Does anyone ever feel kind of down while on their period - rather than before?

I feel a bit down today, in a way that is similar to PMT in my past experience. Usually I feel rough the week before, but then once my period arrives I'm much better!

Has anyone experienced this? I assume it's hormonal, but it's new to me.

I noticed this is happening to me. I'm 41

Yes I’m on my period and have honestly felt near suicidal this week! I know that sounds extreme but it’s honestly how I feel. I am seeing this pattern since the return of my periods after finishing breastfeeding DC3 a year ago. I would go to the dr but I’m not keen to go at the moment.

I’ve noticed more extreme mood variances since having kids. Usually I’m propped emotional in a grumpy, highly anxious totally unable to deal with anything way during or slightly after my period....which is odd.

Look at PMDD. Its a severe form of PMS.

I am aware of PMDD.

I don't mean more severe symptoms, I mean the timing of the mood shift.

Seems like there's a few of us though with mood variations to how we 'normally' had PMT.

I remember reading once that between every 7 - 10 years, your cycle changes and new patterns evolve, which I guess could include emotional side effects.

I have no children and also feel really down during my period currently have it and feel awful actually took St. John’s sort today I actually googled and read that I may be lacking magnesium too which can apparently lead to these feelings

MaeDanvers · 20/07/2020 22:20

Yes definitely. But whenever I try and Google it only talks about PRE period symptoms. Very annoying.

AbsentmindedWoman · 20/07/2020 22:21

Oh, interesting about the magnesium! I used to take that as a supplement, must try it again!

Yes, i do OP. I feel depressed and weepy for a few days before. Then it lifts once my period is here.
It's always been like that for me, but I try and recognise the depression is temporary when it comes...

Well, after feeling blue with no appetite to speak of yesterday, today I felt MUCH better - except then I suddenly got weirdly starving with huge cravings for carbs, which I indulged like a woman possessed. And now feel like I could cry very easily. For literally zero reason Hmm

What the fuck?! It must be hormonal, nothing is upsetting me!

According to Dr Google carbs help you make serotonin which dips before/ during your period. I need to see a gynaecologist anyway but thanks to covid had to put that off, but really feel hormones might be out of whack. Starting to worry I am perimenopausal, and I'm only 35 Shock

The first day of my period I am more prone to being grumpy and crying. Then I'm totally fine for the rest of the month :)
