"Women drivers"

Sailfin · 21/07/2020 16:18

Queuing outside a shop and a lady is reversing her car.

The man behind me, with a lady I imagine was his wife, loudly said "Be careful, it's a woman driver!".

I said "Oh my goodness... I haven't heard that sexist comment for many years!". He and his wife looked a bit awkward.

Should I have kept my mouth shut?

It just annoyed me.

Well done you! That made me chuckle. So long as you weren't aggresive about it then certainly its not a problem and I applaud you for thinking so fast :)

SewingWaspish · 21/07/2020 16:28

Absolutely right to call that our for what it was. Hopefully he'll think twice next time.

Abraid2 · 21/07/2020 16:29

I reversed my car into a tight space outside a shop, as usual, and an elderly man came up to congratulate me as he’d seen I was a woman and was amazed that I could do it.

Somanysocks · 21/07/2020 16:30

Hope you also told him women are statistically the better drivers.

stickygotstuck · 21/07/2020 16:32

@Somanysocks

Hope you also told him women are statistically the better drivers.
That's what I was thinking!
Sojo88 · 21/07/2020 16:32

I'm with you, OP! I try not to get offended too easily but...that is a very annoying comment!

PicsInRed · 21/07/2020 16:33

Women drivers!

...have the lower insurance assessed risk because we're better at driving. Grin

Dogsaresomucheasier · 21/07/2020 16:33

Lol! I’d have had a similar reaction. I suspect I’d have looked round expecting to see my late father. Well done you!

BigChocFrenzy · 21/07/2020 16:34

I'd have replied
"Yes, insurance companies think we're a lower risk"

Sailfin · 21/07/2020 16:43

Thanks all!

Damn - I wish I'd said about women getting cheaper insurance!

Well done.
I was once clapped for parallel parking by a group of workmen coming out of a cafe.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 21/07/2020 16:48

The insurance thing was changed in 2012 but basically they just put men's up!
I have had an older man come up and congratulate DH (I was standing right next to him) on my parking - "ooh she managed to get it in the space, and straight too!"
He got a right earful from me, the sexist pig.

Sailfin · 21/07/2020 17:52

I'm appalled at the stories of women being applauded, sarcastically, by chauvinist pigs, for parking well.

A father at the school car park used to regularly give me the thumbs up when I reversed into a space in one go in a large car.

Presumably he thought he was giving me a compliment but it filled me with rage.

Youbigdosser · 21/07/2020 17:58

Woman driver here on car number 4 and my previous 3 were all write offs when I was done with them Grin

qwertyuiop098 · 21/07/2020 18:01

Brilliant OP well done!

CeliaCanth · 21/07/2020 18:01

Well said. Sounds like he is stuck in 1972 when such comments were, possibly, vaguely funny.

userabcname · 21/07/2020 18:13

Ah. This reminds me. Once I worked with a particularly obnoxious male colleague. Among other things, he frequently made comments about "women drivers". One day we were sent to a different building and to save on taking 4 cars over, 4 of us decided to travel together. Obnoxious colleague offered to drive. We piled in, he started the car.....and reversed straight into the wall behind us. I promptly burst out laughing and every time after that when he said something about women drivers, we'd remind him that none of us women had ever managed to back directly into a wall. That soon stopped those comments!

Many years ago we had an Opel Manta. Picking dh up from the station, I reversed into a meter bay with a car in front and behind. Fair enough, I used the shop windows as a mirror and stuck my head out, also checking with a passing bloke that I was OK behind. Bit nervous as dh had rearranged the front wing twice when doing the same thing.

Still cross, 35 years later that 'd' h assumed that the cars before and behind weren't there, then ranted on that no bloke would have given him a hand. Refused to indicate to indicate to pull out in traffic as 'no-one would let him out.

Dickhead. Divorce hearing 6 weeks tomorrow. And counting!

Newtb - what a prat. Glad to hear that you will soon be free
