To think "Blow off" is NOT more polite than "Fart"?

We have a toddler. He has just learned the word "Fart". DH thinks we should teach him to say "Blow off" instead as it's nicer/more polite.

AIBU to think "Blow off" is a much worse term than "Fart"? It sounds very crude to me. It definitely doesn't sound to me like a polite euphemism and I'd rather just say "Fart".

YABU = "Blow off" sounds more polite than "Fart".
YANBU = "Blow off" sounds worse than "Fart".

They use to be called Trumps in our house but now they are called Donalds 🤣

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2020 00:37

How about the BFG's 'whizzpop'?

AhBallix · 20/07/2020 00:39

@GoldenHoops

I like that! DonaldsGrin

WaitForCake · 20/07/2020 00:39

Ex MIL has taught my son ‘poop’ for fart. Why in the world would that be the sensible choice? It just means I have no idea what DS is telling me now!

BrummyMum1 · 20/07/2020 00:40

I’d start with using the word Trump for a toddler. Then, as @GoldenHoops has suggested, move on to Calling them Donald’s when DC becomes more politically aware. 😆

Mothership4two · 20/07/2020 00:40

Squashed a frog?

wibdib · 20/07/2020 00:44

Growing up fart was definitely seen as impolite although probably not quite as bad as shit. I still wouldn’t use either if I was talking to my mother.

Bubblebu · 20/07/2020 00:45

this thread is giving me the giggles :)

WhatRhymesWithTerf · 20/07/2020 00:51

The NHS website uses the term "fart" when listing symptoms. I was looking something up and I know how silly I sound but I was expecting "flatulence" or "wind" and got a bit of a shock to see fart being the term used Grin

This is clearly one of the great issues of our times so I have given it considerable thought. I believe that the term to use is 'Backfire' as in "Oops, I've just backfired."

I save my backfires for the occasions when I am exiting a lift and the doors are about to close behind me.

Bubblebu · 20/07/2020 00:53

what about "let rip" ?

Staffy1 · 20/07/2020 00:57

Haha! How about one my father used to use: "poof bang".

Topseyt · 20/07/2020 00:58

We have always called a fart a fart in this house. Right from when the kids were babies.

My parents used to consider it "vulgar" when we were growing up, but don't seem that bothered by it now.

Some of my childhood school friends did call them trumps. It means that I have always thought of Donald Trump as President Fart, ever since he came to power. I think it is entirely appropriate.

I do like the knots that some people tie themselves in in order not to say fart. Blow off, fluffs, puffs, fairy puffs, pumps, trumps, pops .... The list can be endless. Hilarious too. 🤣🤣

MoominKitty · 20/07/2020 00:59

@MrJollyLivesNextDoor me too lol, at primary we called called it fluff or guff Grin, at home it was fart or wind though.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 20/07/2020 00:59

We were taught fart was rude growing up so used blow off. My DH (so consequently all my kids) call them hot ones, as in "urgh he's done a hot one"Blush

FlowerPig · 20/07/2020 01:01

Never heard blow off being used. It makes me think of a blow job 🤷🏼‍♀️

NeverHadANickname · 20/07/2020 01:04

We always said pump and my Dad says he has stood on a frog. Fart still sounds a bit weird to me coming out of small mouths because it was never allowed but that will be what DS will be saying when the time comes unless he has something more creative to call them.

Goingdownto · 20/07/2020 01:05

Pump?
I don't like fart but I don't have to worry about it as it's not something I would ever do Grin

NC4Now · 20/07/2020 01:05

Fart was practically a swear word in our house growing up. My parents even considered trump a bit uncouth.
I’ve no problem with either term, but blow off sounds grim.
My kids used to call them Donald’s briefly too. Now they have other names for Mr Trump.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 20/07/2020 01:07

Air biscuit! That’s horrible!

Topseyt · 20/07/2020 01:08

Actually, whilst we do call a fart a fart here as I said, I should add that my old labrador's farts did become known as room-clearers. For good reason, as it sometimes seemed like a gas attack!

Fart is best.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 20/07/2020 01:09

"Blow off" is so twee it's an insult to my intelligence. Just say fart.

9PointsOnMyLicence · 20/07/2020 01:09

Backfires are proof that God exists and gave us the gift of humour. Now if someone could just pull that finger........

sageandroses · 20/07/2020 01:16

@WaitForCake we had that word too! I got very confused when watching American television when I was younger as they use it for poo

Topseyt · 20/07/2020 01:21

@FlowerPig

Never heard blow off being used. It makes me think of a blow job 🤷🏼‍♀️
🤣🤣 OP should tell her DH that! It might just deter him from teaching their child to say "blow off" instead of fart.
