other small job has also asked me to take on more hours - I might just accept this time and drop the hours at this one at least back to what I’m originally contracted.

I have it written in my agency contract that I need not give any notice if I wish to leave a job I’m asked to do although they would like (but not require) a reason as to why in order to prevent bad practice for the future.

Just a thought, remind your employers of the working time regulations/directive if they expect you to work 7/7 days a week and more than 48 hours a week.

Bargebill19 · 23/07/2020 11:07

@SeaState3
We are expected to opt out of the WTD as many employees in this area also expect you to do, so people do. So those regulations don’t apply once you’ve opted out.
I did have to dismantle the only working hot water boiler to descale it this morning - he wasn’t happy but I did say he could either wait until I’d finished with it or he could rebuild it and finish cleaning it himself - he chose to forgo his morning coffee. Sadly I also had blocked toilets to deal with.
Everyone else uses the coffee machine.

Bargebill19 · 23/07/2020 11:09

And night shift parked as I did yesterday - they haven’t been told any different😕.
Security didn’t know either - they got reported to themselves!
