To think I’ve done okay, actually.

I have the results of the first year of my BA (Hons) History degree and I passed all 3 modules with pretty decent grades. Studying it full time with Open University, so 2 years left. Fitting it in with full time and part time job, current divorce after 20 year relationship and family commitments.
I have told people my end of year results and had a couple of half hearted ‘well dones’.
I think because I am older than the average student (mid 40s), working and studying from home, no one thinks it’s a proper course!
AIBU to cheer for myself and say ‘Bloody well done, you are brilliant and that’s a massive achievement’?

Well Done! You’ve done fantastically Daffodil

EyyyupButtercup · 20/07/2020 20:28

@HistorySuccess you are brilliant. Huge congratulations! What a wonderful achievement Flowers

I’m in a similar boat. I have been offered a fully funded PhD studentship in an area about 3 hours away from me. I haven’t heard so much as a single congratulations! Instead, I’ve heard quite a lot of ‘Oh, that’s a long way,’ and ‘it’s expensive over there.’ Sigh.
If people can’t be happy for you it says much more about them than it does about you.

Namechange8471 · 20/07/2020 20:28

Well done op!

I’m starting my English degree in September (I’m 30).

HistorySuccess · 20/07/2020 20:33

I'm a bit overwhelmed and again, thank you, you have all helped me feel brilliant Grin.

Congratulations to everyone else studying too. It has been darn hard sometimes when the sofa, a Crunchie and Friends has beckoned, so I'm very proud of you all x

That's amazing, I'm doing my OU course part time and that's difficult enough.

justkeeprunning5 · 20/07/2020 20:38

Is a huge achievement - thinking back to my undergraduate days from 18-21 doing it as an ‘adult’ is much harder than someone younger without commitments.

I think people do not realise how hard studying can be - I’m doing my professional qualifications (masters equivalent) whilst working full time and trying to keep my husband on side / upkeep a home / have a bit of a social life and it is HARD WORK! So well done you, wishing you all the best for the rest of your studies and new career that follows.

strawberrymilkshakemonkey · 20/07/2020 20:40

that's brilliant OP. i struggled in the first year of my degree, i cant imagine not having in person seminars and stuff. well done, have a takeaway or whatever else you like to treat yourself.

FTMF30 · 20/07/2020 20:41

🎉🎉🎉
I can't fathom working full time and studying for a degree. Cheers to a great start to getting your degree🥂

Marble2302 · 20/07/2020 20:42

I am doing a part time Masters with OU. I wouldn't have managed to work and complete the work with being a single parent so part time is the route for me.

I ended the year on 84% which is just below a distinction at Masters so I am going to try and work harder next year.

Well done everyone 👏

Catsrus · 20/07/2020 20:48

brilliant - OU degrees are very well respected as employers know how much committment it takes, well done. Lots of people haven't got a clue what it takes, just smile and ignore.

I did an OU degree and many years later ended up working there, only to meet up again with a fellow student from one of my second level courses who was also working for them. It's a wonderful institution, and I've taught for 4 Unis - it's heads and shoulders the best for students IMO. the quality of materials, tuition, student support - far better than any of the others.

Glittertwins · 20/07/2020 20:55

Another well done from me. It's fairly easy to do a degree when that all that is going. To fit it in with a full time job and a part time job is amazing

waytheleaveswork · 20/07/2020 20:56

Amazing, well done OP!

Coldspringharbour · 20/07/2020 20:56

Huge congratulations. I’m always really admirable of people studying as a mature student. To do it with all those other things going on too is amazing. Be proud. You totally deserve it 💐

Yellredder · 20/07/2020 20:57

Bloomin well done you!

Butterbeeeen · 20/07/2020 21:00

Well done OP. I know how hard you have worked and I’m very proud of you. I know as I also got my OU results today. Second year for me and one year to go. Go us

Onacleardayyoucansee · 20/07/2020 21:00

I know what it takes, you must have worked your socks off.

Huge congratulations OP, definitely treat yourself if you can.

IAintentDead · 20/07/2020 21:03

Congratulations and Very Well Done

Sunnyrainshowers · 20/07/2020 21:04

Good on you, a brilliant achievement!

stitchmaker85 · 20/07/2020 21:05

You've done really well! I know what it's like as I've been juggling a part time job, full time uni and a 7 year old (plus planning a big wedding for me and DH which was last September). I found many people weren't that congratulatory on my module results as they a) didn't understand uni grading systems or b) were only really interested in my final end result anyway. (My mum was always asking me "so is that like an A or a B Confused"
So don't worry most people just don't get it, I'm sure you'll have many more people celebrating once you've completed your course!

pandora206 · 20/07/2020 21:10

Well done OP, that's a great achievement.

OU degrees are well respected and recognised. Yours will give you a strong basis to go on to train to be a teacher. I did mine many years ago (nearly 40!) and it changed my life but goodness, it was very hard work.

Good luck!

PoodleMoth · 20/07/2020 21:15

That's amazing! Well done! Flowers

effiehabb · 20/07/2020 21:15

Bloody well done to you, that is a huge achievement!

GoodSister · 20/07/2020 21:16

Well done Flowers

IdblowJonSnow · 20/07/2020 21:16

Congrats OP!
Excellent achievement and I like your long term goal of becoming a teacher. You can absolutely do it. Star

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 20/07/2020 21:19

That's amazing, to do so well with everything else you've got going on! Congratulations! Bravo! Flowers
