"treats" - really cringey?

AIBU to find the word "treats" really cringey??

As in "oh I'm on a diet so limiting the amount of treats I eat" or "I brought some treats for the kids"...

In my mind it just really doesn't mean human food at all, it conjures up images of people knawing on a pedigree dentastix... or those disgusting meat sticks that the cats like...

*LIGHTHEARTED (obviously)! Yes I know I have too much time on my hands, but I'm still WFH and a bit bored...

I agree op.

We are sold the idea that we should be eating between meals and regularly consuming high calorie foods to be happy and that any level of hunger is wrong. 'Special' snacks and treats are advertised for between meals or afterwards, toddlers learn to feel disadvantaged if they don't have a regular cup of bright liquid and beige snack/treat.

We are all sheep to marketing. These words should be ditched, go back to meals only TBH. I struggle to get my DCs to do this in practice

HunkyPunk · 21/07/2020 14:41

dp's 'I'm going to watch a movie' (on the TV) and cupping both hands around his coffee mug while taking gulps makes me shudder...

Are you sure there isn't a bit more to that than just dislike of a particular word? Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 21/07/2020 14:45

I never snack between meals, so the word "snack" wouldn't suit me

I occasionally have junky food, which in my mind is a "Treat" - but by my definition that is once every couple of weeks at most.

diege · 21/07/2020 14:46

Hunkypunk Oh yes most definitely 🤣

RedLlama · 21/07/2020 14:57

A cheeky little..... makes me angry

BigChocFrenzy · 21/07/2020 14:57

Since Cadbury's decided to add vomit on their production line, most of my former "treats" no longer are

Franticbutterfly · 21/07/2020 15:00

My kids say "snacks" I hate it. I also hate "treats" and "goodies". I just called the things by what they are...chocolate/cake/biscuits. My DH calls it "crap" which is don't really like either.

Bluntness100 · 21/07/2020 15:03

Agree and I’ve posted this many a time seeing food as a treat is what Leads to bad eating habits, because you have a shit day you want to treat yourself, a good day you want to treat yourself, feeling sad, you want to treat yourself.

Food isn’t a treat, especially not high sugar or fatty crap.

BritWifeinUSA · 21/07/2020 15:04

I don’t understand why things that are completely bad for you and serve no nutritional purpose are considered “treats”. As in “we took the children to McDonald’s for a treat”. Shouldn’t a treat do you good?

LadyPrigsbottom · 21/07/2020 15:08

As in “we took the children to McDonald’s for a treat”. Shouldn’t a treat do you good?

A noble sentiment! But I don't think "I took the kids for a 20 mile hike and we shared an apple on the way, for a treat", has the same ring to it.

I don't like McDonald's at all, but I don't think ice cream, homemade cake, watching a film at the cinema, going to the theatre etc, although they are naicer activities, are good for a child's physical wellbeing, which is what I assume you mean by "do you good".

MrsToothyBitch · 21/07/2020 15:10

I have a daily " small indulgence"- usually something late afternoon with my cuppa, within my calorie count but not a meal. It just sees me right til supper. "Treat" doesn't sit well with me.

You lot would hate my shopping list though, if I'm buying a few nibbles for something, I put "snackies". Blush

firstimemamma · 21/07/2020 15:13

I don't mind 'treats', it's 'daily treats' that pisses me off! It's not a treat if you stuff your face with it every day!

Newkitchen123 · 21/07/2020 15:22

I can't bear the expression "grown up". It's adult! That juice advert for grown ups!! Grrrrr

Cherrycolaxx · 21/07/2020 15:30

It's just a saying you dislike.

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 15:43

@Boohoohoohooho haha I wondered if anyone would say that! I do too, but I think that just means that the word describes its meaning well...

How do we feel about 'snackies'?

MacduffsMuff · 21/07/2020 16:14

treaty tea

Oh that's appalling. I would rethink that friendship tbh ...

Mrsjayy · 21/07/2020 16:56

Snackies dear god snackies! Shock

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 21/07/2020 17:13

Snackies is surely the sort of thing that people say only to dogs. And even then only the sorts of people who call themselves mummy and daddy in relation to the dog.

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/07/2020 17:26

I'm not sure I've ever said "snackies" out loud Hmm ... even in jest!

@Calic0 Choc is bad but nowhere near as bad as choccy

Even I don't say snackies to the dog. And I'm sort of dog mummy who gives the ddog wrapped Christmas & birthday presents
SayakaMurata · 21/07/2020 17:32

I agree.

There was a poster a while ago who tried to justify giving her DD chocolate in her lunch box every day, because 'I want to give her a treat.' I wanted to shout 'Why ffs!?' at her!

derxa · 21/07/2020 19:11

There was the Mnetter who had Weetabix as a 'treat'

Barrowmanfan22 · 21/07/2020 19:17

I can go treats, but snacks makes me rage. As does choccy. Or a grown adult using the word naughty.
Nom nom nom or yummy is the WORST.
