To pop to the shop today without a mask?

Popsie17 · 17/07/2020 06:39

I know they don’t become mandatory until next week so I don’t have to but I believe most people in my area have started wearing them already. Will I be frowned upon for not doing so?

Basically, I’ve only ever bought one pack of masks and not wore them. I live in the countryside, don’t use public transport, don’t go to busy places and generally get my shopping delivered.

I give the only masks I had to my granny because she was struggling to find some (doesn’t do online shopping etc). So I re-ordered some for myself but they aren’t here yet.

Need to pick something up from the shop today.

Aibu?

It’s fine. Use a scarf if you really feel you need to?

GaraMedouar · 17/07/2020 06:42

No YANBU - it comes into force next week. I need to do a biggish shop tomorrow morning - it will be without a mask - hardly anyone there early doors anyway. And I will wear a mask from next Friday. I have ordered some washable ones from Amazon.

Destroyedpeople · 17/07/2020 06:43

It says 'face covering' not 'mask'.

Put on a scarf and cover your face with that.

End of 'problem '...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/07/2020 06:44

I went to Asda yesterday without one, there were still people not wearing them.

covetingthepreciousthings · 17/07/2020 06:55

I went shopping the day after the news was announced and i didn't wear a mask - only nipped in a couple of shops and whilst I know it's not enforced I felt really guilty - but I don't think I was frowned upon at all. So now I will wear one even before it's enforced.

I do work in retail - and we have still had a fair few customers not in masks this week and I haven't thought any differently of them.

FourEyesGood · 17/07/2020 06:55

I went to the supermarket yesterday and was amazed by the number of people not wearing masks yet.
If you don’t have one, use a scarf.

@GaraMedouar “hardly anyone there”? What about the staff? They’re people too, and a lot of them are pretty scared of having customer-facing roles.

GaraMedouar · 17/07/2020 07:20

@FourEyesGood - well probably one or two customers and a couple of checkout staff. I live in a village/small town in an area where we have extremely low cases, not heard of one. The checkout staff are behind a big plastic screen. I’m at least a metre from them at all times. Been shopping like this every week for months . As I said I’ve ordered masks , to arrive next week, so I will start wearing them. In my town /shop I’d estimate 10- 20% wear masks , the rest don’t.

TheLegendOfZelda · 17/07/2020 07:22

I went yesterday. About 10% absolute max. Mostly wearing them on their chin or mouth only so I don't know why they bothered, one disposable one that looked filthy. Yuck.

Strugglingtodomybest · 17/07/2020 07:27

I went yesterday without wearing one, I was going to wrap a scarf round, but I forgot to take it. It was fine. None of the supermarket staff were wearing them and maybe 20-30% of the customers were.

BrutusMcDogface · 17/07/2020 07:29

It’s not mandatory until next week, so you’re fine. I went yesterday without one. I have got some but I can’t wear them without them steaming up my glasses, so I need to find a solution before next Friday!

Popsie17 · 17/07/2020 07:31

Thanks all. I did think about wearing a scarf but it’s muggy and feel like I’ll be sweating in a scarf (I know it’s not all about me sweating 🤣). Desperately hoping the masks I’ve ordered will turn up soon!

It’s going to take some getting used to! We live in an area with a low number of cases, Also in the country with masses of outdoor space so no need to wear them in my local area, don’t use public transport (there isn’t any 🤣). It’s just the shopping (of course I know I have to and will be wearing one - I’m not complaining but this is new to me!).

If you have a Halloween mask you can use that, or a motorcycle helmet.

TwilightPeace · 17/07/2020 07:33

Just wear one. Why would you not?
It’s called ‘caring for other members of society’.

Too many people not doing the right thing just because it’s not mandatory yet. Very selfish.

Vivana · 17/07/2020 07:33

OP you will fine.

Also retail staff are exempt from the new face covering rule while they are working.

QueenofmyPrinces · 17/07/2020 07:33

I went to ASDA yesterday and hardly saw anyone wearing a mask. None of the staff were.

I also had to pop to my GP surgery to collect something and the front doors were practically barricaded and a sign across them have a list of reasons as to why you’re allowed to enter the surgery and that you must be wearing a mask.

I didn’t have a mask so I opened the door and shouted in to the reception my reason for coming and apologised that I didn’t have a mask. She told me it wasn’t a problem at all and just called me in. I did find that a bit strange but maybe it shows how the concept of wearing masks is considered to be “just for show” as opposed to people actually thinking they’re necessary.

I read w very interesting article yesterday that discussed the feelings of shop owners regarding enforcing masks in their shops. Of the 5 that were interviewed, 4 of them said they would not turn away people who weren’t wearing masks or a face coverings. They basically said that because they’ve been hit so hard financially due to the Covid then they certainly won’t be turning away any paying customers.

QueenofmyPrinces · 17/07/2020 07:34

Also retail staff are exempt from the new face covering rule while they are working.

Why though?

lyralalala · 17/07/2020 07:34

You only have to wear it in the shop so can you not just stick a scarf in your bag?
OhMyDarling · 17/07/2020 07:35

I honestly don’t get this attitude.
They have made it law because people aren’t being responsible, because the risks are there and people are being blase, selfish and ignorant.

Put on a bloody mask!!!!!!! It’s not about you!

How will waiting till the strike of midnight before wearing one going to help? The germs aren’t clock watching like you lot.

I have family members in hospital. If they (or the doctors/nurses/healthcare assistants/cleaners etc etc are expose to Covid in bloody Asda) they are unlikely to live. Just put on a mask!

TeddyIsaHe · 17/07/2020 07:35

I’ve been wearing one the whole time. As have lots of people in my city. We have had 9 new cases (pillar 1&2) of Covid in 2 weeks and 1 death in a month.

I’m not saying it’s down to mask wearing, but if it helps keeps our area this low then I’m all for it. Op pop a scarf over your mouth/nose. Most places sell disposable masks now.

Wecandothis99 · 17/07/2020 07:38

Nope everyone knows it's from next week. I've started to now but actually to get my Son used to it because he freaks out when he sees me in it so need to start a little so he's not so shocked

Vivana · 17/07/2020 07:39

The government said its not practical in some of the departments. I also work in a supermarket but will wear one as everyone else will be

ButterMeCrumpets · 17/07/2020 07:43

Most people around here choose not to wear a mask. You see a few but not many.

That's why the government have had to make them mandatory from next week and lots of us will choose not to shop in person from then

QueenofmyPrinces · 17/07/2020 07:44

My grandad said he wouldn’t be surprised if there was an increase in armed robberies now seeing as covering your face Is now expected and will no longer be something to cause alarm. He said it’s like giving thieves the green light.

Popsie17 · 17/07/2020 07:48

I can’t wear one I don’t have one @TwilightPeace. I did have some but I give them to my granny as mentioned in original post! She doesn’t do online shopping and hasn’t seen any in the shops!! I’ve re-ordered but not here yet. I am not refusing to wear one. Just don’t have one because I give them to a more vulnerable family member who can’t easily get some!! I can’t magic a face covering up. I am not really a scarf wearer either rain I’m not even sure I have a suitable scarf (I’ll have a look though).

Up until recently hardly anyone wore them here. Hardly any cases here!

MoistMolly · 17/07/2020 07:49

Just sellotape some toilet paper across your nose and mouth (and hope it doesn't rain).
