Just curious.
I don't tend to at all.
Probably once or twice following someone else referencing a previous thread.
I name change quite often.

OP posts:
Port1aCastis · 22/07/2020 11:36

Only if I think the thread is a pile of made up shite, there was one last night which was absolute fictitious fantasy so I looked up the username and her past posts confirmed I was right, threads that are designed to get people to part with personal information always make me suspicious

Shmithecat2 · 22/07/2020 11:36

All the time tbh

Northernsoullover · 22/07/2020 11:38

Never. If anyone did it to me they'd have a field day. I make up shit all the time. Not trolling but details that might be outing, for example my cycling hobby might become archery. Minor deets Wink

Whenwillow · 22/07/2020 11:40

Does reverse searching mean doing a search on a poster's name? In which case, yes, but rarely, if something has been referenced that i don't understand, perhaps from a previous thread.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/07/2020 11:43

You are doing it wrong. You are supposed to say "hobby, but I can't say which one because it's outing" and then we will all guess if it's cycling or making cushions from human skins.

@NK5fd36457X11218d61631 yes you’re being naive. This is a public forum & trolls are a regular thing. Sometimes they can be quite clever, or you will see a repetitive theme within them. They may have certain agendas like wanting to rile up a group of women, or being intentionally provocative, or encouraging discussion of certain topics.

There is a theory that it's MN staff so they have busy threads.

TheQueef · 22/07/2020 11:51

I do but only if I need the full story of something.
I always fall for trolls so I prob should do it regularly.

vikingwife · 22/07/2020 11:56

@SchrodingersImmigrant really! You’d think they would spend more time investing in upgrading their website, this forum & its advertisement offering is quite outdated. I understand they rely on the Daily Mail for traffic at every available opportunity, so it stands to reason some threads could be engineered. But am certain there are still lots of legitimate trolls

There is a even a reddit forum dedicated to discussion of potential trolls on here....

Bluntness100 · 22/07/2020 11:57

Do you mean advanced search? If so yes I do it if the op refers to their previous threads or someone points out an anomaly and I’m interested, or if I recognise the poster and think something is wrong, past that no.

The function exists to be used, and if someone spots a troll through it, great they can report to mumsnet.

I really don’t get the angst some folks have about “oh I know you can see the history but please don’t look” nonsense.

lifeafter50 · 22/07/2020 11:58

Have no idea how you would do that, or why. I looked at MN on my phone so can't even seem to report a post.

vikingwife · 22/07/2020 12:02

But a lot of people name change for controversial threads, so looking up a poster’s history won’t always apply.

I do think when someone repeatedly asks for relationship assistance & then someone looks at their post history & remarks on the posting pattern, some people tend to be shocked or insinuate it’s “creepy” behaviour to do that.

However, it usually only seems to be when the OP has been caught out in a lie, or is being told their relationship is not a good one, based on all their previous threads.

I don’t think people go looking to check if you said your age was the same in every single thread, as people may tweak those details for privacy reasons.

Isn’t this why people name change sometimes when creating a thread? They don’t want it linked back to their username.

It’s not a creepy thing to do a background check in order to provide a more tailored & comprehensive response. People are taking the time to reply to a thread, so to call them “creepy” because they have discovered an inconsistency seems like a deflection.

vikingwife · 22/07/2020 12:04

@lifeafter50 you report on the phone by clicking on the three dots in the bottom right hand corner of each post.

TheMarzipanDildo · 22/07/2020 12:05

Rarely. Makes me feel like a stalker

TheMarzipanDildo · 22/07/2020 12:08

I’ve just reversed searched myself. Turns out I’m more boring than I thought Blush

Hailtomyteeth · 22/07/2020 12:24

Only if I suspect something off. Like the horrendous 'My teenage daughter's fatter than me [I'm more attractive than her]' threads we keep getting.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 22/07/2020 12:27

There's a lot of curtain twitchers who like to police the board. They do it all the time.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 22/07/2020 12:31

I generally forget posters very quickly, so if I recognise a username it's usually because I've found their posts memorable, and that's generally because they are either outstandingly helpful/ knowledgable about something, or I find them to be an arsehole. If the latter I do search them, to find out whether they are consistently an arsehole.

WingBingo · 22/07/2020 12:33

I did just the other night.

A post asking about having sex for the first time. Something didn’t feel right, I searched for their username to see if they had posted under that username before but never had.

It just cemented my feeling and I reported. Post was deleted pretty quickly, I can’t have been the only one that reported it.

TheHighestSardine · 22/07/2020 12:39

A dozen times in ten years maybe. Half to see if they've got form for trolling/being an intentionally ignorant twat, half to see if they are the poster I vaguely recall from another thread (usually not, shows how bad my memory is!)

Oh, plus I do sometimes check "User123456789" accounts for the latter because I particularly can't differentiate between them.

FlibbertyGiblets · 22/07/2020 12:46

Haha about hobby always being cycling. Never building Alp horns or a proponent of invisible ink graffiti. Grin

Notredamn · 22/07/2020 12:56

Reverse image search? Or advance search?

NK5fd36457X11218d61631 · 22/07/2020 13:02

It's ALWAYS cycling. Hmm
I've name changed a few times, mainly because I've mentioned my DCs names on a baby name thread - I know a lot of women I suspect are Mumsnetters.

OP posts:
loobyloo1234 · 22/07/2020 13:06

Never - I don't care enough nor have the time to do it

newyearnoeu · 22/07/2020 13:14

What do you mean by reverse search? I know how to advance search?
