AIBU to be cross that DM has given my just turned 3 DD a cup of coffee and chocolate cake for lunch whilst I waited in the car for DS to wake up?

Was it an actual cup of coffee or a frappe, baby chino etc.

rotavixsucks · 21/07/2020 12:34

An actual small cup of coffee, full strength made from the coffee machine and only a dash of milk.

Wtf? Not ok!

Somethingorotherorother · 21/07/2020 12:36

Are you sure she isn't joking?

CeibaTree · 21/07/2020 12:39

Is your mum pranking you? If not I'd actually be a bit worried about her mental health if she has done this as no person in their right mind is likely to have done this. Although I can't imagine a 3 year old happily drinking a cup of coffee, it's definitely an acquired taste!

Friedeggsontoast · 21/07/2020 12:40

From a shop or your house?

CrimeCantCrackItself · 21/07/2020 12:40

Milky decaf; fine.

"Bye Mum, have a nice afternoon!" And off you pop.

Nottherealslimshady · 21/07/2020 12:41

Why the hell would anyone do that?! What's wrong with a cup of milk? Nutter.

Watermama · 21/07/2020 12:45

That's truly bizarre!

My grandparents used to give us milky coffee when we were tiny Hmm however it was very weak, now a days I don't think they would have done it.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 21/07/2020 12:45

Why would a 3 year old drink a strong cup of coffee ?? 🤔

Nixen · 21/07/2020 12:47

Surely your 3yo would just spit it out? Unusual to like that taste at 3 id have thought. I reckon your mums winding you up

LaurieMarlow · 21/07/2020 12:47

Surely they didn’t drink it? Was it full of sugar!

Rwoolley · 21/07/2020 12:48

Tbh I'm more impressed your kid managed to drink it!
slashlover · 21/07/2020 12:49

Surely a child would spit it out? Maybe it's like when I was 6 and proudly told my mum that my GPs had let me have a glass of wine with my dinner - it was Ribena and lemonade.

geojojo · 21/07/2020 12:53

My 4 year old loves the taste of coffee so dont agree they would spit it out. I often have decaf and he will happily have sips of that black. Definitely not good for your mum to give it though.

onalongsabbatical · 21/07/2020 12:54

Does she understand that caffeine is an actual drug with measurable affects on the body, and that coffee is a stimulant delivery system not a fucking food? She's an idiot. Choc cake not great but not the worst but coffee AND cake, never looking after her again not even for five minutes unless she's suitably repentant and knows what a fucking lunatic thing she just did.

Tootletum · 21/07/2020 12:56

I give our two year old coffee. Obviously with the coffee and milk proportions reversed. She asks for a little splash of it in her morning milk sometimes. No apparent harm. I'm sure mumsnet will tell me I'm killing her though.

rotavixsucks · 21/07/2020 12:56

She wasn't joking...she wouldn't have told me. I only found out because DS has woken up so I went in and found DD drinking it.

Sniffed it proper coffee. DM claims it was only a little bit from her cup but the rim of foam around the edge suggests otherwise.

We have a rocky relationship and have previously fell out about her behaviours with DD and I refused to allow her unsupervised access, I'm trying very hard to get along but things like this make it very difficult.

Why on earth would you give a child coffee?!

Gobbycop · 21/07/2020 12:59

Fucking hell 😂

She's mental.

Slight overreaction Grin It's a cuppa not a crack pipe

Bloops · 21/07/2020 13:05

Out of curiosity, did your child like it?!

HavelockVetinari · 21/07/2020 13:08

Yikes, I'd be cross - does DD normally nap in the afternoon (most just turned 3 year olds do)?

It won't harm her just this once, but will make her behaviour difficult to deal with this afternoon I'd imagine, and obviously if given regularly caffeine can be harmful to children, especially in terms of growth.

Chocolate cake for lunch - unless it's her birthday and pre-agreed then YANBU at all, that's ridiculous.

JMG1234 · 21/07/2020 13:09

My kids (similar ages to yours) came back from my in-laws having had coffee most days. I ignored it but, equally, told the kids that they couldn't have it at home, which caused quite a bit of grumbling.

I had more of an issue when we were all together and the kids asked if they could order coffees and we said no. My father-in-law overruled our wishes and told the kids they could order whatever they liked. At that point, it was a bit awkward as I put my foot down.

I don't think the odd coffee is the end of the world, but equally I find it slightly bizarre to actively encourage young kids to drink it, when there's more age appropriate drinks.

Yes, some people need to cool the jets. Grin
