We had a holiday booked for may (DM, DD and me), but it was cancelled of course... My DM now wants to rebook for next month as the prices are really good. The place we go is where my DD's family live so we don't get to see them unless we are there (not a huge issue as they don't make too much effort), but i'm really unsure if I should be taking DD who is 2. My DM is spamming me with holidays constantly, even though I've told her I'm unsure. One minute I'm fine and thinking everything will be fine, the next I'm worried about going in the current situation. But i do tend to worry about everything a bit too much. Maybe more restrictions will be relaxed by then, but they could also be stricter?
I'm just looking to see what other people are thinking really? Are holidays with a kid a no go until next year?

None of us have any health issues or weak immune systems. I've also seen people arriving at this destination on Facebook and posting videos and everything seems fine and enjoyable.. I just don't know what to do.

Yes. I'm going abroad in two weeks with the grandkids and OH for a fortnight.
We can't wait. 😎

We (family of five) have had a trip booked to Scilly (off Cornwall) since well before the pandemic. W are still going. We are self catering, we are driving in our car to Penzance and are happy to go on the short ferry journey wearing suitable PPE and spending most of it on deck (weather permitting).
I would not consider travelling abroad at this time, largely due to a reluctance to use crowded public transport and sit in close confines in a plane, and travel through a busy airport where thousands of people are passing through daily.

CushionsandCandles · 19/07/2020 14:23

I have just returned from a fortnight in Italy. We flew from Heathrow to Rome. Children are 10 and 8. All felt very safe indeed.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/07/2020 14:26

I would have if it hadn't been cancelled. I've had to move it to February because I have no more annual leave this year.

TimeWastingButFun · 19/07/2020 14:30

We've given up on the idea of a proper holiday this year, but we are going to a house in Cornwall for a week or two so we're looking forward to that. Not what we originally planned but I really don't want to get on a crowded plane.

nevermorelenore · 19/07/2020 14:44

I didn't fancy a plane this year. Flying with kids is stressful enough already, without the added issues. I didn't even think of the risks to be honest.

We have booked Eurotunnel and doing a Eurocamp type stay. You still get the beach and pool but the prices aren't as crazy as UK breaks at the moment.

ghostyslovesheets · 19/07/2020 14:58

we are off to France - via ferry - in just over a week - Eurocamp - 14 days - dd2 missed her GCSE's, her prom, saying goodbye to her friends and teachers - DD3 missed her SATS and most of her end of term fun

both have been through the mill with lockdown - they need a break and so do I

flooredbored · 19/07/2020 15:04

Our holidays have been cancelled. We are camping in the garden for a week and will do days out every day, like if we were on holiday.

implantsandaDyson · 19/07/2020 15:33

We've been away already - 5 of us, 3 kids. Flew with Ryanair. We were at a self catering holiday camp type thing. It was blissful to get away. We went to the beach, hired bikes, there was time and number limitations on the pools- it all worked like clockwork. Had a brilliant time, really glad we stuck with our original plan to go.

Busymum45 · 19/07/2020 15:41

Anyone flying must be mad or stupid!! I'd go UK

Aragog · 19/07/2020 15:48

Re insurance

We got an email on Friday from our annual insurance company to say CV is now included again.

Are you on you planning to go on holiday this year? With kids?
NillyFrickers · 19/07/2020 15:53

Thank you everyone for the replies. Totally understand both points at the moment.

Surely if it wasn't safe to go, they wouldn't allow us to go and insurance companies wouldn't cover us?

We are thinking of glamping or a cottage holiday in October half term.

JassyRadlett · 19/07/2020 15:57

I think the problem with taking kids abroad is not about them getting ill, it’s about how much hard work it will be keeping to whatever restrictions are in place at the time.
We have never had a strict lockdown here because we don’t have the officers to enforce it. Other countries can be completely different; if there is a sudden strict local lockdown whilst you are there, it will not be much of a holiday.

That’s a good point and a factor in our decision of where to go was definitely our destination being a country that doesn’t require kids to social distance and were child-focused in their first lockdown.

JassyRadlett · 19/07/2020 15:59

I know children are very low risk, but there's people who keep saying things like "I wouldn't forgive myself if something happened to my children" or "I'm not putting my children/ family at risk" and that changes my mind.

I can understand those kinds of comments would throw you. But ultimately they’re pretty itratinalb

JassyRadlett · 19/07/2020 16:00

Oh man! Sorry.

They’re pretty irrational if you’re going to a country with a similar or lower infection rate than ours.

bigchris · 19/07/2020 16:22

I'd go

No reason not to if none of your family are shielding

bigchris · 19/07/2020 16:23

Anyone flying must be mad or stupid!! I'd go UK

Hate these comments

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/07/2020 16:30

@Busymum45 or maybe people realise that the risk is small and aren't letting their lives be ruled by fear.

JassyRadlett · 19/07/2020 16:32

Anyone flying must be mad or stupid!!

Are you basing that on any firm evidence?

Verite1 · 19/07/2020 16:37

We are going to France. Ferry and driving. My only concern about going is what would happen in (Hopefully unlikely) event that one of us got covid. I would not be concerned about destination (depending on rates of infection there etc) but flying would concern me.

anothernamereally · 19/07/2020 16:57

I could possibly be both mad and stupid but having weighed up the risks (including lockdown whilst there) and costs I'll take that chance - 4 different walls will be heaven

Louise0701 · 19/07/2020 16:59

We’re going abroad for new year with our 3 children under 7

Roselilly36 · 19/07/2020 17:07

No, IMHO it’s selfish & irresponsible to travel internationally during a pandemic. My family will be staying at home.

frustrationcentral · 19/07/2020 17:21

We're going for a long weekend away, lodge on a very small holiday park ( 10 lodges!), no communal facilities. Can't wait!
