It’s a parking one at work!!

So, I work part time as a cleaner. I drive a new car. I do 4 hours. Everyone else works 7-7 shifts. I’m out by 11am.

I have been told by the managing director that I must park my car at the front of double bays, not at the rear and always facing forward to avoid doors clashing and using reverse gear.
There are 200 spaces and only 20 cars on site at anyone time.
There is no signage to say forward parking only.
Nothing in my contract to say there are parking rules.
Not site specific rules anywhere.
I parked in space A facing forward to drive straight out - in front of me was a night shift car which would be leaving 15 mins after I arrive. I admit I like to park in the first space with a gap either side of me.
Apparently I can only park in spaces BCDEFG etc. Or I can reverse park into a space up at the fence. I do not like these as 1) they are disability spaces 2) they have overhanging trees which loose branches in the wind onto cars parked there.
I could have parked in space E this morning - but cars in D and F have made the space tight and I didn’t want to ding their doors or have them ding mine when there was zero need.
The manager director couldn’t give me a reason as to why I had to park like this other than to avoid using reverse gear - which I would have had to use to get into a fence space - or to get out of one. But apparently that was fine........
When I said he was bonkers - he said the gatehouse will report my car in the morning- I said fine nice to know security will keep an eye on my car! (Security have said they really couldn’t care less!)
There is no reason that is covid related that I can think of, as it is better for cars to be spread out to avoid people accidentally touching each other’s cars rather than parked like sardines. Especially when the majority of people arrive and leave together.
I’m so tempted to park across two spaces tomorrow facing the right way on the right side just to see him get even more annoyed.
FWIW - there are only two female drivers on site the rest are all men - if that makes any difference! Plus my car is the only bright yellow one in a sea of black or white cars.
Anyone have any ideas as to his reasoning before I do park it large???
@heartsonacake ah yes, of course, women should just do as they're told regardless of the fact that the rules only seem to apply to them. I guarantee the OP's boss is a wet weekend (as most 'office boys' are), who would not dare tell any male staff how and where to park.
It’s nothing to do with sex.

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 15:22

@heartsonacake

Considering I didn’t know how I was supposed to park, I couldn’t abide by the rules. As I was leaving there was no reason for me to correct my parking today - I was only told AS I was leaving. Tomorrow hasn’t yet happened so I haven’t had chance to park properly in a prim and proper manner.
Feel free to judge on what I might do before it’s happened.
Just remember that I have said several times I will park at the far end of the car park in the front row exactly as requested. What I can’t promise is that I will doff my cap and grovel pleadingly for a pardon if my parking is still not satisfactory.

No-one knows what the other employees have been told. OP left at 11am. How does she know there wasn't a meeting mid-shift, informing everyone of the new parking rules?

VioletGrace · 22/07/2020 15:23

@heartsonacake of course it's to do with sex! OP is female and has to park where she is told. Male employees can park where they like.

VioletGrace · 22/07/2020 15:24

I've come into contact with enough arsehole, sexist, male pigs of a boss over the years to know that something like this will only apply to female staff. Men will not dare tell another man where, or how, to park.

So could OP when she arrived.

Who's to say the others won't all have been told today and will park correctly tomorrow?

VioletGrace · 22/07/2020 15:25

@OlaEliza the men will not get told! Guaranteed!

OlaEliza · 22/07/2020 15:26

They do on plenty of construction sites and all the sites I've worked on for the last 6 years at least.

I know. That’s why I said you weren’t supposed to know before being told but now that you do you can abide by the rules.

VioletGrace You can’t just make stuff up to fit your own narrative.

Tlollj · 22/07/2020 15:28

Good job I don’t work there I’m shit at reverse parking.

VioletGrace · 22/07/2020 15:29

@OlaEliza in every workplace I've been at the rules only apply to women.

OlaEliza · 22/07/2020 15:30
@OlaEliza in every workplace I've been at the rules only apply to women.
You need to change industry then. Can I recommend the construction industry? I've never seen or experienced any sexism in over 20 years.

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 15:33

@Tlollj

You are more than welcome to join me up the end where we can drive straight into the front row - it’s only 180 spaces away from
the nearest other car. We will both be facing the right way with reverse gear never ever engaged. Just be prepared for a bit of a walk. ..

Choukette · 22/07/2020 15:33

@VioletGrace Wow you have a 100% track record of sexist workplaces. That's some achievement. Or Bullshit.

Massive industry that I work in and rules apply equally to every human being.

TrickyD · 22/07/2020 15:35

Those that notice just think it’s fun and typical of the ‘bubbly, smiley cleaner’ to have ‘something different’.

People who describe themselves as ‘bubbly’ are often perceived by others as brainless halfwits

Choukette · 22/07/2020 15:42

Those that describe themselves as bubbly, have issues with HSE policies and drive yellow cards with weird registration plates are definitely brainless halfwits Grin

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 15:43

@TrickyD

I don’t describe myself as bubbly - some of the warehouse and security staff described me that way.

If you want my opinion of myself here goes-
I’m a solitary person who hates humans with something akin to a passion. I have a very warped sense of humour compared to the rest of humanity. I’m a slightly mad, old, fat woman who is confidant of her abilities, strength and weaknesses. I am loyal to a fault, yet will not tolerate anyone who refuses to engage their brains. I will fight the corner of anyone or animal to weak or unable to defend themselves and most likely to give them my last penny.
I am owned by seven cats and have a life partner of nearly 40 years. No kids. I am happiest when there is no one around for miles.

Where did I describe myself as bubbly?!

OP posts:
Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 15:46

@Choukette

Absolutely no need to be so rude.
I have never described myself as bubbly -
others have.
I do not have a problem with h and s. I just wanted a proper explanation, never having come across this issue before.
I drive a yellow car with the reg issues by DVLA. Why? Because I can see it in a see if boring bland cars and can remember the ref easily. Also I got a whacking discount when I pointed out the rude word to the dealer 😃

OP posts:
Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 15:48

@Choukette @TrickyD

I could say those who fail to comprehend that which is written are “brainless halfwits”.

But why stoop so low?!

OP posts:
Singlebutmarried · 22/07/2020 15:51

@Bargebill19

Mazin. Love that you got a discount for Boobs.

I may apply that to my next car hunting spree.

VioletGrace · 22/07/2020 16:00

@Choukette you're being extremely, and needlessly, rude to OP.

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 16:07

@Singlebutmarried

I had to try and I do love to haggle. He could have said no!

Again, thank you.

OP posts:
SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/07/2020 16:35

I originally thought it was going to be a complaint about the colour or the registration as I’ve had both of those complaints before!

Do you have a rude registration?

Alsohuman · 22/07/2020 16:54

@Moondust001

It's irrelevant whether it makes sense or not. He's the managing director. You are the cleaner. Figure it out. The employer had every right to ban you from parking in THEIR car park. They also have the right you discipline you for refusing a reasonable instruction - to park as you are told in their car park. So yes, feel free to deliberately put two fingers up at them. Don't bother with starting the thread "i got sacked for disobeying my employers instructions". Seriously, he may be being ridiculous, but so are you!
It’s not irrelevant at all. MD doesn’t mean God. It’s not a reasonable instruction, it’s completely bonkers micromanagement about something so trivial it barely registers. Can you imagine what an employment tribunal would make of sacking someone because you didn’t like their parking?
