Just curious.
I don't tend to at all.
Probably once or twice following someone else referencing a previous thread.
I name change quite often.

OP posts:

Ther are so many non-genuine posters though, but it's not a particularly new phenomenon.

Box room troll
Poo troll
Plimsoll troll
Begging trolls
Misery poppers
Politrolls/astroturfers
Journos
Think tankers
Marketers
The list is endless

BreconBeBuggered · 22/07/2020 13:24

Last time I did it it was because I'd been PMed by someone whose name I didn't recognise, who had asked MN to take the message down before I saw it. Most likely they'd messaged the wrong person or didn't mean to send a message at all, but it set my nosy bastard alert off at the time. Didn't find anything and it's not something I'd normally bother to do.

Wecandothis99 · 22/07/2020 13:26

Couldn't get so into someone else's life to care enough to do that! There's some on here who really REALLY need to get out more!

NK5fd36457X11218d61631 · 22/07/2020 13:39

Do I mean advance search?
When one searches a users name to see their previous post? I think people know what I mean.
Perhaps it is advance search...

I'm not that invested & I'm too lazy!
I do frequently name-change though in case someone RL recognises me, I don't want to be able to read all my old posts (I've been on here over 15 years I think)

IveSeenThings · 22/07/2020 14:15

Brecon- the deleted pms thing tends to be when marketers have pmd people when they aren't supposed to.

NameChange84 · 22/07/2020 14:47

I’ve done it for the following reasons;

They happened to mention they had a similar health condition to me and I looked to see if they’d posted more about how they got better.

When I smell bullshit and I’m sure they’ve contradicted themselves in the past. However, I wouldn’t then call them out. It’s just so I know they are untrustworthy and not to get sucked in.

They’ve said something so batshit/creepy/evil I want to see if they are just having a bad day or if they are usually a complete psycho.

I have a feeling I may know them irl.

I think they’ve got bad intentions and want them banned (usually prolific period/sexualised child comments/poo trolls etc)

longwayoff · 22/07/2020 14:50

Never, and no plans to do so. As for searching yourself - shudder - that's a bit like finding the diary you kept as a 16 year old. Let it all be gone, please.

Notmyrealname855 · 22/07/2020 14:52

I’ve done an advance search on someone I very strongly suspect to be PR... they post endlessly on one topic and it kills discussion. Would say they are but not sure how to report a user

SerenityNowwwww · 22/07/2020 14:53

I wish when you searched up a name it gave you their length of registration. Sometimes you see a post and think it’s someone who has just plopped in to cause mischief but it’s a name changer.

Although I have noticed some ploppers who have set up accounts a few years back, posted a couple of things them gone into a flurry of negative activity on the feminism board. Maybe they’ve been in jail or summit 🤷‍♀️

You do mean advanced search, reverse in relation to a thread has a different meaning so I can see how it might be confusing.

I very occassionally do it if something looks a bit iffy but in general I find that I don't register poster's names

FlibbertyGiblets · 22/07/2020 15:01

@Notmyrealname855

Do email into MN HQ about your poster in question and their single issue posting history, include a link or two to illustrate. They LOVE being sent stuff like that to nose through.

AlternativePerspective · 22/07/2020 15:24

It’s not troll hunting. It’s only troll hunting if you post on a thread “troll!” “Or I don’t believe a word of this,” or similar. Even MN HQ will take note if you e.g. find a serious inconsistency in posts. Also some people e.g. post about their relationship, and context is everything. E.g. someone might post that they have the most loving partner ever, does everything for them and the kids and has now done one thing which might be a red flag. And advance search might show that they have a history with this partner. He constantly belittles them, puts them down, has already had an affair and they’ve talked about leaving him for a couple of years now. Someone might then point out that there is more context to this, before the “well obviously he’s a loving partner most of the time, you should talk it through” posts start.

I might do an advance search if something seems like bullshit or is so extreme that you can’t imagine someone would join just to post about that. E.g. someone posts that they really need someone to be there for them because they’re on their way to hospital with their sick child and don’t know if they’re going to pull through, at 3 in the morning, and advance search shows they’re a first time poster. I usually just report those and invariably they disappear.

Or the other day there was a poster who I was sure I remembered as starting some kind of thread talking about how unreasonable someone else was, and then flouncing when people didn’t agree with her, and then did the same on another topic, so they had form, iyswim.

I actually don’t do it all that often, but I do do it. But I tend just to skim read rather than going into each thread and reading all posts, but will maybe go into a thread if the OP was posted by that person....

You could report their post next time and wrote an explanation.
MereDintofPandiculation · 22/07/2020 15:46

I assumed that people wouldn't be so sad as to make up posts. Itry not to be too specific in my threads, and I may change exes, ages, relationships of people I talk about, because I have recommended eg the elderly parents board to friends, and I don't want friends to recognise me and read things Ive posted that I wouldn't talk to them about in real life. So anyone searching on me will come up with inconsistencies. It doesn't mean the events I am describing are made up.

JaneJeffer · 22/07/2020 15:52

@Notmyrealname855 if it's who I'm thinking of they do my head in!

AnneKipanki · 22/07/2020 16:08

What is PR ?

I advance search if it is a familiar tale or it is so ludicrous it has to be someone looking for a thrill .

NK5fd36457X11218d61631 · 22/07/2020 18:35

@JaneJeffer @Notmyrealname855 : now I'm curious as to who you're talking about! Grin

Sorry,
Not sure how I came about that username. Think I accidentally typed it and decided to leave it on...

MrsTumbletap · 22/07/2020 23:06

How would you even do that? You can't do it on an ipad or iPhone surely?

Does that mean everyone that is doing it is using a PC?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/07/2020 23:20

I have this on mobile page and then you just search by were posted by username

KarlKennedyisaterriblehusband · 22/07/2020 23:24

I do all the time. This is because i think when a woman comes on here and asks if theyre being unreasonable about something that on first look seems like quite an over reaction, it is usually because it is the Straw that broke the camels back. So most posters will reply saying they need to communicate better As a couple and she is bu, and then the op think theyre the problem. when in fact, added to everything else, if people knew the backstory, theyd probably say run and dont look back.

Thurmanmurman · 22/07/2020 23:31

Not sure why anyone could be arsed
