I have the results of the first year of my BA (Hons) History degree and I passed all 3 modules with pretty decent grades. Studying it full time with Open University, so 2 years left. Fitting it in with full time and part time job, current divorce after 20 year relationship and family commitments.
I have told people my end of year results and had a couple of half hearted ‘well dones’.
I think because I am older than the average student (mid 40s), working and studying from home, no one thinks it’s a proper course!
AIBU to cheer for myself and say ‘Bloody well done, you are brilliant and that’s a massive achievement’?

Well done OP. It's your achievement and you can and should be proud of it. I'm an OU Graduate and I know the sacrifices people make and the hard work people like you put in to suceed. Don't let other peoples negative attitudes bring you down.

Randomness12 · 20/07/2020 19:50

Huge congratulations OP that’s epic! I’m studying with the OU alongside full time work and it is insanely hard. Kudos!

Well done! I have a history degree (done the easy way as a youngster) - it’s a great subject. Also, my husband completed a graduate diploma last year (degree conversion, he was a graduate in a different subject) via distance learning and it was really hard work! I was also really surprised at all the rules around footnotes, quotations etc, I’m sure it wasn’t so onerous back in the 90s!

Keep going!

Grapewrath · 20/07/2020 19:59

Huge well done. You should be so proud! I did OU and tbh my parents barely acknowledged it and didn’t even congratulate me on graduating.
I think some of it is jealously tbh, people don’t like to see others doing welll.
Take yourself out for a treat. You deserve it

Chaotica · 20/07/2020 20:00

Well done! It's a great achievement, especially while working 1.5 jobs.

IndigoHexagon · 20/07/2020 20:02

You are awesome! You’ve done three modules in one year?? I too had my results today from my first module so I know how hard you must of work to do three!

Well done!

Mangofandangoo · 20/07/2020 20:02

Well done OP! ThanksStar

TheCanyon · 20/07/2020 20:05

Well done @HistorySuccess it's bloody hard doing it purely at home by yourself, the only support a bunch on young yins on WhatsApp talking nonsense all day Grin Especially if youre a procrastinator like me

I got my final ou results today which were a bit of a mixed bag, distinction and a grade 3 Hmm I didn't like that module funnily enough Grin

Our final exam was home based EMA style, one poor guy on my module submitted his last TMA instead of their exam Sad

Kazzyhoward · 20/07/2020 20:06

Achieving qualifications later in life when you have family/work obligations is a massive achievement. You should be, and deserve to be, massively proud of yourself.

ClashCityRocker · 20/07/2020 20:06

Well done! Also got my OU results today, very pleased.

It's hard work and has been made even harder this year due to the pandemic so I think it's a fantastic achievement and am celebrating with a big glass of 🍷.

Byllis · 20/07/2020 20:06

Well done. An achievement to be proud of.

Anyone giving lukewarm congratulations doesn't understand the course and what passing it means. I studied languages and my major was the language of a country best known here for beach holidays. Someone once confidently proclaimed that it was 'all about buying ice creams on the beach.' Pure ignorance!

Staplemaple · 20/07/2020 20:09

Amazing achievement OP, especially at the moment with everything going on. Although I found the other years of my degree more challenging academically, the shift from not studying to first year is a massive one, and in that respect the hardest. You should be proud of yourself.

Littlemeadow123 · 20/07/2020 20:13

Well done! That's brilliant!

ECBC · 20/07/2020 20:13

Well done you!! Sounds like you are juggling loads which makes this achievement even greater. You definitely deserve to celebrate!

Massive well done OP, you are fantastic! Star

JennyWoodentop · 20/07/2020 20:18

Well done!!!
I really admire mature students who can find the motivation to go back into education while juggling other obligations. Good luck for the future.

Welshmaenad · 20/07/2020 20:18

I was a mature student and also got divorced mid way through. It nearly killed me.

Pour yourself a glass of something lovely and celebrate your amazing achievement!! Massive, massive well done to you ThanksThanksThanks

EwwSprouts · 20/07/2020 20:19

I think that's awesome. You must be so committed and disciplined to achieve that with all your other commitments. Great role model for your DC. Celebrate CakeWine

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 20/07/2020 20:20

Nice one!!! Enjoy celebrating Cake

didireallysaythat · 20/07/2020 20:21

Wow - good for you!

When hiring, I always treat those who have got their degree or PhD part time while working as having an exceptional work ethic - I know I couldn't have done it.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 20/07/2020 20:22

Well done!! An old manager of mine (she was very senior) said she was much more impressed with interviewees who studied as adults (either through OU or evening at studies ) because of the sheer hard work and commitment it takes

Eugenieonegin · 20/07/2020 20:24

More than okay, brilliant! Congratulations, stick with it , those modules build a degree. 💻📖 Good luck with the rest of your studies.
