To think "Blow off" is NOT more polite than "Fart"?

We have a toddler. He has just learned the word "Fart". DH thinks we should teach him to say "Blow off" instead as it's nicer/more polite.

AIBU to think "Blow off" is a much worse term than "Fart"? It sounds very crude to me. It definitely doesn't sound to me like a polite euphemism and I'd rather just say "Fart".

YABU = "Blow off" sounds more polite than "Fart".
YANBU = "Blow off" sounds worse than "Fart".

Truth is that there is no good or polite euphemism. So pick one and run with it.

Fart is generally frowned on by primary teachers so you need an alternative.

Might I suggest ‘parp parp’ 😂

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 20/07/2020 00:09

I prefer trump. I hate the others.

Crabbo · 20/07/2020 00:10

It all means the same thing so what’s the difference really? I mean talking about it is never going to be polite is it so I don’t think it matters what the word is. Mine say fart.

floppybit · 20/07/2020 00:10

How about pump? That's a goodun

MoonBaby1 · 20/07/2020 00:11

I never knew that fart was considered a demi swearword till about a year ago. Getting offended over it seems so twee.

Ireallymustgotobed · 20/07/2020 00:11

YANBU my DM has all sorts of euphemisms for bodily functions and thinks it is fine to talk to my 5-year-old DD about not getting tubby/plump as if it is better and less body shaming than saying fat. She always referred to farting as ‘blowing off’ and even as a child it felt ridiculous saying it.

19lottie82 · 20/07/2020 00:11

What’s wrong with fart?

floppybit · 20/07/2020 00:11

My mum used to insist we said blow off, but she's a bit of a snob really

Yawwwwwwwn · 20/07/2020 00:12

There's nothing rude about blow off. I prefer terms such as air biscuit ("who baked an air biscuit?") but you could say broke wind. I never saw how fart is or was comparable to words like shit - words which describe something but are obvious swears - but air biscuit, cut the cheese, opened the handbag - all perfectly fine.

katy1213 · 20/07/2020 00:15

You're right; vulgar euphemism is far, far worse. Not encouraging tiresome conversation on the subject would be best, but good luck with that with boys!

SickOfThisVirus · 20/07/2020 00:15

To my mind, "Fart" seems like a fairly neutral term. "Blowing off" on the other hand conjures up mental images of air blowing out of someone'a bum so I don't think it sounds polite/sophisticated like DH seems to think it does.

OP posts:
blosstree · 20/07/2020 00:18

I was brought up to think that fart was extremely uncouth. I don't mind hearing it but we say 'break wind' in my family, twee as it may be Grin

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 20/07/2020 00:22

It was always referred to as a 'fluff' when I was little

That seems bonkers now 😂

steff13 · 20/07/2020 00:26

The polite thing to do would be not to discuss it at all. What about toot?

UsernameNotValid · 20/07/2020 00:27

We like a good fart here, I'm 34 and still howl with laughter at fart jokes. DD and my Mum like to play "pull my finger" so it's definitely a family thing 🤭

I work with kids and some of the bizarre names they come out with - pump, toot, trump, pop, parp are among the best -ridiculous to me.

Doesn't really matter though does it? It's all the same thing!

Destroyedpeople · 20/07/2020 00:28

We used to say 'blow off ' too....

I think 'trump' has to be the best word to teach toddlers in this day and age...

Personally I think 'fart' is fine but then I did teach my children to call the toilet 'the shitter'. Lol not really.

lukasiak · 20/07/2020 00:28

I always cringe when I hear people call farting anything else but a fart. It's like biting into a lemon. Like, you just made something already gross even more gross by trying to make it twee.

MintChocAddict · 20/07/2020 00:28
Grin
Giraffey1 · 20/07/2020 00:29

How about ... who dropped one?

Feellikedancingyeah · 20/07/2020 00:31

Flatulence : and you can have fun listening to kids trying to pronounce it

Brot64 · 20/07/2020 00:31

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/07/2020 00:31

I was never allowed to say fart as a child, had to use "pop". I found it so twee and ridiculous that I have always used fart with DS and don't think it's offensive. My parents no longer are offended by it either and use it freely. Blow off isn't bad though, it's a bit more school friendly. The one I really loathe is "drop your guts" - my ex used to say that and it is too descriptive.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2020 00:32

'Blow off' sounds like an attempt to be more polite than 'fart', but as it fails it sounds worse.

'Break wind' is probably the least bad euphemism if your DH is being daft about not using the perfectly normal fart.

Destroyedpeople · 20/07/2020 00:33

Oh just say 'fart' ffs it's not a 'bad word'. What's wrong with people...

AhBallix · 20/07/2020 00:34

We used to say 'pop' when the kids were very small, but once they saw the reaction the word fart got from people, they were saying it left, right and centre - equally gratified by laughter and shock. So we all say 'fart' in this house and sod everybody else and their finer sensibilities.
