AIBU to realise that if I "came into money" I would quite my job immediately and never work again?

Just that really. Has anyone else come to the realisation through lockdown that they would happily quit working for other people and never do paid work again?

I've only just realised this the last month or so. Before that I was always one of those obnoxious people who thought they'd keep working even if they won the big lottery "for something to do". Now 🤔...I've just had enough of it. A life time's worth. I'd quit for a paid off house and a tiny living at this point. To hell with holidays and consumer society.

Of course I won't...yet...but does anyone else just feel totally done?

YABU: Yay work! 🎉
YANBU: Totally done 🤨

I didnt need lockdown to realise this. I enjoy my job, it's an independent company and I feel a great loyalty but I work because I need to earn.

If I won the lottery I'd split my time between travel and volunteering.

TicTac80 · 16/07/2020 21:36

If I won the Euromillions, I'd cut my hours down to part time and only work shifts during term time (I'm a senior nurse, and a single mum of 2). I love my job, I've worked at the same NHS Trust since I was 18 (nearly 22 years! So a lot of my colleagues are wonderful friends)....but....I'm tired. Very tired. And I think that I would enjoy my job more without having to worry about childcare costs, juggling shifts around childcare during the school hols etc. I'd buy the house I'm living in (I love where we live) and have an extension put on it (or buy a slightly larger house in the village we live in), and I'd hire a nanny to cover childcare for my term time shifts. Oh, and I'd do loads of courses and studying :D

I like my job and my team, but 3 months of furlough has shown me that I don’t miss it or them that much!

Silenceisnotgolden · 16/07/2020 21:40

I’d be gone like a shot. I manage to fill 13 weeks of the year (teacher) with a whole load of bare minimum and I’m VERY certain I could do the same for an additional 49 weeks if the opportunity arose.

cyclingmad · 16/07/2020 21:41

Quit the next morning, screw any notice period or if I have do ill just do naff all not like they can fire me Grin

Buy house overlooking ocean noone nearby maybe Pacific coast with infinity pool. Get a chef to cook me healthy meals maybe ill even learn from them. Learn to play the piano, travel lots and see the world, do more snorkelling, get skinny and definitely chill the hell out for a good few years before even thinking of doing something like volunteering

ChikiTIKI · 16/07/2020 21:42

I like my current job but would prefer to do it part time if allowed.

I've had jobs before where the managers were so so horrible that if I had won the lottery I certainly would have ghosted them. And a couple where I would have been tempted to do that but would have worked my notice due to a few lovely team mates.

MintyCedric · 16/07/2020 21:49

I would be out the door in a heartbeat

Dk20 · 16/07/2020 21:51

I'd be gone.
I would stay if I could just do my 7 hours a day but all the overtime I have to do is just killing me.
I only had to do 2 hours overtime today and it was just absolute bliss having the evening off with the kids and having some time to myself.

Illdealwithitinaminute · 16/07/2020 21:53

It's funny you should only just have had that realisation, I've had the same type of experience in lockdown. I do love aspects of my job, and before I've always said I would keep working if I won the lottery, but lately I've been thinking it might be nicer to have the option to quit. I like the job but the hysteria over how we are going to work with the corona risk is just awful, I work at a university and it appears to be twice as much work for half as much appreciation coming up, I honestly probably would run for the door if I had the money!

WellThankyouAJPTaylor · 16/07/2020 21:57

Well, I voted YANBU as I am 100% on board with the so many things to do camp.

But in reality, I do enjoy my job 80% of the time, and I'd be sad not to do it at all, so I guess I'd drop to one day a week or go freelance or something and do piecework.

safariboot · 16/07/2020 22:01

I don't know if I'd quit or not. I certainly wouldn't immediately walk out though - I'd give my notice and do what's reasonable to help the company.

Of course it depends on how much money. A million? Sounds like a lot, but after buying a house the leftover's not really "set for life" money. Ten million? Now we're talking. Enough that I can more or less do what I like, I could live the life of the "1%" and still have money left over when I die. A hundred million? That starts to get into the territory of wanting to something to better society with it. I think I'd look into setting up a fund to provide grants for scientific research.

I'd seriously consider setting up my own business anyway.

AgeLikeWine · 16/07/2020 22:08

Of course YANBU. I didn’t need lockdown to realise I would give up work as soon as I could afford to.

