Have earwigs spent the entirety of lockdown shagging or what?

They’re everywhere!!! All over my garden furniture, DD’s sandpit has become a metropolis, I sat down on the sofa and one ran up the cushion next to my face.

I can’t cope with the creepy bastards. Also do they actually eat your eardrums or is that some mad made up thing from school? Eurgh,

Earwigs or woodlice, OP?

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 19/07/2020 08:41

Can't say I've seen any this year (ear wigs or woodlice)
Not sure about the whole eating your eardrum thing though, I'd like to say it's made up.

Mumoftwo12345 · 19/07/2020 08:54

I've seen loads of them tooConfused

Hardbackwriter · 19/07/2020 09:23

Well they haven't been able to go to the pub or cinema so what else are they to do?!

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2020 12:11

"do they actually eat your eardrums ?"

There's been no scientific study to prove they don't Grin (afaik)

AuntieMarys · 19/07/2020 12:13

2 in the toilet today. Bastards

ConcreteUnderpants · 19/07/2020 12:31

I’ve got an increase too, OP. Is the warmer weather bringing them out? Also got loads of ants appearing too.
Can deal with ants, but earwigs, no. bit scared that they’ll bite me.

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 19/07/2020 12:40

Ants everywhere here, flying ones too! DS loves to stand in a patch of them so they crawl all over his bare feet then say ooh spiders ... (He's a toddler not 25) I saw one earwig yesterday maybe he got lost on the way to your house?

PotholeParadise · 19/07/2020 12:48

Earwigs don't eat eardrums!

They do display maternal behaviour by looking after their eggs and the baby earwigs though.

My real hate in summer is mosquitos (Germany)

Normally I'm scratching for several weeks

but amazingly this year I haven't been bitten yet - maybe COVID has killed off the buggers Grin

BestZebbie · 19/07/2020 14:02

I dismantled our climbing frame this week. It is made of lots of plastic tubing. It turns out that I was destroying a complete space-age earwig city - about 20 ran out of every tube.....

Thelnebriati · 19/07/2020 14:26

There was a crash in some migrating bird populations early this year, with a large outbreak of bird flu and another of pneumonia, both in Europe. So some places have had fewer birds nesting than usual, and there may be more insects.
Then we've had a wet summer, which earwigs like.

I read this earlier and thought how bizarre. Then came into my bedroom to find a giant one on my carpet...yet all the windows are closed....Hmm
