Did I hear that right that the west indies cricket team came to the UK on the 3rd june in the middle of a global epidemic and that's ok. I am in scotland and we cant even get in to see my 100year old granny yet in a care home which is fine . What the hell

GinDaddyRedux · 16/07/2020 19:15

It's in a bio-secure environment with strict restrictions on player's movements. People planned this and made it possible and it was granted permission. Perhaps your granny isn't in a similar environment.

It winds people up though my partner has lost his job I know people who have died, its not bloody essential that cricket is played . Make my blood boil

I'm sorry you know people who have died. I am very sad to hear someone you care about has lost their job.

How though are your personal sufferings enough to warrant stopping organisations (and these are sporting ones) trying to get back on their feet?

Lots of people work for the ECB, lots of groundsmen have been able to get working again - those are also jobs, no?

I genuinely feel for you but I don't think the areas of your life you want to improve, will get any better if we put a stop to cricket.

miss43 · 16/07/2020 19:28

We were told only to travel essentially. The commentator dared to say what a sacrifice the players were taking . Get a grip Maby we think differently up here but I live near a major airport and in a flight path and know a few journalists if this had happened up here and hit the papers there would of been an outcry .

Where is "up here" so to speak?
TeaAndHobnob · 16/07/2020 19:35

Well I'm glad that cricket is happening for one. I had tickets for three test matches this summer and they all got cancelled. A bit of TMS on the radio makes summer imo. If I can't see it live then this will do.

It's as safe as they could possibly make it, a lot of people are having some income assured because of it. And actually the only player who has broken the rules is one of ours 😂

But it's not a secret. The tour has been known about for ages as has all the careful planning. And people have been flying in and out of the UK all the time (without the bio-secure precautions). One of the England bowlers has been removed from the team today because he went off piste and went to visit his family - they are being very strict.

@GinDaddyRedux is right that many many people are employed by sports organisations. The test match is an opportunity for them to get back to work, same with horse racing and all the other non-essentials. Personally I'd rather have cricket than Primark but that's me.

I am sorry for your bereavement and job losses. It's been a horrible time and still is.

Totally agree @TeaAndHobnob I'm really enjoying it.
miss43 · 16/07/2020 19:44

Scotland, I think it is different up here no sport at moment , infuriates most people I know especailly keyworkers the way sport is worshipped by some makes a them and us situation .

OP posts:
FloresTorres · 16/07/2020 19:52

We are enjoying the cricket these last few days.
Our family also experienced a really bad year with Covid.

A bit of footie and cricket is a welcome distraction from what has been a hellish time.

notimagain · 16/07/2020 19:54

I'm sorry to hear of your problems OP but as others have said people have been entering and leaving the UK throughout the crisis, at multiple airports, albeit in much smaller numbers than normal..the West Indies team didn't have to parachute in, 007 style, to avoid detection, so I don't understand the outcry or flightpaths comment.

I'm also sorry to hear about your partner losing their job but there will be plenty more losing their jobs in the travel and sporting industries if teams can't travel and competitions don't start up again...

Anyhow must go, don't tell anybody but there's Premiership football being played tonight and I need to catch kick off ..

bonjonbovi · 16/07/2020 19:55

Oh piss off with your faux outrage and ‘them and us’ attitude.

It’s been meticulously planned, and done very very well. The games are played at grounds with attached hotels, and are biosecure.

thedancingbear · 16/07/2020 19:57

What do people think of the series so far? It's good to see England seem to be developing a more solid top order, even if the runs aren't exactly flowing. Really healthy for the game to see a competitive Windies test side too.

LakieLady · 16/07/2020 19:59

Watching the highlights right now!

I'm glad they're playing, they're taking all sorts of cautionary measures and as a PP has mentioned, the one breach of biosecurity was by an England player who went home.

It's nice to see something going on that bears at least a little resemblance to a normal summer.

Bunnybigears · 16/07/2020 20:01

It hasn't been a secret, there has already been one test match played, how is you think the West Indies team got here?!

miss43 · 16/07/2020 20:01

Its not faux why should we stay in , follow the rules not see family etc but sport people can travel , mix etc his was the 3rd of june .In scotland we were at the 1st stage there were very few flight coming into glasgow , the commentator used the word sacrifice to describe the players how can that not boil your piss

OP posts:
FloresTorres · 16/07/2020 20:06

It's been really enjoyable, West Indies have been doing well, Holder especially.
The commentary has been a refreshing change to the usual bods also.

Sirzy · 16/07/2020 20:09

They are mixing in a bubble.

The measures have been put in place to keep everyone doing it safe and ensure that jobs are saved.

They aren’t just randomly flying in and going off sightseeing.

Allergictoironing · 16/07/2020 20:09

They will have flown in by private plane, not a standard commercial flight. They would have been taken by coach to their base in England. This was then locked down with nobody allowed in or out, until they traveled privately (not public transport) to the venue where the first match was played. This venue was locked down for some days before the match, including any commentators who were on site. The venues were selected mainly on the basis of their ability to be bio secured, e.g. with hotels on site so no commuting to & from daily. Everyone had their temperature taken every day, and had Covid testing more than once. There are just the 2 squads involved and their support staff, plus match officials (same for all matches in this series)

So - why is this any worse than the football going on, with different teams meeting every week in many different venues? Or the F1, flying all round Europe (though only to countries with a low infection rate)? Or the golf I saw being advertised coming up soon?

Yes there is a "Them and Us" thing going on here - England (and many other European countries) have allowed sport to start under very controlled environments. SCOTLAND so far has not. It's not a specific sport discrimination, it's the measures being taken by your country being different to others.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/07/2020 20:10

Well - I live under the flight path for one of Scotland’s biggest airports, and I am entirely fine with this.

thedancingbear · 16/07/2020 20:10

the commentator used the word sacrifice to describe the players how can that not boil your piss

Nope, my piss is the same as usual. Roughly body temperature.

Please explain why my piss should boil. You seem to see the restrictions as some kind of penance or punishment.

FloresTorres · 16/07/2020 20:11

Scottish Premiership is back on on August 1st OP.

sst1234 · 16/07/2020 20:15

Do you expect the world stay shut down forever? The untold economic damage will kill more people in coming months than the pandemic itself.

AgeLikeWine · 16/07/2020 20:19

Professional sport, and the media which covers it, is a major industry in this country and, if ways can be found for it to continue safely, it should do so.

The West Indies team have lived together in a ‘biosecure bubble’ since they landed in the U.K. they have been quarantined and completely isolated at two cricket grounds which have on-site hotels ; one in Southampton and the other in Manchester.

Every aspect of their movement between those grounds has been meticulously planned, and none of the players or staff have left the bubble at any time. Use of the word ‘sacrifice’ to describe their isolation for weeks on end in comfortable hotels isn’t ideal, but they have certainly had to put up with huge inconvenience for an extended period.

SusieOwl4 · 16/07/2020 20:19

They have had to quarantine for two weeks I believe and no see family or anyone else for that matter . It’s incredibly strict . Just watched about it on tv .