Isn’t that why we buy lottery tickets?

Illdealwithitinaminute · 16/07/2020 22:09

A million? Sounds like a lot, but after buying a house the leftover's not really "set for life" money

I could definitely leave my job with a million- but I don't have a huge fancy house. I'd be fine with the house I've got and extra money invested/in property.

ChewtonRoad · 16/07/2020 22:18

I have come into a little money recently which I think may be enough to call off working forever, hopefully in three months.

I won't have millions or a million but it doesn't matter. I don't know anyone who has said in the last days of life "oh I wish I'd worked more" and I won't be the first to say such a thing.

Rhubardandcustard · 16/07/2020 22:19

I’d feel bad for the team I’m in but wouldn’t make me stay. Way I look is someone else can have the job and maybe they’ll love it there.
It’s not bad as jobs go but being at home during lockdown made me reassess and realise it’s not all about work and money and I’d be happier not going to work every day.
I’d miss the people but not enough to make me stay.

melmos · 16/07/2020 22:19

I'd struggle with the idea of this because giving up because I could be at the start of something I would be good at after years of being in the wrong profession (or the beginning or a dead end ). However if I got enough money to quit then out the door! I hope I'd be happy with the choice in hindsight - with some money I'd like to think id open my family friendly pig and dog pub or become an interior design. On id turn into an enormous alcoholic (probably more likely!) Weird one but excellent thread - also I've heard and this was a few years back so adjust for inflation but if you earn over 50k (I assume per person) your happiness doesn't go up however below that is does. I am currently on less than half so looking forward to my happiness going up. Also not wanting to snap pencils when people on higher salaries give me fiscal advice. Ahem I digress!

OwlinaTree · 16/07/2020 22:27

I'd give up my stressful current job, but I'd probably do some type of work, but a job with a lot less stress, and something you leave behind when the day is over.

Lovingyou · 16/07/2020 22:29

This happened to me. I had a really messy divorce a few years ago. My ex was loaded but awful - I was awarded quite a lot of money as a result.
I now have enough money to never work again and live quite comfortably. However, after 8 months of not working, people started asking a lot of questions - some which were insanely personal and rude, like "How much money do you have?" It felt like I had to.justify myself wherever I went.

It wasn't until I told a "friend" the truth and then the requests to borrow money started. It started off as small amounts which I did because I believed she would pay me back (she never did) and then became more over time (one time £20k).

Apparently, I'm selfish and posh for not giving it to her. In the end, I got a job and told the few people that knew that I gave it away to charity. Working is good for so many reasons and I'm really glad that I got another job easily.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/07/2020 22:32

I wouldn't. I love my job, though I'll freely admit that I'm unusual in that... It's badly paid and largely undervalued but I wouldn't change it for the world

Teddy275 · 16/07/2020 22:34

In a heartbeat. And if it was enough, like Lotto big, I have a list of about 20 co workers that I'd take with me.
One too many passive aggressive emails about things like folders being left on a table today... it would not take a lot of money for me to tell them where to go! 😂

plominoagain · 16/07/2020 22:34

God , they wouldn’t see me for dust . Although if I won the absolute motherload on the Euromillions , my team know that I’d go , and take them with me , because I’d give them all enough money that they could go and retrain or start something else for two years without having to worry about money .

I’d probably go and volunteer for an equine charity , and extend my stables so I could adopt some more ... I’d never have enough time !

Minniem2020 · 16/07/2020 22:45

Too right, I'd quit in a heartbeat. I work in travel so I'd be booking myself on the next available private jet then they wouldn't see me for dust

powershowerforanhour · 16/07/2020 22:45

They'd never get the scorch marks out of work carpark tarmac.

Ragwort · 16/07/2020 22:52

I'm not sure ... I found being furloughed very tedious, maybe because we couldn't do much or travel but I am in the fortunate position of genuinely loving my job, which is only part time and for a charity that I am very focussed on so I really love my involvement there. I already do a fair bit of volunteering (different to the charity I work for) so I have the best of both worlds; I have a lot of autonomy in my job, rarely have much contact with the bosses, can choose my own hours and days ..... so I am very content with my current lifestyle. Smile

transformandriseup · 16/07/2020 22:56

A few years back I would have said UABU but not now. I have been unemployed for two months and I haven't missed working at all.
