Are you on you planning to go on holiday this year? With kids?

We had a holiday booked for may (DM, DD and me), but it was cancelled of course... My DM now wants to rebook for next month as the prices are really good. The place we go is where my DD's family live so we don't get to see them unless we are there (not a huge issue as they don't make too much effort), but i'm really unsure if I should be taking DD who is 2. My DM is spamming me with holidays constantly, even though I've told her I'm unsure. One minute I'm fine and thinking everything will be fine, the next I'm worried about going in the current situation. But i do tend to worry about everything a bit too much. Maybe more restrictions will be relaxed by then, but they could also be stricter?
I'm just looking to see what other people are thinking really? Are holidays with a kid a no go until next year?

None of us have any health issues or weak immune systems. I've also seen people arriving at this destination on Facebook and posting videos and everything seems fine and enjoyable.. I just don't know what to do.

You'll probably get a more positive response if you're talking about a holiday in this country op. I know loads of people with kids who have booked a week or two somewhere in the uk.

We're going to France next week but we're driving. I probably wouldn't have been as comfortable with a flight somewhere. And we're keeping an eye on the situation so if it looks like deteriorating we will delay a year.

NillyFrickers · 19/07/2020 12:55

@Whatafustercluck oh sorry, yes I should've mentioned it is abroad. About a 4 hour plane journey away.

I was planning on booking somewhere in the UK for around my birthday in September , but DM is going in about going abroad.

Fingers crossed the situation prodresses positively for you so you can get your holiday Smile

BillyAndTheSillies · 19/07/2020 13:04

Similarly to you, a lot of DH's family are about a four hour flight away but thankfully the decision has been taken out of our hands because they aren't allowing people from the UK entry at the moment.

I'd like to go away, but find flying with children stressful enough let alone doing it with masks on, making sure they don't move on the plane, waiting for air stewards to escort us to the toilet.

We've resigned ourselves to no holidays this year. We've looked at the UK but left it too late and now confined to school holidays and everything is just extortionate.

Littlecaf · 19/07/2020 13:06

I’d stick to this country. Air conditioning on plane? No thanks!

anothernamereally · 19/07/2020 13:07

Yes I'm going abroad this week with children, I'm a little nervous about the masks on the flight but they might become a permanent feature on flights anyway

NillyFrickers · 19/07/2020 13:14

@anothernamereally yes! Part of me is thinking that it may be the case for a long time, so does that mean I can't go on holiday for a long time. I'm keeping an eye online, I'm in a few groups related to the area that we visit and so far everything seems fine. I just always have this anxious person inside me that says what if?

Are you worried about the virus in any way? I go through phases of not worrying and worrying.

As you can tell I'm a really annoying when it comes to things like this. Can't make up my mind at all.

Following this thread as we had our first family holiday booked this year which isn’t till September but even that was cancelled! Would like to go abroad as I don’t consider staying anywhere in this country as a holiday

NillyFrickers · 19/07/2020 13:31

@PumpkinP hahaha yeah it's more of a break than a holiday in the UK. I would love to go i'm just worried. Surely if the plane wasn't safe then they wouldn't allow us to go, especially children under 5 as they can't really wear masks? Or am I being naive here?

OP posts:
GreenTulips · 19/07/2020 13:35

The main issue is you have to rely on other people doing the right thing.

Countless times I see people not hand sanitizing in shops, not wearing masks, going to large gatherings

I wouldn’t trust them.

I’m not going!! I wouldn’t put my family in that position.

JassyRadlett · 19/07/2020 13:39

Under 10s are incredibly low risk no matter what. I’m not sure why kids would be a barrier to travelling?

We are flying on holiday in late August as long as current restrictions aren’t tightened again. Both kids under 10 so they won’t have to wear masks in the airport or on the flight. I expect the 8 year old will anyway; 4yo is more hit and miss.

They’ve had a really shitty six months so it’s important to us to try to do some ‘normal’ things, especially as they’ll be missing some big treats and trips down the track (big birthday parties, seeing family at Christmas due to closed borders, etc.)

The risk to them is no greater than going to the park at home. The risk to us is maybe marginally higher but still tiny. There is no good reason not to.

Thistly · 19/07/2020 13:45

I think the problem with taking kids abroad is not about them getting ill, it’s about how much hard work it will be keeping to whatever restrictions are in place at the time.
We have never had a strict lockdown here because we don’t have the officers to enforce it. Other countries can be completely different; if there is a sudden strict local lockdown whilst you are there, it will not be much of a holiday.

NillyFrickers · 19/07/2020 13:45

@JassyRadlett thank you. I know children are very low risk, but there's people who keep saying things like "I wouldn't forgive myself if something happened to my children" or "I'm not putting my children/ family at risk" and that changes my mind. I've taken my daughter to the park almost every other day since they've reopened, and on some sunny days it was very busy. My daughter hates being in the house, I know she would love being on holiday. She loves swimming, she loves the attention she gets when we're over there and she would get so see some familiar faces. I also would love to go away, it's been a really shit year and we were looking forward to this holiday so much (may) as we had booked a really nice all inclusive hotel for a change. That hotel isn't opening this year, and all inclusive is out the window, but it would still be enjoyable I guess.

