Anyone else experienced stomach pain in the third trimester?

I'm 35 weeks and I keep getting episodes where my whole stomach hurts for an hour or so. It's not on and off like contractions, it's my whole stomach and it tenses and feels heavy but mostly really hurts.

In the day it's usually triggered by walking or lifting my heavy toddler for too long, but I also keep experiencing it at night and it hurts too much to sleep.

It's been going on for a couple of weeks. I lost my plug last week so went into triage and spoke to them about it (as DS was born at 34 weeks) and they basically said not to worry if it's not stopping and starting like contractions.

DS was back to back so all of my contractions were in my back, but I was having bad back pain which I later realised were contractions on and off for a week before he was born. However I don't know if I'm just worrying because DS was early. Is this normal for the third trimester?

Why don't you ring your maternity unit and speak to a midwife?

lockdownparty · 17/07/2020 21:23

Braxton hicks? Do they subside when you rest?

Merryoldgoat · 17/07/2020 21:24

Could it be Braxton-Hicks?

Merryoldgoat · 17/07/2020 21:24

Sorry - posted too early.

I had them when I pushed myself too hard.

Sarahlou252 · 17/07/2020 21:27

If it comes and goes I would also say Braxton Hicks, they can be incredibly uncomfortable and had me almost doubled over when I tried to walk sometimes. My bump used to feel like a rock when it happened, but they are harmless and totally normal. Maybe it wouldnt hurt to check though xx

ChaoticCatling · 17/07/2020 21:28

I couldn't eat much at a time in the third trimester as there just wasn't the room. I couldn't take deep breaths either. Maybe your stomach just has less room, try eating little and often if you are getting stomach ache?

AuntVictoria · 17/07/2020 21:30

Thank you all so much, they do indeed come on when I walk too far or lift too much and generally subside when I rest so it sounds like Braxton Hicks. My bump does also get uncomfortable when I eat too much! Thanks again, it's really reassuring that other people have found the same.

While I am sure we all mean well when we share our advice, please do speak to your GP or midwife about this. We're not medically qualified and we don't know what follow up questions to ask you that might identify a problem.

Mumsnet is no substitute for medical advice, and this is all the more important to remember when dealing with pregnancy or child symptoms.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 17/07/2020 21:38

@HappyAsASandboy my thoughts exactly.

lockdownparty · 17/07/2020 21:42

Op says that she saw a midwife about it last week.

Still1nLove · 17/07/2020 21:46

Definitely speak to your midwife/healthcare team. It does sound like braxton hicks, I had them terribly, but only in the later few weeks and then I had the easiest delivery ever (super quick, 2 hours, unexpectedly born at home). I found that kneeling on all fours, resting my bump between my legs and a pillow under boobs and armpits really helped. I also took raspberry leaf tablets from 27weeks so maybe that helped with the speedy delivery

Still1nLove · 17/07/2020 21:47

#37 weeks. Do not take raspberry leaf any earlier than 37 weeks and ask midwife first

AuntVictoria · 17/07/2020 21:57

I spoke to midwives about it last week, but honestly I was made to feel like I was just worrying because of DS's early arrival (which is true, to be fair). I feel like I can't ask them about it again because they think I'm being silly. However, I was also made to feel like that with DS when I went in with terrible back pain at 34 weeks (they only let me come in because I'd bled a little and am rhesus negative), and it turned out I was 6cm dilated! At which point they did start taking me seriously at least Grin
