To drink alcohol whilst awaiting termination

Fifilikes · 18/07/2020 16:58

Found out I was pregnant yesterday which came as a complete shock as I’ve got a coil fitted. DH and I categorically do not want any children so sadly we will be terminating the pregnancy (and changing to a more reliable form of birth control!). After finding out the news I immediately contacted my local clinic and am booked in on Monday to start the process. It’s very early so thankfully I haven’t yet noticed any symptoms of pregnancy except for the one missed period. DH and I are out celebrating a friend’s birthday this evening and we’d booked a hotel nearby so that we could both have a drink. I’ve never been in this situation before so I’m not really sure how I should be thinking or feeling. Would it be unreasonable of me to drink whilst pregnant, as I have no intention of proceeding with the pregnancy?

I'm so sorry you're having to go thriugh this.
As long as you're certain that you're going to terminate and thaymt you are in the right time frame for termination then yes i think you're fine too. But like others said does it make you emotional?
@sanityisamyth alcohol affects the foetus at different stages of the pregnancy in different ways. My son has fasd, perfectly functioning liver but lots of neurological problems. I know it's got nothing to do with this but just wanted to say that but of info is incorrect

Warsawa31 · 18/07/2020 19:09

As others have said your husband needs to a get a vasectomy. What’s the point of using non permanent birth control with chances of failure of northern or you want children.

Miniminiminimini · 18/07/2020 19:09

@IsAnybodyListening oh bore off the snip just like the coil isn’t 100pc effective either.

Warsawa31 · 18/07/2020 19:10

Sorry for typo “if neither of you want children”
He deffo should get The snip then no more worries

Warsawa31 · 18/07/2020 19:11

As someone who has had the snip myself - you get to tested and confirmed as sterile so Once you’ve had that confirmation yes it is 100 percent Effective

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 18/07/2020 19:16

Honestly... I am worried why you would ask ? Are you sure this is the right thing ? Really . Really the right option for you ?

Have a drink OP!!!

Idontbelieveit12 · 18/07/2020 19:23

When I found out I was pregnant at 18, very unplanned, I went out and got extremely drunk while waiting for a termination. I changed my mind about the termination and she’s a very intelligent 13 year old now.

Big hugs OP x

It doesn't matter for the pregnancy but in my experience I had a wine while waiting for a miscarriage to happen and it made me feel really ill. So in your case I would take it very easy with the alcohol, your body might react different to it now.

emerald you do know that the coil is one of the most reliable forms of contraception don’t you? There’s not much more OP could have done really. Even sterilisations and vasectomies aren’t 100%.

KittyFantastico · 18/07/2020 19:31

Have a drink, OP. The distraction will help and best of luck for your appointment, I hope it all goes well.

Ignore the people questioning your contraceptive choices, this was an accident and accidents happen which is why it's a good thing we have access to safe, legal abortions.

you get to tested and confirmed as sterile so Once you’ve had that confirmation yes it is 100 percent Effective

This is incirrect, even after having clear samples it has a failure rate of roughly 1 in 2000 so while it would be unusual (and unlucky) for pregnancy to occur it is not 100% effective. I think the latest methods lower the risk by removing a small section of the vas deferens and catering the ends but it is still a risk as the 1 in 2000 was quoted to DH as part of the pre-op process when DH had his done.

MaxNormal · 18/07/2020 19:33

We aren't having children but DH never got the snip. Given that about 10% of men wind up with long-term pain and complications we decided it wasn't worth it when condoms were working just fine.
I don't understand why some people are getting shirty with the OP. Accidents happen. It wasn't like she was shagging sans protection.

OliviaBenson · 18/07/2020 19:33

The coil is a long term and usually reliable contraceptive choice so I don't understand others points.

Me and my DH are childfree by choice. We also wouldn't be given a vasectomy (him) or sterilisation (me) because of our ages and the fact that we might change our minds Hmm

It's not as easy as others make out.

Hope it goes ok on Monday op. Enjoy your drink tonight.

MaxNormal · 18/07/2020 19:34

IsAnybodyListening I get the strong impression that you disapprove of terminations which is colouring what you are saying here.
If I'd had the misfortune to get pregnant then yes I would have viewed it as an inconvenience to be dealt with.

if a couple don't want to have DC they take a secure proper route to prevent it instead of abortion to cure it.

Precautions like having a contraception device fitted, such as the coil?

Termination isn't a contraception

It's not being used as contraception seeing as the point of contraception is to prevent pregnancy. OK is here because her contraception failed to do it's job. Luckily there is a back-up for when that happens.

This thread should have a trigger warning. Completely insensitive.

The title makes it clear what the thread is about. I get that you're obviously upset but why click on it if you knew what it was about and knew it would trigger you?

KittyFantastico · 18/07/2020 19:37

I’m not sure how it might make the foetus feel

A foetus doesn't feel anything at this stage.

Emeraldshamrock · 18/07/2020 19:39

Oh shut up, @Emeraldshamrock**
Oh great reply. Hmm
Once it is over OP speak to DH about getting the snip to save you the unpleasantness of an abortion again in the future. It is the only method with 100% reliability.

SuperStay7 · 18/07/2020 19:39

There is no reason for you not have a few drinks if you fancy it, OP. Ignore the busybodies giving you contraception advice and enjoy your evening Flowers.
