Spain or not to Spain?

DH wants us to fly to Spain in a couple of weeks for a family holiday. We have a villa there with our own pool. There's only the one week in August we can go due to DH work, and bonus that flights are a great price.

I feel we all need the break (esp me who was home with our 3 young kids during whole of lockdown as DH worked throughout.) Feel the kids deserve it as they have been great and missed out on a lot same as everyone else.)

I'm reluctant due to the following reasons:

  1. Not sure is it soon to fly with COVID, is it worth the risk?
  1. My youngest would turn 2 while we would be away and I know grandparents would be upset not seeing him on his special day.
  1. I'm actually scared to tell my Mum if we do book it as she's strongly against travel at the moment, is very judgemental and throws major strops. Think she will probably not speak to us for a while. (My sister is 7 months pregnant which will make her even more against it.)
  1. Had invited a few family members, little cousins over to celebrate the little ones birthday in the garden so would have to cancel/ rearrange.
  1. Have a family member coming with his child to the garden get together who were going to stay the night. (He's having a hard break up and I know it meant a lot to him & he was really looking fwd to it.)Worried about letting him down/ upsetting him. (Also had him up last weekend.)
  1. Could rearrange get together for the next day but know some family members would feel uncomfortable that we had just stepped off a plane.

AIBU to deprive my family of a holiday because I'm mainly worried about upsetting/ letting other people down?

Do you think it's to early to fly?

I would go

MidnightHangingTree · 19/07/2020 22:27

I'm currently in Greece. I think you should go - the airports and planes are fine.

netflixismysidehustle · 19/07/2020 22:28

Is it in one of the areas going in lockdown soon?

Foxinsocks1 · 19/07/2020 22:29

I wouldn’t. I’m seeing holiday photos of people walking around in face masks and it just looks stressful. I know you have a villa but I’d still just hang on. Videos of Z celebs in Spain are showing no social distancing in bars so no doubt there’ll be more rises in cases soon.

farmertom · 19/07/2020 22:29

I don't really have an answer but am in a similar predicament so watching to gage response!

blinkbonny · 19/07/2020 22:32

I would go, given that you have some security of accommodation. In the absolute worst case (and unlikely) scenario that you were unable to travel back, at least you have somewhere to stay and can control your environment and interactions to a good degree. We just cancelled a European holiday (not Spain) because staying at a hotel we felt that there was too much uncertainty of contact with others and if we couldn't get back there would be further difficulties. But in the setup you describe, I think the benefits outweigh the risks. Have fun!

We are flying to spain on sunday with the kids. We are using the inlaws place. We have purchased washable masks and also N95 masks for the flights. The places are actually quiet there at the moment , we are familar with the area and will not be venturing far

Thehop · 19/07/2020 22:35

If I had a house/apartment of my own I would go, I just wouldn’t want to be in a hotel.

Friend can house sit of he needs to escape.

Parents will recover.

Hoppinggreen · 19/07/2020 22:39

If your main reason for not going is not wanting to upset your Mum then you are being pretty ridiculous

elQuintoConyo · 19/07/2020 22:43

Many places here are experiencing a second wave.
I would not bring covid from the UK, go though airports and flights, or take it back home with me.
Can't people just wait until next year?

aquamarine1 · 19/07/2020 22:44

Definitely go, we're just back and had a fabulous time.

elQuintoConyo · 20/07/2020 12:52

Well, as long as you have a fabulous time, fuck those of us who want our kids to go back to school in September?

Have you seen Málaga? Barcelona? Lleida? Shock

TheVanguardSix · 20/07/2020 13:07

If I were in your shoes, I would go.
I would stick to my villa, avoid the beaches and busy areas.
Upon return, I would NOT rush into seeing family and friends back in the UK. Instead, I'd isolate for 2 weeks because of the risk of exposure on the flight (planes are germ baths) OR I'd get tested.

That's what I'd do in your shoes.

aquamarine1 · 20/07/2020 13:09

Who are you to police people's holidays @elQuintoConyo?? It's perfectly legal to go abroad.

mrpumblechook · 20/07/2020 13:12

I suppose it depends on whether you will be happy locked down in the villa as that could happen. You may also need to wear face masks the whole time when out and about. I probably would just for the pool though!

IAintentDead · 20/07/2020 13:13

I would go

I'm going to Turkey in September

HairyFloppins · 20/07/2020 13:16

We have a holiday booked in August to drive down but I am thinking of staying here. Certain areas may have to go back to phase 2 to restrict the spread. I will keep an eye on the numbers, but it’s not looking good.

blue25 · 20/07/2020 13:20

No, why are people so keen to go abroad ASAP. Have a holiday here-less stress and you won’t get stuck if there’s a lockdown!

DiscBeard · 20/07/2020 13:23

I'd go.

SoPanny · 20/07/2020 13:25

Normally I’d be completely gung ho about this but Spain is one place I’d be very wary of. Rightly or wrongly the Government seem to be ultra careful about COVID spikes and seem to be imposing localised lockdowns quite briskly and firmly. To be trapped in that personally would be a bit of a nightmare for me though granted you having your own villa and not being in a hotel could make me less risk averse.

It’s the letting family members down bit that - for me - could make the pitfalls outweigh the benefits and postpone plans until October holiday time.

2155User · 20/07/2020 13:27

Do you drive? Do you walk around? Do you go up and down the stairs at home? All the same risk of something happening.

Definitely go. Prioritise you and your family.

Lemonmaid · 20/07/2020 13:27

I think you know the answer OP @oopsywoopsy . Regardless of whether or not you might let others down, it's still risky, full of hassle imo, and some parts of Spain are about to go back into lockdown.

I get that you and the family want/need a holiday but it sounds like you have some fun times planned here. Stay home and go next year instead.

Coronabegone · 20/07/2020 13:28

Yep I'd go! Have fun.

lyralalala · 20/07/2020 13:29

Where abouts in Spain?

rookiemere · 20/07/2020 13:29

I'd be reluctant to fly to Spain at the minute- well actually I couldn't without quarantine as I'm in Scotland.

Not bothered about catching corona as think we've already had it, but would be worried about being stuck over there if there was a sudden lockdown and having to pay for new flights.

I'd look at putting the money saved on flights into a really nice UK holiday rental.