No way would I go abroad this summer. Too stressful at the moment & don’t want to be stuck if there’s a lockdown.

JMKid · 19/07/2020 13:49

I'm going to Spain with DS and DM in a weeks time. I can not wait. Not bothered about restrictions at all. Will deal with them when there.

anothernamereally · 19/07/2020 13:49

I'm not any more worried there than here about the virus, we will keep ourselves to ourselves and follow local guidelines

KoalasandRabbit · 19/07/2020 13:50

We've had to cancel our holiday in Asia this summer and I've booked a week and a half in Devon. DH didn't want to fly and got self-catering apartment so minimal risk. Our Asian holiday was quite wildlife based and there's quite a lot of wildlife around Devon, dolphins, porpoise, seals, puffins, ponys, highland cattle - not the same as Borneo but think we will still enjoy it.

We ruled out abroad as two sets of possible lockdowns to contend with and know we could get home here quickly if an issue and free healthcare. DH thought a plane was high risk - I think its about 1 in 3,000 with it now in UK so maybe 1 in 3 chance someone has it on plane and you would need to be sitting next to them to get it though not sure of risks from toilets. My DS is ASD and goes to every possible toilet so was a bit concerned about that but hard to know. Was worried abroad about insurance cover, healthcare, masks, local lockdowns, things closed, losing money and just in the end seemed more stress than relaxing but if you have those things covered and its last minute would consider it. We aren't bothered about weather so UK was fine for us.

mindutopia · 19/07/2020 13:58

We are going on holiday, but in the UK (we'll drive there, have no contact with anyone, basically just us in a holiday cottage and we'll take some countryside walks - we live in the countryside already, similar area of the country, but we just want to see somewhere besides our own 4 walls). I wouldn't take a holiday abroad, no. There will be so much time for big summer holidays in the future. We actually haven't had a family holiday in a few years, so 7 days in a UK holiday cottage is a pretty big deal. I can save Spain for a few years longer.

timeforawine · 19/07/2020 14:04

Yep off to Majorca in Aug with our 4 year old and also looking to book something for straight after Christmas

Frazzled2207 · 19/07/2020 14:08

I’m not so bothered about the flight but would be about lots of things with kids eg will we be able to use the pool when we want/will the beach be open/will we be able to get the food we want at the time we want it/what will happen if there is a local lockdown at our destination? The biggie is possibly what if one of us gets a cough/cold when there and we might not be able to get back!!

We have rescheduled to next year but have booked a self catering cottage in the Uk for a week next month.

HarrietM87 · 19/07/2020 14:09

Can’t you go somewhere in the UK? Would be logistically easier and you could control more stuff like travel. We’ve booked a UK break in August and really looking forward to the change of scene. It’s self catering and we’re planning to get shopping delivered and spend most of our time outside and at the beach (whatever the weather!) so think the risks are incredibly low. DS is 2 and I wouldn’t bother with a foreign trip for him at this age regardless of covid as the hassle isn’t worth it. Different if you’re seeing family I accept.

Frazzled2207 · 19/07/2020 14:10

Also if you are flying Easyjet there seems to be considerable doubt as to whether your flight will actually take off. And even if it does you won’t be sure that the return flight will. Sounds like far too much stress.

NillyFrickers · 19/07/2020 14:11

@KoalasandRabbit the country we would be visiting have started doing insurance packs, so at the airport you can purchase for I think it was €20-€50 and it will cover you for any covid related problems, also I have insurance through my bank, but not sure they cover so would buy it at the airport.
Everything that we would be needing/using/visitng has now re opened this week at the destination. They are taking temperature checks before entering any premisea or excursion and have some rules in place, which are all reasonable and not much different to here.

We have spent all of lockdown going for country walks and it was never really my thing anyway, so I would absolutley love a change of scenery. I used to work abroad so I always love being in the sun, the weather here is so depressing. Where I am seems to be the only place not having any sun right now. İnstead it's grey clouds. But obviously if I was advised against going ahead i wouldn't and I would be happy to stay here. İt's just the fact we have been given the go ahead for holidays! Up until then i was ok with not going abroad Confused

vanillandhoney · 19/07/2020 14:12

No, we won't be going anywhere.

Being self-employed, we've both lost too much income to both take another week or two out of work. Neither of us were eligible for any support so we need to focus on building up savings again. We'll both take a couple of weeks off over Christmas but until then I think we'll both be pretty busy.

coronafiona · 19/07/2020 14:13

No. The last place I want to be is a plane. Risks are up to you thoughWink

SeagoingSexpot · 19/07/2020 14:13

I'm going within Europe with DC in August. No concerns.
