It’s a parking one at work!!

So, I work part time as a cleaner. I drive a new car. I do 4 hours. Everyone else works 7-7 shifts. I’m out by 11am.

I have been told by the managing director that I must park my car at the front of double bays, not at the rear and always facing forward to avoid doors clashing and using reverse gear.
There are 200 spaces and only 20 cars on site at anyone time.
There is no signage to say forward parking only.
Nothing in my contract to say there are parking rules.
Not site specific rules anywhere.
I parked in space A facing forward to drive straight out - in front of me was a night shift car which would be leaving 15 mins after I arrive. I admit I like to park in the first space with a gap either side of me.
Apparently I can only park in spaces BCDEFG etc. Or I can reverse park into a space up at the fence. I do not like these as 1) they are disability spaces 2) they have overhanging trees which loose branches in the wind onto cars parked there.
I could have parked in space E this morning - but cars in D and F have made the space tight and I didn’t want to ding their doors or have them ding mine when there was zero need.
The manager director couldn’t give me a reason as to why I had to park like this other than to avoid using reverse gear - which I would have had to use to get into a fence space - or to get out of one. But apparently that was fine........
When I said he was bonkers - he said the gatehouse will report my car in the morning- I said fine nice to know security will keep an eye on my car! (Security have said they really couldn’t care less!)
There is no reason that is covid related that I can think of, as it is better for cars to be spread out to avoid people accidentally touching each other’s cars rather than parked like sardines. Especially when the majority of people arrive and leave together.
I’m so tempted to park across two spaces tomorrow facing the right way on the right side just to see him get even more annoyed.
FWIW - there are only two female drivers on site the rest are all men - if that makes any difference! Plus my car is the only bright yellow one in a sea of black or white cars.
Anyone have any ideas as to his reasoning before I do park it large???

@maureen17

Yes the pick of 200. Not ‘my’ parking space at all. I do not, now does anyone else.
No car park = no workers as there are no buses or trains and it’s a good 10 mile walk as the crow flies to civilisation. Most of them drive at least 45 mins to get to work.

YANBU he is clearly a nutter BUT he is the managing director and you a part time cleaner so whether you like it or not you need to do what is asked of you.

TJ17 · 23/07/2020 18:05

Surely within reason @FelicisNox ! 😮😅

Are you married to Christian Grey? 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Bargebill19 · 23/07/2020 18:09

@TJ17

I think my mistake was wanting to know why!
Either I should be psychic or just rug my forelock whilst walking backwards out of the building. (oh hang on no reversing) Then walking the fifteen miles home across the fields whilst being ever so grateful for having a job. Or perhaps I should be content to sit in a rocking chair and knit whilst counting my pension.

Nah! never going to happen with this old granny.

😂😉

And quite right too! 💪🏼

You're employed by a company who's employed by a company who's employed by a company who's employed by the warehouse...

Next time you see the Managing Director Tel him if he cuts out the middlemen and offers salary based on what he's paying the first company he might be able to get some staff.

Because how bloody much are 2 interims shaving off the rate before it even gets down to you?

Outsourcing is even stupider than his parking obsessions.

WendyE · 23/07/2020 18:19

I thought this was a wind up when I first read it, but now I'm thinking the boss has recently attended a Health & Safety course - would I be right?
I still think it's nuts though.
Has anyone recently been run over on the car park I wonder? Not a joke, just curious.

genius1308 · 23/07/2020 18:32

I'm really surprised at the amount of pp saying 'he's the MD, he can basically do what he wants'. Er no, no he can't! If that was the case you'd have MDs all over the place making up rules willy nilly just for the hell of it. He might choose to implement a rule but needs a valid reason for the rule and then would have to disseminate the information to all staff and then would have to put the new rule in the companies policy booklet or staff handbook. He can't just make up rules and expect people to telepathically know them and not question the reason behind them, if it's not obvious. I'm quite astounded with the 'he's the boss do what he says' attitude Hmm

Bargebill19 · 23/07/2020 18:34

@DameFanny.
I totally agree. But in reality those operate the warehousing in this area do not think like that. I think they believe they are saving on human resource department and payroll staff. I don’t know if they are saving anything. Each interim are getting 36p for each hour I work. That much I do know!

@WendyE

No accidents since I’ve worked here and as far as I know non whilst this company has been in this warehouse. No idea if anyone has been on any courses.

So there are 200 spaces for on average 20 cars ?

He sounds like a right trumped up jobsworth so just tell him to stop be so fucking petty.

SeaState3 · 23/07/2020 18:40

I asked someone who used to work at BP about the no reversing out of spaces policy and it’s to improve safety\reduce workplace accidents. Driving headfirst into space A and out of space D seems ok to me.

Some of the posters here seem to think that this MD is “he who should be obeyed no matter what”. If this were a policy that was clear to all (car park signs or in work safety manual, everyone informed by email etc.) then fair enough, but this chap doesn’t lead from the front in all safety matters as he doesn’t wear the safety shoes that need to be worn onsite.

Such petty bullshit, especially after a morning of intense toilet unblocking and cleaning!

WendyE · 23/07/2020 18:42

Then definitely YANBU :)

Jeeperscreepers69 · 23/07/2020 18:44

Just park in a bay

Bargebill19 · 23/07/2020 19:14

@Oscarsdaddy

Yes that’s right.

@Jeeperscreepers69

That’s what I was doing! Exactly in the box ready to drive forward and out.
I now park like Billy no mates at the far end of the car park a good five minute walk from the gate house. I did have to reverse into the space as it was against the end fence. But I was facing the right way to just drive out and home!!

OP posts:
threatmatrix · 23/07/2020 19:36

So the real problem is that you can’t drive.

Bargebill19 · 23/07/2020 19:40

@threatmatrix

Apparently so! Although my insurance premium doesn’t reflect that!

OP posts:
Treacletoots · 23/07/2020 20:40

Do you really want to get into it with someone who is clearly completely mad?

Unless you're enjoying it, which is fine btw, I'd just do it to placate the lunatic.

Lweji · 23/07/2020 20:44

Are you married to Christian Grey?

Grin
iolaus · 23/07/2020 22:01

Although 99% of the time the car in front may have left due to the night shift having been due to finish shortly after yours. I've ended up with my car being parked at work for a week because I collapsed in work and was hospitalised for a week

Localocal · 24/07/2020 11:20

That's crazy. Yes, a rule about everyone parking nose out makes sense. But he is asking you to park nose-in, which is bizarre. And if everyone parks the same direction there is no difference in door opening between nose in and nose out.

Given the one way sytem, the most sensible thing would be for everyone to pull through a space in the A side of the row into a space on the B-G side of the row, so they can pull out facing forward at the end of the shift. No reversing at all in that scenario. Which is what you did. So you are not only not being unreasonable, you are being the most reasonable.

Bargebill19 · 24/07/2020 11:42

Well today I got reported for parking at the top end of the car park, whilst facing the right way. Apparently my car was behaving suspiciously whilst I was mopping the canteen floor.

I give up. Bat shit craziness has won the day.

OP posts:
OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 24/07/2020 11:45

Apparently my car was behaving suspiciously whilst I was mopping the canteen floor.
A bright yellow car that acts suspiciously when no one is driving it? It's Bumblebee isn't it? Wink

Lweji · 24/07/2020 11:46

Who cares about parking?

At my work, security might (might!) only be notified, and do anything about it, if a car occupies two spaces or is blocking the road or access to other cars.

Madness indeed.

Bargebill19 · 24/07/2020 11:50

I have no idea - the car was exactly as I left it when I finished. No alarms blaring or hand brakes released and it rolling away or anything other than just sitting there in the sun.

As I said bat shit crazy wins the day. Some people have way too much time in their hands at work - they are more than welcome to help clean urinals 😱
